    3. Social Security would still list you whether you're an employee of the government or not. My own listings with the Social Security Administration show my government time blank because I was paying into another system, but still paying for Medicare. If you want to try to get a death certificate (DC Arhives or otherwise), they will require a death date/burial date and he must have died in DC. However, if they died in another state and were transferred to a DC cemetery then there would be a transit certificate. I'm not sure if the DC Archives have these. I know cemeteries have them for the ones transferred from one place to another. A transit certificate has most of the information from a death certificate, but the primary purpose is for a local funeral home to take possession, transfer the remains to a cemetery, and burial. I know D.C. law requires a transit certificate especially for out-of-state deaths. These are provided by the funeral home/mortuaries. When I worked at Congressional Cemetery, I recorded all of the einformation from it to the database, then filed it away in one of the cabinets. -----Original Message----- From: washingtondc-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:washingtondc-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Emaress Nova Sent: Saturday, July 21, 2007 1:28 PM To: washingtondc@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WashDC] looking death record/obit for Albert W Lybrand Kate, Do you know if Mr. Lybrand was still living in DC in 1962 when he last corresponded with Washington & Lee? She was born on October 4, 1851, according to the family records. At one time I had in my possession a box full of pictures and post cards, some of which were signed "Sallie" and talking about what she and George were doing. I would like a birth and death date for him and also a place of death. Also a date of death for her and their place of burial. Thank you all for any information you can give me. 3. Hiya Mary- That's a good question, and I do believe he worked for the government, so that would explain why I can't find him on the SSDI. I will ask if he wrote from DC or VA, and see if I can get that resolved. :) The directories are a good idea too. I haven't been working on this part of the family for long, so I have to investigate the possibilities that exist in DC. Thank you for the ideas. :) Kate Emaress Nova <emaress_nova@yahoo.com> wrote: Kate, Do you know if Mr. Lybrand was still living in DC in 1962 when he last corresponded with Washington & Lee? There was an apparent cholera epidemic in that year (probably more years than just 1832) and the names of those who died from the disease were often published in the "National Intelligencer." Might hard copies of these records still exist? and where? Sincerely, Toni Lake

I have a personal interest in the Semmes family because one Benedict I. Semmes (a doctor) lived in an historical building my family owned (St. James) from 1935 to 1978 located in Piscataway, MD. I believe both men had connections to St. Mary's County, but have not been able to make the exact connection. While I can find much on the Rhodes Tavern, I find little on its namesake. Thanks for any help. 1. [WashDC] Old Penny Postcards
    2. This is a neat site that someone might be able to find some old pictures on these penny postcards. I found several from my father-in-law's hometown..... http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/special/ppcs/ppcs.html

    3. I'm playing catch-up on my e-mail. You might have more luck if you can track down the particular archives for the type of Baptist church. (I'm not a Baptist, but I know there are several types of Baptist churches.) Look for the web site for whatever type of Baptist church this particular church is and then look for the archives that includes DC. I've done research for years on some ancestors who were clergy in the South Carolina Methodist conference. The archivist is constantly pleading for churches in that conference to send in their old records as many churches' records have gotten lost.
