    1. Re: [WashDC] Cemetery ? George Washington Lodge
    2. Although I have never heard it referred to with "Lodge" in the name, I suspect it is George Washington Cemetery which also is called Washington National Cemetery. It is in Suitland, Prince George's County, Maryland across from Cedar Hill Cemetery. It is just over the DC line. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Hello, I have the obituary from the Washington Post for a relative that died Nov. 1950 and states that "Internment George Washington Lodge Cemetery". I googled but can not locate any information about this cemetery. Does anyone have an idea as to where it might be located and/or how I might be able to find more information? (He is a lifelong resident of DC so assume it is in the DC area.) Thanks Angela

    3. Angela: Appears George Washington Lodge was part of a Jewish congregation (appears that National Capitol Lodge replaced it) and burials for that congregation were at: NATIONAL CAPITAL HEBREW CEMETERY: 4708 Fable Street, Capitol Heights, MD 20743. (202) 420-9710 Caretaker: (301) 420-9710. National Capitol Hebrew Cemetery Association, Howard Katz (President) (301) 933-9710. National Capitol Hebrew Cemetery is located in S.E. Washington and partly in Capitol Heights, MD (PG Co.) Take Beltway Exit 15B (Central Ave. West) and follow Central Avenue approx. 2.8 mi. Turn left onto Yost St. and right onto Central Ave. Go approx. 0.7 mi. to Larchmont Ave. Turn left, Go approx. 0.7 mi. and turn right on Fable Street 2nd cemetery used by that Lodge was Mt. Lebanon Cemetery and I found a reference that it was also in PG Co MD but cannot find a yellow pages listing for it or any further information. The National Capitol Hebrew Cemetery Association may have more information for you (contact name & phone number above) I find no transcriptions for this cemetery listed on our site (MD Tombstone Transcription Project), Findagrave or Internment.net. You should call the cemetery and ask what their procedure for doing lookups in their records is, some cemeteries charge an upfront fee to do that. 3. Yes, The stuff in the metal filing cabinets came out the best from what I heard. It was a heat gun that caused the fire. They are like a hair dryer more than a blow torch. They are used to strip paint. At first I thought it happened on the roof, and my husband said it didn't make sense-he's a construction superintendent. But when I read this morning that they were stripping paint on a window he said that did make sense. The construction crew never called the fire department, a lady looked out a window, saw flames on the roof and called. When I told that to my husband that the crew had been fighting it about 10 0r 15 minutes he gave me a look. I believe that was because a crew would try to put it out themselves without calling first. I can see that happening-very unfortunate for the library though. From what I read when the Fire Department arrived the roof was engulfed with flames. One thing that didn't help was that the two closest fire hydrants were not working. Apparently the water pressure was too low on them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Boswell" <whboswell@verizon.net> To: <washingtondc@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 06, 2007 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [WashDC] Fw: Peabody Room photographs: before/after >I wonder if the stuff in the filing cabinets were saved. 3. Shortly after the fire, I went to NBC.com and got channel 4 in Washington. They reported that people got into Peabody room as quickly as posssible and got out quite a bit of stuff and began drying them. The fourth picture shows a room full of boxes all sealed and marked. I would guess from that that much of what was in files is now packed up for removal to a place where work can proceed. 3. As far as I know Mary Murray Grady was born in Alexandria around 1863. She was never in SC. I am trying to determine if she is the daughter of Levi Murray, Jr. The funeral director was Cunningham. Does anyone know if there was a funeral director by that name. Most of my Murrays were buried from Wheatley. 3. I don't know of one. Do you have an obituary? The DC library has some sort of index for obituaries that appeared in The Washington Post. Since you're posting from SC -- was she from South Carolina? If she was, there might be an obituary for her in the newspaper that covered her part of the state. (When I lived in South Carolina, I saw lots of obituaries for folks who'd been born in South Carolina or had lived there, and died somewhere else.) The library in Greenville has a obituary index for The Greenville News in the Carolina Room. It covers the period from the early 1920s to 2000. 3. Eileen, I looked into the Wilkes Street Cemetery Complex and it is made up of many old cemeteries in Alexandria. Many of them were attached to particular churches. Do you happen to know the religious affiliation of the Gradys? Another source might be the Alexandria Library and the archives of the Alexandria Gazette. Word has been received that the ceiling in Peabody Room remains intact and that the contents on the room only received water damage. No fire damage was evident. Since the bulk of the collection is in file cabinets and book cases with glass doors, hopefully not too much water got in. I have not been inside but a conservation company is on site removing materials. I hope for the best. Jerry A. McCoy Peabody Room
