Barbara, According to 'The History of Providence Hospital 186-1961' found in "The Records of the Columbia Historical Society" Washington, DC 1960-1962, the original hospital opened in June 1861 in a large house known as the Nicholson Mansion at the corner of 2nd and D Streets, se. The facilities continued to expand at the same location until "...the last piece of property was bought on August 13, 1897 and Providence then owned the entire square 764 in southeast Washington...." I don't know if that particular "square" could have stretched to I street but maybe this helps some.
