    2. The match pocket was a small metal box used to keep matches contained in case of accidental ignition. No "safety matches" at that time; they could even ignite from friction between match-heads. It's also called a Match Safe. Everyone needed matches to light gas mantles and kerosene lamps, responsibilities not considered beyond the capabilities of a child. My grandmother, age 6 in a rural midwestern community, was responsible for cleaning the household kerosene lamps, trimming the wicks and relighting them at night. There were usually two or three boys responsible for the lamps and fires in a schoolroom and perhaps the gift was in recognition of this young man's service. Jan Hall
