    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] 1938 death
    2. Trish Carden
    3. I need some help from the list. We just heard a family story of an uncle of my husband who died in 1938 in a motorcycle accident. We didn't even know he existed. The Augustine family was living in Hyattsville, Maryland in 1938. The uncle would have been born after 1921. So he is not listed in the 1920 census. This is the Augustine family he was from: Parents: JOHN AUGUSTINE b. July 26, 1894 and ROSA BARKANDA (owner of the Teacher's Journal) b.September 29, 1915 Children: i. ROSALINE ELIZABETH "LIBBY" AUGUSTINE, b. July 04, 1916; d. July 07, 1997, Maryland. ii. JOHN LEO "BUDDY" AUGUSTINE, b. September 06, 1917. iii. FRANCIS WALES AUGUSTINE, b. December 06, 1919; d. February 2000. iv. THERESA MYRLE AUGUSTINE, b. March 13, 1921, Kenilworth, Prince Georges Co., MD; d. Dec 24, 1988, Nashville, Davidson Co., TN. (this is my mother-in-law) v. Unknown male Augustine born after 1921 died 1938 in motorcycle accident Does anyone have any clues for finding out his name? Is there a death index for that year? Thanks, Trisha Swallows Carden Nashville, Tennessee G-ma@home.com http://www.tcarden.com/tree/ensor/

Found SSDI Horace MCLEAREN, b. 9/17/1881, d. 10/71 in DC. Does anyone have any info about this family in the DC area. My grandmother was allegedly a dressmaker in DC prior to her marriage to Norman Phelps MASON. She had sisters Virgie, "Beanie" and Lou (Louise?). Thanks. 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Match pocket
    2. The match pocket was a small metal box used to keep matches contained in case of accidental ignition. No "safety matches" at that time; they could even ignite from friction between match-heads. It's also called a Match Safe. Everyone needed matches to light gas mantles and kerosene lamps, responsibilities not considered beyond the capabilities of a child. My grandmother, age 6 in a rural midwestern community, was responsible for cleaning the household kerosene lamps, trimming the wicks and relighting them at night. There were usually two or three boys responsible for the lamps and fires in a schoolroom and perhaps the gift was in recognition of this young man's service. Jan Hall

    2. Trish Carden
    3. I was also curious when transcribing "match pocket". After seeing your email I did a search on the internet and didn't find anything that would clear up the mystery. So I went back to the journal and took another look. At first hand it looks like "match pocket" but it could by "watch pocket". I'm not sure that helps for how could someone give a "watch pocket" as a gift. I thought "watch pockets" were made into the garments worn as in a vest or pants watch pocket. I also did a search on the internet for "watch pocket" and found a Butcher's Watch Pocket c. 1914 that is a small folding camera with tapered bellows taking pictures 23 inches square. But I think this would have been too expensive a gift. I don't think I've helped any. But maybe someone else on the list can. 3. Hi All, I'm looking at a little book which my D.C. grandmother, MABEL RAWLINGS, once owned. The title is "Boat Sailing in Fair Weather and Foul," written by a Captain A. J. KENEALY in 1905. This book belonged to a GRIFFITH L? JOHNSON in 1907. I believe he was a sailing enthusiastic, a boat owner, and a good friend of my great-grandfather. Does anyone recognize the name and have any information about "CAPTAIN JOHNSON"? I am interested in learning more about him and his connection to the family, since his name appears several times in my grandmother's letters from that period. Thanks! Sherry Simpson Houston

    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] MARRIAGE LICENSE BUREAU
    2. Pat & Gary Kelly
    3. Hello to All! Well, of course in the past I have heard many stories about the DC Marriage License Bureau. Here is my tale of woe. I accessed the web site, took down the information (including the fact that it would be a two week wait--expecting from experience 4-6 weeks). What the web site failed to state was that genealogy searches are NOT PRIORITY, the $10.00 fee covers only a one year search, that the information I provided from the Marriage Bureau Index was not useful and they had to search manually anyway. I mailed my request on 4/24/01; it was received 4/27/01 (by their admission). Early in June, two months later, I called to be assurred that someone was coming back from vacation and it would be seen to OR I could come there and do it myself (had I been able to I would have done that initially!!) and that it would be another 6-8 weeks. I called again Friday, 8/17/01 and was told they would get right on it. Today I received a call in which I learned about the $10/per year caveat. So in essence my money is lost (and by the way I requested to have it returned when I was told "another 6-8 weeks" and was informed that was not possible!!!). So after four months I have no licenses and am $30.00 poorer. So much for my experience. Now I ask what can be done? I told the clerk that I thought they should amend their web site to include the full explanation; she said they were working it but were too short-staffed. Fortunately, this is one of the very few instances in which I have had an unacceptable experience with a government office when requesting material. Why must requests to the District of Columbia always be such a huge problem?
