Hello to All! Well, of course in the past I have heard many stories about the DC Marriage License Bureau. Here is my tale of woe. I accessed the web site, took down the information (including the fact that it would be a two week wait--expecting from experience 4-6 weeks). What the web site failed to state was that genealogy searches are NOT PRIORITY, the $10.00 fee covers only a one year search, that the information I provided from the Marriage Bureau Index was not useful and they had to search manually anyway. I mailed my request on 4/24/01; it was received 4/27/01 (by their admission). Early in June, two months later, I called to be assurred that someone was coming back from vacation and it would be seen to OR I could come there and do it myself (had I been able to I would have done that initially!!) and that it would be another 6-8 weeks. I called again Friday, 8/17/01 and was told they would get right on it. Today I received a call in which I learned about the $10/per year caveat. So in essence my money is lost (and by the way I requested to have it returned when I was told "another 6-8 weeks" and was informed that was not possible!!!). So after four months I have no licenses and am $30.00 poorer. So much for my experience. Now I ask what can be done? I told the clerk that I thought they should amend their web site to include the full explanation; she said they were working it but were too short-staffed. Fortunately, this is one of the very few instances in which I have had an unacceptable experience with a government office when requesting material. Why must requests to the District of Columbia always be such a huge problem?
