    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Walt Whitman and "The Sacrificial Years"

    3. Hi Everybody, I may be the last person with D.C. ancestry to have discovered this little book about Whitman's amazing, devoted volunteer efforts in D.C. hospitals during four years of the Civil War, but I'm glad I found it, even at this late date. Some of the reading is tough, such as descriptions of the deplorable conditions of the wounded and dying soldiers. However, it also gives some interesting glimpses of what was happening in D.C. between 1862 and 1865. There are quite a few photographs --- various D.C. hospitals, the Capitol before and after the Dome was completed, soldiers, leaders, etc. Occasionally, there is a reference to some specific street address or location, and I find that these are at times very near where my HOLLIDGE and RAWLINGS ancestors were living. Went back to the bookstore (Half-Price Books) today and noted that there were four more copies of the book on the shelf. They're selling for $6.98 plus tax. Original price was $29.95. They're new, in perfect condition. If anyone has an interest in the book, I'd be willing to purchase a copy for him/her and ship it book rate, which would put the total cost at about $9.50. For anyone wishing to search for the book independently, the editor was John Harmon McElroy, and it was published in 1999 by David R. Godine, Publisher, Inc., Box 450, Jaffrey, NH 03452. 3. Sherry and List, Sherry, thanks for your personal reply. I was able to find the book on line and thought all might be interested (should there not be enough books in Houston to go around): http://www.daedalus-books.com/default.cfm?&CFID=703990&CFTOKEN=89434921 The price is $6.98 - hardcopy (Standard price $29.95) - it is the same book. I have ordered books from Daedalus before. They are prompt and very courteous. Would order from them again. I called their 800 number, although you can order on line, also. This is their homepage. http://www.daedalus-books.com/default.cfm?&CFID=703990&CFTOKEN=89434921 If my "hot spot" doesn't work as planned, I searched for Walt Whitman and it was one of the search results.
