Hello Everyone, A couple of months ago I posted some pages on the list from an old Teacher's Journal found in Rosa Barkanda Augustine's effects. It Includes notes on Orphan's Asylum and various D.C. Schools. I'm not sure of the teacher's name. I think the teacher was either Janey T Freeman, or John T Freeman. Both lived in the Washington DC area. Janey was a teacher and John was a principal. Since my last posting I have been very busy and unable to resume posting. I now have some extra time and will continue to post pages from the journal until it is all published. To see pages that I have already posted to this list go to my webpage: http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/TeachersJournal.html Here are the new pages: Pages 16-17 Orphan's Asylum # Name Nickname Born Admitted Remarks 134 James Meyer James March 1, 1888 Ran away April 14, 1888 135 Ferdinand Mulkow Ferd 1888 Ran away July 4, 1888 married Lillian Sadler April 23, 1907 136 Edward Sauermann Eddie Sept. 30, 1884 Feb. 28, 1890 137 John Sauermann Johnnie April 26, 1886 Feb. 28, 1890 139 Lillian King Lillie Dec. 20, 1888 April 21, 1890 Died of consumption Sept. 13, 1890 Prospect Hill 140 William Egloff Willie July 15, 1890 141 Friedrich Dubi Fritzie Nov. 24, 1886 July 26, 1890 Mother remarried, he left Sept. 23, 1890 142 Mamie Lavender Mamie Sept 1883 143 Carla Obermeyer Carla June 4, 1888 June 4, 1888 Died August 17, 1888 Prospect Hill 144 Hermine Obermeyer Miney June 4, 1888 June 4, 1888 Went with her parents, our supt. & matron, Oct. 2, 1891 145 Maria Almandinger Marie Jan. 6, 1886 Oct. 2, 1890 146 Martha Almandinger Martha Jan. 6, 1886 Oct. 2, 1890 147 Mabel Kraft Mabel Aug. 1, 1883 Nov. 15, 1890 148 Albert Kraft Albert May 10, 1885 Nov. 15, 1890 149 Emily Kraft Emmy June 7, 1881 Nov. 17, 1890 150 Kate Kraft Katie June 7, 1881 Nov. 17, 1890 151 Christine Almandinger Christine Dec. 2, 1890 152 Ida Kraft Idy Dec. 18, 1886 Jan 18, 1891 153 Wilhelmine Heitzler Minnie Oct. 30, 1882 May 2, 1891 Parents reclaimed her Nov. 24, 1891 154 Eloise Heitzler Lulu Dec 24, 1884 May 2, 1891 Parents reclaimed her Nov. 24, 1891 155 Matilda Heitzler Tillie Sept. 20 1887 May 2, 1891 Parents reclaimed her Nov. 24, 1891 156 GustavHoffmann Gussie June 22, 1891 157 Carl Jeckel Carl July 7, 1891 158 Marie Parker May May 19, 1884 July 26, 1891 Mother remarried and claimed her Jan. 27, 1893 159 Wilhelmina Eschinger Minnie Feb Sept 10, 1891 Left for a place of service Feb 1892 160 Ernst Eschinger Ernst Sept 10, 1891 Left with his parents Marc 4, 1892 161 William Eschinger Willie Sept 10, 1891 Left with his parents Marc 4, 1892 162 Louisa Eschinger Louisa Sept 13, 1891 Left for a place of service Feb 1892 Trisha Swallows Carden Nashville, Tennessee G-ma@home.com http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/
Hi Guys: Just browsing and came across this site. Rather interesting. Take care, Deb http://ncr.gsa.gov/historicpreservation/clarabarton/excerpts/default.htm
Hi, everyone! Is anyone familiar with this Catholic Church? I found something with Mother's handwritting mentioning this church and burial of someone. I'm not sure if Forst Glen in is in DC or MD. Thanks in advance for any help! Best regards, Elizabeth
Dear List, Thought I would share a recent success story. I discovered my ggggrandmother in the St. Elizabeth's Insane Asylum in the 1880 census. There are some records from this hospital at the National Archives (NARA) in D.C. If anyone is searching for ancestors who were patients or employees of this hospital I would suggest checking the NARA website to see if any of their records sound promising. I sent them an email asking for records of my ancestor (and quoting the number of the record group that was most likely to contain her information) and two weeks later I got her case file in the mail! What a surprise! The information in the file gave just a few bits of information about her family, but it I did learn her date of death and about a sibling that I wasn't aware of. However, the records were really fascinating and gave a glimpse of life during that time. It also contained a copy of a letter written by my ancestor in her own hand. Happy hunting Ginger Gillin (D.C. surnames: Gheen, Fearson, McPherson, Woodward, Thecker)
Good detective work, Betty! I'll assume that those not included in the first four replies yesterday will now purchase copies from Daedalus. Thanks for notifying the list of a good opportunity and of a reliable source for books in general. Sherry and List, Sherry, thanks for your personal reply. I was able to find the book on line and thought all might be interested (should there not be enough books in Houston to go around): http://www.daedalus-books.com/default.cfm?&CFID=703990&CFTOKEN=89434921 The price is $6.98 - hardcopy (Standard price $29.95) - it is the same book. I have ordered books from Daedalus before. They are prompt and very courteous. Would order from them again. I called their 800 number, although you can order on line, also. This is their homepage. http://www.daedalus-books.com/default.cfm?&CFID=703990&CFTOKEN=89434921 If my "hot spot" doesn't work as planned, I searched for Walt Whitman and it was one of the search results. Hi again, I have had several requests for the book "The Sacrificial Years." Enjoyed each response. I will check a second bookstore tomorrow to try to find additional copies of the book. I'll keep a list of names in order of their receipt. The book mentions (several times) a Major HAPGOOD of D.C. who served as Paymaster. Whitman sometimes worked for him to earn money to buy the soldiers food and token gifts. Any Hapgoods on this list? Sherry
Hi Everybody, I may be the last person with D.C. ancestry to have discovered this little book about Whitman's amazing, devoted volunteer efforts in D.C. hospitals during four years of the Civil War, but I'm glad I found it, even at this late date. Some of the reading is tough, such as descriptions of the deplorable conditions of the wounded and dying soldiers. However, it also gives some interesting glimpses of what was happening in D.C. between 1862 and 1865. There are quite a few photographs --- various D.C. hospitals, the Capitol before and after the Dome was completed, soldiers, leaders, etc. Occasionally, there is a reference to some specific street address or location, and I find that these are at times very near where my HOLLIDGE and RAWLINGS ancestors were living. Went back to the bookstore (Half-Price Books) today and noted that there were four more copies of the book on the shelf. They're selling for $6.98 plus tax. Original price was $29.95. They're new, in perfect condition. If anyone has an interest in the book, I'd be willing to purchase a copy for him/her and ship it book rate, which would put the total cost at about $9.50. For anyone wishing to search for the book independently, the editor was John Harmon McElroy, and it was published in 1999 by David R. Godine, Publisher, Inc., Box 450, Jaffrey, NH 03452.
