The Presbyterian Graveyard no longer exists. It was located about 34th and Q NW in Georgetown. It ceased operation about 1896. According to Wesley Pippengers book "DC Death records". The cemetery was purchased as a public park in 1903 and by 1907 all markers were pretty much gone. From reading the book the remains of the dead never were removed. AS far as where your note came from, there is an LDS tape of Washington Death records which in part lists burials in the Presbyterian Graveyard. Beyond that your best bet might be the local Presbyterian Church. Does anyone know how/where I can get a copy of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators Trial Transcript? I recently learned that one or more of my relatives gave testimony @ the trial I would like to see what they had to say. I have recently learned that one of my brickwall branches settled in the DC area in 1921, and many were still there in 1988. The surnames are FRANKLIN, MCCOMBS, and LARGESS. Would appreciate hearing from anyone researching any of these families. Audrey Sever audralph@the-spa.com
William Gain and his wife, Fannie moved to Washington, DC from Baltimore, MD. about 1900. Would like to connect with other family researchers. Mary
Hello list, Just a reposting of my interest in any mention of BLETHYN name in Washington DC 1890-1940. Best Regards Allen in sunny Aberavon S. WALES.
Are you sure that she died in the District? Perhaps it was across the District line in either MD or VA? Do you know if she attended church regularly? Many churches maintain a register of funerals services held. Where are other family members buried, particularly her husband? Don't just rely on the engravings that appear on the stone--check with the cemetery office to confirm the names of EVERYONE buried in the grave. Many families use the same undertaker generation after generation--is that a possibility here? Undertakers traditionally maintain very good records of services that they organize. If you can narrow down the year, MLK Library's Washingtoniana Room has the old Evening Star on microfilm. I've done searches like this in the past & you can probably review a full month of funeral notices (they're almost always on the same page, day after day) in about 30 minutes. There's no index to funeral notices in the Star, so this is the only way to go. Don't forget to try distant relatives, too. Often a story will be handed down from one generation to the next about someone's death. It's possible that someone fairly young may have heard such a story from older relatives. Also, was Maud a given name in the 19th century or a nickname? Try backtracking to the 1880, 1900, and 1910 Census records to see if she used Maud consistently, or perhaps another first name. Good luck! Dear Listers, My widowed grandmother lived and worked in Wash., DC. According to the 1920 census she worked as a clerk for the government (no department) That's the last record I can find of her. >From other information (something I remember my father saying), I'm fairly sure she died about that time. No death record at Vital Records, at least they couldn't find it -twice. Possibly some error in spelling or someone's misunderstood handwriting from the death certificate. She was in the 1923 city directory. But I found another ancestor in the DC city directory that I know was gone two years earlier. Questions: Has anyone had experience in hiring a researcher to go to Vital Records and conduct their own search? Is this allowed? The FHL has a Death Index for DC for those years but I didn't find her. I've had no luck with cemetery records. Just thought I'd check to see if any bright person on this list has some wonderful idea on a next step. Many thanks. Betty
I have someone in the 1840 census that is listed as living in the Country Part. Does anyone know where that might be? Jan Parker
I would call them. Listed in the DC phone book, blue pages, under DC Government. Does someone know how you would check to see if someone had been a patient at St. Elizabeth's Hospital? My brother believes that my grandmother's brother was at St. Elizabeth's and died there. He doesn't know the time period. I have a photograph of my greatgrandmother and her living children, including my grandmother and this brother, which I believe was taken in the 1940s or the early 1950s. My grandmother died in 1957. Any suggestions would be helpful. Barbara
Can someone please tell me how to find a marriage record from 1862 or 1863. I don't have a specific date. Thanks. Merle
While Chicago is blessed with wonderful research libraries, including many many microfilm reels of Washington, D.C. newspapers, 1921 seems to be the year that nobody in Chicago has any copies in their collection. Unfortunately, 1921 is the year I need. If anyone is looking at D.C. newspaper reels from that period, would they mind scrolling over to look at obits for the following two names/ dates? husband: George A. GILLILAND, died 25 July 1921 in D.C., buried in Gleenwood Cemetery. wife: Charity Butcher GILLILAND, died 26 September 1921 in D.C., also buried in Glenwood. These are my maternal grandfather's paternal grandparents, of whom we have almost no information other than a marriage in Ohio and a few census records (they seem to have hidden from the census taker a couple of times before they moved to D.C.) Any help is very much appreciated. In return, I am in Chicago with the wonderful Newberry Library here, can do a look-up from those holdings. Thanks, Dennis Roberts denniswine@aol.com
Looking for information on Cornelius Carter, Born Nov 13, 1917, possibly in Alabama, died Jan 1974 in DC. Could someone check local obit information for survivor and parent details? My Dear Friends, As of Monday I am requesting that we all restart talking about Genealogy. I know that we want to talk about what has happened but I have been notified that Rootsweb has a new web site concerning the matter. We all have felt sadness in the matter, and that so of us have lost family and friends. SO with this said I am going to let it continue through out this weekend. Say what you need and feel. I understand. Many of you don't know me but during the month of July I had lost my mother due to illness. In wake of what has Happened at the World Trade Center I know and understand that you need to talk about it. If you still need to discuss the matter you can go to http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=usa-tragedy.mourning , and sign up to that group to discuss the matter. Because of the catastrophe that happened in the United States Tuesday, 11 Sept., 2001, MyFamily.com (RootsWeb.com and Ancestry.com) has created a special Message Board for those who wish to express or share condolences, sorrow, prayers, and thoughts for the victims, their families and friends. However, this is not a board for discussion on how the U.S. should resolve this issue or about how the search for those responsible is going. This is a letter that I also received from Vicki at Rootsweb. Thank you in this matter. Holly King List Mom

My thoughts are with all of you.... Flying our flag is something everyone can do, so is driving with headlights on. After the bombing in OKC in '95 everyone, and I mean everyone, put on their headlights when driving. It was a tremendous showing of unity and support, and gave comfort to those affected. Hi Washington D. C. Listers, I can hardly express my sadness and grief. As a native Washingtonian, I am painfully aware that some of those that were injured or perished in the Pentagon yesterday could well be former neighbors, acquaintances an friends of my family from when we lived in D. C. (and Arlington) years ago. I cried at work and many of my coworkers, knowing I was from that area, stopped by to see if I had any family involved. For a short time, I did think that a cousin worked there and later found out that he hadn't worked at the Pentagon for a while. My sister normally goes into D. C. or Rockville on Mondays for meetings related to her work; Yesterday morning she cancelled a meeting in D. C. because her son had a fever and her husband was not able to stay home with him (rare, because he is a self-employed artist who can usually spontaneously amend his schedule more readily than my sister!) I had a heck of a time getting through to her to make sure she was okay. I feel helpless that I am so far from the city I love so much (warts and all). My daughter and I will try to donate blood this week. We are praying and will continue to pray. I am leaving momentarily to go to work. I wrk for an insurance company that serves members with a military affiliation. Let's pray for all of them, for all the victims, their families, the resue and emergency workers and their families, too. I am wearing red, white and blue today - as well as my American Flag lapel pin, in a show of support for all Americans affected. If anyone has a suggestion for another way that D. C.'s far-flung native sons and daughters, such as my family, can help, please let me know. God Bless Us All.
