    1. [WashDC] James E. BERRY, Ebbitt house stables. livery owner
    2. Wendy Baker
    3. Does anyone have any information on a James E. BERRY, born March 1839 in Wakefield, Carroll Co, NH. His wife, Abby D. UNKNOWN was also born in NH abt 1851. They had two daughters, Eunice BERRY, born May 1881 and Alice BERRY born August 1883, both in NH. In the 1880 Federal Census for Washington, DC, it shows James (age 40) and Abby (age 29) boarding in the hotel of the wealthy Hiram J. King on F Street, NW, and James working at "keeping a livery stable". They were married during that census year. In the 1900 Federal Census for Washington, DC, it shows James E. Berry, now widowed and 61 yrs old, living on G Street with his two daughters, Eunice, 19, single and "at school", and Alice, 16, single and "attending school." It says "livery stable" for James' occupation. Interestingly, it lists both girls as born in New Hampshire, not Washington, DC. James and Abby may have returned to NH for the birth of their daughters? Cannot find any proof or information. Again in 1910, James is listed with his daughters, Eunice and Alice renting in Precinct 1 in Washington, DC. James had not remarried, was 71 yrs old and occupation listed as "proprietor livery." Eunice, 28 and still single, has occupation listed as "none." Her sister Alice, 26 and also still single, is listed as a teacher. I assume James died after 1910 as there are no other listings of him in the 1920 Census. In 1890, various Washington, DC directories list him as proprietor of Ebbitt House Stables. I have information on James' parents and siblings, but would be most interested in learning more about James' death and burial, all information about his wife Abby, and his two daughters Eunice and Alice, who seem to disappear after 1910. Did they marry? I also would love to know more about the Ebbitt House and its stables. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. Wendy

    3. Hi Marguerite, Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I have no information about Michael O'Leary, other than that he was born about1819 in Ireland and died in Annapolis in 1899. I have even less on his wife Bridget. This is my late husband's family, and his father, Samuel Garrett Swain, Jr. seemed unaware of any possible cousins. I suppose it is possible that Michael and Bridget came over from Ireland alone, and had no other children other than Mary and Maggie. 3. I am researching an O'Leary line in DC. Arthur O'Leary (born Ireland 1818) married Catherine Costello (born Ireland abt 1830) marriage abt about 1848. Their children (all born in the District of Columbia) are Jeremiah (born 1850), John (born 1863), Timothy (born 1859), Mary C. (born 1861) Margaret "Maggie" (born 1867) Catherine "Kate" (born 1869) Johannah M. (born 1869). 3. Sue, Have you checked the 1870 DC census for this person (then aged 61) to see where she fits in? If you don't find her, I'd try 1860 and 1850 as well; if she was born in DC & died there as well there's a good chance she was living there during some of those years. Also, if you get an exact date of death you can get the death certificate at no charge - if there is one - from the DC Archives. Maybe look for an obituary? Good hunting! 3. Do you have the date of death? The ones from 1874 to 1932 can be obtained from the DC Archives if you have the exact date of death. More recent ones have to come from the Vital Records office. Unfortunately, the death certificates from the early 1900s do NOT have parents, spouse, or name of informant. They do have burial information, and I have found other family members in various cemeteries by this means.
