Just curious, where is Corcoran St. in relation to 14th & U NW. I looked on my DC map but couldn't find it. Will look again tho. I went to school on V St. NW between 14th & 15th just one block up from U. Back in the 1940s the neighborhood was great. As a young teenager could go anywhere at night, however, when I got to be 16 & 17 it was turning into a bad neighborhood around Central High School (Cardoza now) and Meridian Hill Park. I was down that way last summer and it seemed the neighborhood during the day was okey. We had lunch at a hot dog place on U St. They are renovating all the old apartment buildings on Belmont St, Clifton St. and Chapin St. and probably many more. In the 40s mostly single parent families lived in the area and worked for the government. The mothers of all my friends were single parents and worked for government. By the way, does anyone remember old Turners Arena on W St. NW and the barn dances (dancing the Paul Jones) that they held on Saturday nights. It was a nice way to meet people. When I was at the DC Archives several years ago, they had a microfilm list alphabetical of all deaths in DC up until 1930. Check with them. Have you listers checked the Maryland online death index. Sometimes the list DC residents who died and were listed in the Maryland crossover area. www.mdvitalrec.net
I have a huge brick wall, that evolves the Alexandria, VA area. The only family I can find with the Douglas name that come close to solving my Brick Wall is a William G. Douglas that I find with a Paul in the 1900 census in Washington D.C. Area. I need to eliminate this family in order to move on in the research. I could do this if I could find siblings that give information about Paul and his whereabouts. There are two siblings I have traced through the 1930 census: Wirt (Wert/West) shown Wirt Raymond in his WWI registration born 22 Jan 1889 (Washington D.C.) who is shown married to a Charlotte in the 1910, 1920, & 1930 census. She was born abt 1890. In the 1920 and 30 census they have a son name George W Douglas born about 1914. In the 1900 he has a sister listed as Mable, which is shown as Maude and Maud in the 1920 (Wirt & family are living with them) married to a Thomes F Burak 1920 and Thomas F. Burch 1930 census, born 1863 & 1869 respectively. Maud was born between 1873 and 1875 depending on the census. I cannot find a death on any of these people (Wirt Raymond, Charlotte, George W Douglas, or Thomas F.or Maud E or D Burak/Burch). I am researching a Paul. If I could eliminate this family, it would help a great deal. If you have any leads on where and when any of these people died, so I can pull an obit, I would greatly appreciate it. I you have a lead on a living George W. Douglas I would appreciate it also. Marlene ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Hi Brenda, I have not run across the M. ATHE you mention who was in the 1850 Census with your PAYNE. I have done some research on Thomas ATHEY in Georgetown trying to determine if the Elizabeth BROWN he married in 1842 was the daughter of my ancestor, John BROWN, and his first wife, whoever she might be (possibly Ann FAGAN). Thomas was born ca 1817 in Georgetown. There probably is a connection, but I do not know what. Carolyn ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Corcoran Street runs from 18th ST NW to 13th St NW. It is 2 blocks north of Logan Circle at 13th and 3 blocks north of Dupont Circle at 18th. This comes from the latest map of city of Washington. I have been looking for Laura Louise Putnam, born 1921 in Washington, DC. I found a Louisa Putman (the names Putnam/Putman are frequently mixed), born in DC, age 8 in the 1930 census living with her grandfather in Loudoun Co., VA. The grandfather is J. William Lanham. Note that a cousin Laura Costello is living there (might explain them calling the child by her middle name if this is her). If this is the Louise Putnam/Putman you want, her mother would be one of Lanham's daughters. In the 1910 census there are three who it could possibly be: Mande J. age 22 (probably Amanda or Mandy) Mary L. age 20 (L. for Laura or Louise??) Edna Ruth age 17 None of these were living at home with their parents in the 1920 census. The other daughter, Asaula (Ursula) was age 11 in the 1910 census and was still at home unmarried in the 1920 census. I suppose she could have married and had a child by 1921. Next look for a marriage in either DC or VA (probably Loudoun Co, possibly Fauquier, Fairfax, or Alexandria/Arlington) between 1910 and 1920. Try to find them in the 1920 census (I've looked some but haven't seen any good possibilities yet). Of course, this could all be incorrect speculation, but at least it's a Louis(a) of the correct age, born in the correct place, and living in a reasonable location to later marry a Fauquier man. Another idea - contact Bill Putman - go to his website (just google him) and ask if he has your Laura Louise Putnam in his data bank. I didn't see her name on his Fauquier write-up, but he still may have her. It's worth a try. Good luck! Let us know if you find anything yea or nay! Brenda Payne Rose PS - I'm going out of town and will try to check back on this later.

Thank you Brenda Rose, You may very well have found her. She was always called Louise that I know of. I will contact the man you spoke of in your email - her son Ralph is quite vague about who is who in the family, as was she. Thank you for your input and your interest. I will keep you posted as to what I find. Emaress My God provides my every need according to His riches in glory. Hi, Carolyn, I am interested in the ATHEY family in Georgetown. First, there is George Athey who married Leanna Marcey/Massey on 07 OCT 1813. Then there is am M. Athe female age 50 and an S. Athe female age 21 in the 1850 census in Georgetown. My ancestor John Payne, recently widowed witth 6 children, is living with them. John's wife was Jane Marcey/Massey, the younger sister of Leanna. I think there may be a connection between these two, but it's possible that M. Athe was just running a boardinghouse. Do any of these Athey's show up in your records? Thanks, Brenda Payne Rose

My Putman/Putnam family is from Fauquier Co. I'll keep looking for her. Brenda Payne Rose
Did you check alternate spellings, such as Naylor? Sometimes, even that late, someone might be entered under a different spelling by the census taker. I've been through several DC city directories just once, so far, and need to get to the MLK this week. What I found when I went through the DC city directories (at the Fairfax library) was that retired people were simply not listed, even in the early 20th century. (I've seen people listed as retired in city directories done in other cities.) So, I doubt she'd be in any of these. The MLK _might_ have an obituary index for DC. I don't know for sure as I've never been there. If there is one anywhere, it's likely to be there. Do you know for sure that she was born in DC? Born in '21 means that she could have been in that huge group of women who moved to DC to work there during FDR's administration, either before or after Pearl Harbor. Also, I echo the question about her name. Elizabeth Whitaker On 3/18/07, Emaress Nova <emaress_nova@yahoo.com> wrote: > > Laura Louise Putnam born November 6, 1921 in > Washington, DC. Do you know if they stayed in DC or moved away? I'm related to Putnam/Putmans from VA. Several of them moved to DC about that time. If we find she's related to one of the sons then I'll have a great deal to share. Brenda Payne Rose

This area has gone through many changes in the last 5 years. In fact it seem almost daily. If you want to learn about Corcoran Street use the Washington Post, or Washington Times for what is happening in the area. The 'townhouse' that was called a 'rowhouse' at the time you are requesting information now may be 3 or 4 apartments/condos. At the time you are talking about usually one family lived in the house. Remember that families stayed together until they married. Or they stayed to care for other older relatives any single children living in the house. Just north - about 2-3 blocks is U Street that has really gone through changes especially in the build up of condos/apartments and the entertainment areas. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
