Does anyone know if the existing large Governemnt Printing Office building is the original building? My great grandfather, Thomas Joseph Mattingly, was a printer with the GPO and I'm curious to know if that building in which he worked in the 1880's and on still exists. Thanks so very much! Elizabeth, I spent 29 years at the GPO. There are several building which are collectively known as "the GPO". The first was a building purchased from Cornelius Wendell on December 1, 1860. Following the invasion of the South by the U.S. Government, an addition was added. After that several additional building were erected and there have been so many inside changes I am certain I would be lost after only being retired 5 years. Hope this helps.
