Dear Bill and list I have been wanting to pass this on for years and time has slipped by. Now that Bill is working as a part time Genealogist at Congressional this could help him and some on the list. There is a book there named Burial Register of United States Personnel in Congressional Cemetery. The names of some cover the missing years June 1861 threw 1862 and 1862 threw 1866. These years were missing in Washington DC I guess because of the Civil War. Many of the names in this Book are surnames from Fairfax Co Va Alexandra Va and Charles Co Md.{ Union Personnel that is} The Confederate names were from the old Capitol prison and from the southern states not DC. I have found some DC names in this book that was not listed any were else. I hope this may help someone as I was going to list the names on the list but there are to many. If you go there or Bill looks for you I would give a donation as this is one of the best Cemetery's to do research in. Thank you Bill. Anthony Long

Congressional Cemetery is about to unveil their new website very soon. It is now in beta testing but will include online obituaries for many persons buried there. This may not include every single person buried in the cemetery, but does cover a number of persons. The interment index is not available online as of yet. It is in the process of being updated and may be available in print and/or CD in the near future. There are plans for it possibility being available online, but this is up for further discussion at this time. As the current genealogical researcher for the cemetery, I can do lookups through the records or you may visit the cemetery Monday thru Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Please note that most lookups done by volunteers are restricted to surname and given names. No long lists of surnames. You may wish a copy of pages from the interment book at a nominal cost. This helps support funding for the cemetery as it is non-profit and volunteer operated. You may send your requests to me and I will respond as soon as I can. As soon as the new website is available, I will give them site address on this list. Elizabeth, I have dealt with Fort Lincoln and I'm afraid they are not very friendly unless you have money in your hands. They are only interested in selling, not genealogists. They will tolerate you long enough to give you information to find ONE and, if you're lucky, two grave sites, but they will definitely not give you access to any of their records nor are they willing to look anything up for you. Maybe I just hit them on a bad day -- let me know if you have a better experience! The person's card I got was the director of administration, Emily S. Hoff (this was several years ago.) Everyone, I'm so excited! After much study I have figured out who the Unknown teacher was who kept the Journal. It is Clara Brandt. She was one of the Orphans in the Asylum. She was born December 25, 1869 and admitted to the Asylum on December 2, 1879 at age 9 along with 2 younger siblings, Alfred Brandt and Wilhelmine Brandt. The very first entry in the Journal is Clara Brandt - Confirmed- May 25, 1884 at age 14. She was appointed public school teacher Feb. 1. 1891 at age 21. She "went housekeeping" at 1601 N.J. Ave. N.W. Sept. 29, 1891 and was joined by her sister Wilhelmine on Nov. 9, 1891. In the journal she usually identifies herself with the initials Miss. C.M.T. B. The last entry in the journal is her class for the year 1926 at the age of 57. She taught school for 35 years. If anyone has access to the Microfilm of the 1901 Washington DC city Directory I would love to find out where she was living. (or any year for that matter). Also any information on Clara's brother, Alfred Brandt would be interesting. He ran away from the Asylum and joined the Marines when he was 15. Later he married Mary James on Nov. 12, 1900. If anyone has information on the Brandt family please let me know. I would like to find out who Clara Brandt's parents were and what happened to them. My thanks to the list for all the encouragement I've received while posting the journal entries. I'm over half way finished and hopefully will have it completely transcribed in another week. http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/TeachersJournal.html Trisha Swallows Carden Nashville, Tennessee G-ma@home.com http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/

Hi, Has anyone dealt with the Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in DC? Is there a phone or contact person? Thanks so very much. Best, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Hi, Elizabeth & List-- Fort Lincoln Cemetery 3401 Bladensburg Rd Brentwood, MD (301) 864-5090 5 miles from the center of Washington, DC I last visited there in the Fall of 1999. As cemeteries go, they were neither helpful nor unhelpful. I provided a name & date of death and it took them nearly 30 minutes to find this mid-1960s interment in their records. I had a copy of the newspaper obit with me, and if I hadn't had that I feel that they would have told me that they had no record. They handed me a map & pointed me in the general direction but that was about it. There were no groundskeepers that I could see to ask for help, and many of the graves were unmarked. A few of the newer markers had numbered locations on them, which helped a bit in confirming that I was in the right general area. Although it was a dry day, there were several places that were signicicantly overwatered and very muddy, making the going difficult. It's not my favorite of the DC area cemeteries!
