It is Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Louis, too, and they have a home for the elderly. ---- ccraven <cecileandpat@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > Was wondering if someone could answer a question for me please, 1930 could that have been an home for children, mom remember being left there with other sibling when parents split up? Have you thought of writing to either DC Archives or DC Library and posing this question. 1930 was a very bad year because of the depression and children were being sent and left with relatives when available. Perhaps the Library of Congress would have information too. My God provides my every need according to His riches in glory. There was a Catholic orphanage in the northeast section of Washington, D.C. - St. Vincent's - I believe it was only for girls. The girls attended school at St. Anthony's at 12th & Monroe Street, N.E., DC On Mar 28, 2007, at 2:44 AM, ccraven wrote: > Was wondering if someone could answer a question for me please, > 1930 could that have been an home for children, mom remember being > left there with other sibling when parents split up? This was a Catholic children's home? The Episcopal church has religious orders as well. The Methodists and the Lutherans have also had religious orders of women known as "deaconesses," but I don't think they still do. (For instance, Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, was founded by Methodist deaconesses.) The Little Sisters of the Poor run homes for elderly people. I don't know of any Catholic religious order or congregation in the U.S. known as "Sisters of the Poor." However, there are the "Sisters of Charity" and "Daughters of Charity." There would have been more than one Catholic orphanage/children's home in the Washington area at the time. Check with the archives of the Archdiocese of Washington. Their website is at http://www.adw.org. The Archdiocese includes portions of Maryland. Northern Virginia is now under the Diocese of Arlington (http://www.arlingtondiocese.org) , but would have been under the Diocese of Richmond in 1930. (The Diocese of Arlington was established in 1974.) I googled the name. There is a Little Sisters of the Poor in DC. They care for the aged, but may have taken in a child and helped her. You could contact them and ask about their history. Hello list, I have acquired an antique photo of an ancestor. I would imagine it is cir 1869 and is in need of restoration. Where would one look to find company's that are reputable to take on this type of repair? Is there some sort of a society that may advise me? I currently have a tea towel draped over it out of the direct light. Thanks, Brenda
Brenda, What kind of damage does your picture have? My daughter and I have had some success with our own old pictures that have been damaged by brown spots, some fading and picture peeling off the backing paper. We have scanned them and sent direct to her computer and she has done a wonderful job of repairing the copy as sent to her computer and then reprinting. If that would help, we would be happy to give it a try without damaging your picture further. My God provides my every need according to His riches in glory. Time for Hands-On Preservation with Park Day 2007 The Civil War Preservation Trust and the History Channel are once again sponsoring our 11th Annual Park Day! On Saturday, April 7, 2007, volunteers throughout the country will work together to clean and repair the grounds at over 100 Civil War sites. Last year, approximately 4,000 volunteers played a vital role in sustaining these parks, providing more than 12,000 hours of service. Helping hands are needed everywhere for a wide variety of short and long term projects, providing interesting and rewarding volunteer opportunities for individuals, couples, schools, families, corporations, citizen groups and service organizations. Clubs and organizations can help with specific park improvements: trail renovation, tree planting, stream restoration, litter cleanup, minor repairs and more. The event is also perfect for Scout troop service projects or corporate team-building efforts. Without the help of volunteers, trash accumulates in these natural areas, harming wildlife, polluting lakes and rivers, and detracting from the beauty of your community. This event is a fun and effective way to improve the natural environment in your local community. Thanks to your donated time and skills, your favorite state park can see improvements now instead of sometime in the future. At each site, volunteers will get a free t-shirt and have the opportunity to hear historians tell them about the land they are helping to preserve. Plan to join fellow preservationists on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at a site near you for a day of history and hard work. Civilwar.org Cut and paste the url above for contact info for your state. Click on "Park Day" on the right hand side of the webpage Then scroll down to the bottom and click on the link to take you to the info for each state. If anyone has a problem please let me know and I'll send you the direct link and assist you as much as possible. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. When I went to St. Paul's Catholic School in the 1940s it was co-ed. Graduated from the 8 th grade there in 1949. I do remember hearing it had turned into a boys school, but was by there last summer and it was again co-ed. There were a lot of embassy kids attending at the time. I do know that it is now St. Augustine. Sounds like you went to St. Paul Catholic School. I think it was a boys school. The school and the church have been renamed St Augustine. This school had been located on between 14th and 15th Street . Prior to St Augustine moving into this building its location had been on 15th Street between R & S Streets. This occurred about 1960's. If you went to a public school that was Harrison School at 13th and V Street. This school is located across from Children's Hospital. Harrison is now a charter school. I am not sure the emphasis of this school. And Children's Hospital has moved to area that was once of Soldiers Home across facing the reservoir. I taught 1st grade at Harrison School from 1961 to 1972.And now attend St. Augustine church. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
