In answer to the question about Methodist archives: Each Conference of the United Methodist Church has its own Conference Archive. (A Conference is the Methodist equivalent of a diocese.) The archives for the Baltimore-Washington Conference are held at Lovely Lane Museum, 2200 St. Paul Street, Baltimore MD 21218, phone 410-889-4458. The archivist is Suni Johnson, and she's usually there Monday through Friday 10-4. There is also a national archive, held at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. However, if you are looking for individual baptism, marriage, or burial records, you need to go to the church where the event occurred. With a few notable exceptions, those records are held in the local churches. The main exception is in the case of a church that goes out of business. Those records are transferred to the Conference Archive. In the DC area, the records of Dumbarton United Methodist Church in Georgetown are held at the Historical Society of Washington, and some of the records of Congress Street Methodist Protestant Church are held at Wesley Theological Seminary. In both cases, the local church records are of particular historic interest, although both congregations are still in business. Conference archives are mostly papers and records of pastors, church agencies, and closed churches and church periodicals. Jane Donovan
Hi, Trish-- That's a new one...most parishes are pretty good about releasing the information from their records, particularly when it's something as old as that. I'm not sure that the parishes, or even Mt. Olivet Cemetery, for that matter, made a record of a person's parents--even DC death certificates did not include this information until about 1921 or so. Technically, a funeral/burial was not a sacrament, so records were not as detailed as those involving baptism & marriage. A couple of thoughts: #1) If you have a date of death, check the Evening Star for an obituary notice. #2) Check the cemetery to see who else is buried in the grave...may give some clue, or at least give you some new names, dates & obits to research in the Star. #3) See if there is any reference to parents on the cemetery monument. #4) Depending on the undertaker, (Geiers, Tultavull & some others) may have old records on file with the Historical Society on P Street near Dupont Circle...may be some clues in those records. Reaching back to that previous generation is always a tough one...We succeeded on some of ours, simply because an elderly cousin died in 1921, and there were her parents' names on the DC death certificate...names known to everyone in the family back then, but recorded NOWHERE else! Good luck! Yvonne, Interesting! I would think we would have to be talking the same people -- how many W. S. Freemans in Mt. Rainier could there have been? Burial data on both Nellie Freemans was the same. Arrangements were handled by Gasch's Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville MD; services were at St. John's Episcopal Church, 34th and Rainier Ave., Mt. Rainier, MD; interment was at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. My Dad has my grandmother's photo album, but I know there are pictures in it of Nellie and her son, Jimmy (James W.) If you are interested in copies, we could arrange it if you want to email me privately with your address. Is anyone on this list researching the Caton or Keating family who lived in Georgetown during the 1800's? They are descendents of Michael Caton / Keating who came from Ireland around 1825 - 30. I've been researching them for the past few years and would be happy to exchange information -- Sue in Washington State
I've copied the following from postings to the list over the last couple of years. Haven't had occasion to use them, but you can try: 202 671-1105 or 202-727-2054 (This was the preferred number) Try 202-671-1113 and ask for Francis Alexander. Robert Nelson (archivist) 202-671-1107 FAX number 202 727-6076 Don't know if they're all still in existence. Barbara
I received information on my REESE family also from this UM Hist. Soc. When I sent my letter I also enclosed a small donation to help out. It took about 4 weeks or so. Cheryl --- "Janice M. One reason for the difficulty in obtaining DC birth certificates is that they were filed by date in the order received--not alphabetically. And Patsy is right, the child's given name was not provided, except as a supplemental report submitted at a later date (very few people chose to do this). Some doctors, hospitals, and midwives were very prompt, and filed certificates within a few days of the birth. Others took their time, and certificates were frequently filed a month or even longer after the birth...makes for very difficult research. For those families with a particular religion, Church records are often the way to go in this case. Particularly for DC's once-large Catholic community, just knowing your ancestors' general neighborhood will allow you to identify the correct Catholic church. Our family has had a great deal of success obtaining baptismal records this way, with the added benefit that Church records name the child, the parents, as well as the godparents, plus the date of birth. We can then go back & obtain the civil birth record more easily. Keep in mind that Congress provides the funding for everything that goes on in the District of Columbia, and that throughout our country's history there has always been a money crunch, with the District frequently being left short of funds. Helen, The DC birth records that I've obtained over the years don't have the name of the child on them. They are apparently filed under the parents' names, and the child's name is "infant male" or "infant female". Even if you provide the exact birth date of the child, they don't seem to be able to find it without the parents' names. I suspect that these records have not been indexed except by the parents' names, which seems strange to us in this age of computerization, but remember that the records weren't created in the first place with future genealogists in mind. Also remember that the DC government is perpetually on the brink of bankruptcy, and the indexing of early birth records is probably pretty low on the priority list. Patsy Lowe
Thanks, Sue. I would be grateful for any information. Do the obits indicate burial places? I know that Thomas Stouton Freeman was buried at All Faith Episcopal Cemetery, Huntersville, St. Mary's County, MD in 1909. My father's funeral book (June 1946) shows visitors' signatures for Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Freeman, Annie May Freeman, and Annie M. Freeman (Anne Myrtle Burroughs) -- all of Mt. Rainier. None are buried at All Faith. Hi Yvonne, I'm afraid the only one I know a death date on is Nellie Freeman. My grandmother had the death notice in her collection, and now that I'm looking I see there are two, with two different dates, and both were married to a William S. Freeman. It seems like I remember asking my grandmother about that before she died and she told me they were two different people, but I can't remember now. I will have to ask my Dad and see if he can remember. Anyway, one notice says: "Freeman, Nellie C. On Friday, December 1, 1961, Nellie C. Freeman of 3404 Snepherd St., Mt. Rainier, Md., beloved wife of William S. Freeman, and mother of Mrs. Barbara K. Skinner, Mrs. Nellie D. Howlin, Mr. Karl A. Young, Jr., and a stepson, Mr. James W. Freeman. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Madeline M. Gleeson, and two grandchildren....." and the other: "Freeman, Nellie E. On Sunday, March 22, 1953, at Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C., Nellie E. Freeman, (nee Snowden) of 4021 37th St., Mount Rainier, Md., beloved wife of William S. Freeman, mother of James W. Freeman, sister of Charlotte S. Ballie....." I'm almost certain the second one is the one my grandmother was close friends with, and the first one was another Nellie he married after his first wife Nellie died. But I will ask my Dad, just to be sure. Jack, Thanks for taking the time to give everyone the correct phone number for the DC Archives. I would have continued to give out the phone number listed in Provine's book for goodness knows how long! Hi Sue, Now I'm curious if the William S. Freeman you refer to was the son of Thomas Stouton Freeman and Anne Myrtle Burroughs Freeman and brother of Mamie and Annie May Freeman. Anne Myrtle was sister to my grandmother Jennie Maude Burroughs Higgs. If so, do you know when they died and where they are buried -- particularly Anne Myrtle? Hi Joyce, If you are researching FREEMAN, I am curious to know if there is any connection between Louis and Caroline to a William S. Freeman and his wife Nellie. They were next-door neighbors and very close friends to my grandmother's family in the late 19-teens in Mt. Rainier. Hi everyone! Wondering if there is a way to find a marriage if I only have the bride's name. This gal shows up as 8 years old in 1880 so I'm guessing she married in the late 1890's or early 1900's or so. Where could I go to find this marriage? Thanks so very much and happy holidays to a great bunch of folks on this list! Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Wills 1920 to 1950's. Could you help me? I need the numbers to get the wills of Louis Freeman and his wife,Caroline Freeman. They were alive on 1920 census. He was a portrait painter and they never left DC. Both died in DC but when I don't know. Since both were born in the 1870's,so I assume it was before 1950. THey ask $18 per death certficate and don't give rebates if they don't find one. Without a date , it's too costly. Thank you, Joyce Oshrin in New Jersey
Thanks Jack - It has been a while since I have worked with them and was afraid the number might have change. Everyone make note!! -Amy
