I wonder if they might have been some kind of temperance organization - the descendents of Jonadab in the Old Testament were supposed to have faithfully refrained from strong drink as well as permanent habitations (they "dwelt in tents"). My inclination (grantedly with little to go on) is that they are not part of the Masons.
