I wonder if the stuff in the filing cabinets were saved. What a mess! I heard it was the fault of a contractor who was using a blow torch to strip paint, then waited a good 15-20 minutes before calling the fire department. Shortly after the fire, I went to NBC.com and got channel 4 in Washington. They reported that people got into Peabody room as quickly as posssible and got out quite a bit of stuff and began drying them. The fourth picture shows a room full of boxes all sealed and marked. I would guess from that that much of what was in files is now packed up for removal to a place where work can proceed. Many years ago I worked for the DC Public Library in the Preparations Division where books were repaired and prepared to be returned to the libraries throughout the city. Hopefully, they are the ones who will care for the contents of Peabody Room in Georgetown. My God provides my every need according to His riches in glory. It is quite a sad sight. I hope they were able to save documents. I have a question about the second "after" picture. In the picture is what looks like a sign post that says "Woodland Beach". I live in "Woodland Beach" (Edgewater) Maryland. Does anyone know if there is any connection? Yes, The stuff in the metal filing cabinets came out the best from what I heard. It was a heat gun that caused the fire. They are like a hair dryer more than a blow torch. They are used to strip paint. At first I thought it happened on the roof, and my husband said it didn't make sense-he's a construction superintendent. But when I read this morning that they were stripping paint on a window he said that did make sense. The construction crew never called the fire department, a lady looked out a window, saw flames on the roof and called. When I told that to my husband that the crew had been fighting it about 10 0r 15 minutes he gave me a look. I believe that was because a crew would try to put it out themselves without calling first. I can see that happening-very unfortunate for the library though. From what I read when the Fire Department arrived the roof was engulfed with flames. One thing that didn't help was that the two closest fire hydrants were not working. Apparently the water pressure was too low on them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Boswell" <whboswell@verizon.net> To: <washingtondc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 06, 2007 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [WashDC] Fw: Peabody Room photographs: before/after >I wonder if the stuff in the filing cabinets were saved.
