Please bear with me, I'm posting to multiple lists as my THRIFT folks intermarried several times into these families. Many moved to Washington DC. I've added pictures, partial cemetery transcriptions and another descendant file for John THRIFT, father of Keturah Ann THRIFT who married Jeremiah S LEWIS. Check out the following web site: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/h/i/Susan-Whittington-Maryland/ Thanks, Sue
Amy, I have spoken with the guy who is or at least was running the DC Archive (if he hasn't been replaced). The issue, and I agree with him is that he receives little or no funding or assistance. The times I have been there, he was the only guy working. They reduced the budget and took staff. I also spoke with the man who is running the vital statistics bureau, he appears to have a beef with the archive. You know how they just make a copy of something and send it back. (at least when they get a chance). Well, he wants the archive to charge $18.00 or more per certified copy. Most of us don't need a certified copy, just a copy! He didn't understand that. He also wants the archive to charge $30.00 per hour for checking in addition to the copy. His feeling is that they must be self supporting and bring in revenue. I truly understand the guy at the archive's frustration, with no help you can do little or nothing. Hope you understand better. Trish
If SKS has a Stones & Bones I would appreciate a look up for Jacob Luskey Emily Luskey Thanks in advance Earlene jasper@olg.com

By 1850, Alexandria County was no longer part of DC but had been retroceded to Virginia. Tim D. Hello, Reading over the 1850 DC census online - Alexandria County trying to find a location of King Street - between Fayette and Henry St. I want to view the names on all persons living on that street. I do not know who I am looking for, only familiarity. I have the online census availability, however there are 125 images. Would someone direct me as to what page or area this would be and I can take it from there. The first image starts with "East of Washington St @ D.C. Thanks.
There is a Grace United Methodist but it is located in Silver Spring/Tacoma Park Maryland. My grandmother was very active there. If you want their address let me know. I have a church book that was put out in the 50's. This church is still there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "jane donovan" <donovangj@erols.com> To: <WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2002 6:47 PM Subject: [WashingtonDC'' ] Grace MEC > If it's Grace ME Church, that's Methodist, not Episcopal. If it's Grace ME Church, that's Methodist, not Episcopal. I don't know of a Grace United Methodist in DC. You might try the regional archives at Lovely Lane Museum in Baltimore. They would have the records of any closed churches. 410-889-4458. Jane Donovan
Information is requested concerning availability of marriage and divorce records for individuals that have lived in Washington, DC. While I have the specific names of both parties, the exact dates for the marriage and divorce are unknown. Would like to know if the personnel in such a Washington, DC depository for such vital records would do a quick search. Herb Cunningham
According to "Guide to the Records of your DC Ancestors," Grace Episcopal Church was established in 1851 and a church erected at the corner of D and Ninth Streets, S.W. The church was closed in 1957 and its extant records transferred to the Washington Cathedral, Mount St. Alban, Washington DC, 20016. Phone 537-6200. There is a fee charged for research by personnel at the Cathedral, or you can make an appointment to come and research the records yourself. Hi Everyone: Hope you have had some great holidays. I've only gained about 8 pounds. Anyhow, I plan on updating my memories page tomorrow but I must tell you that I received a new memory and the nice person who submitted the memory stated that she had found the link from the Western High School/Duke Ellington school site! I must say I was excited to find this out. Somebody out there sent the link to them. Thank you. Now, go visit their site especially if you attended the school The url is: http://www.his.com/~weaa/tblcntns.htm Take care all.... Debi P.S. For those of you new to the list I have a site with DC memories. If you would like to visit the url is: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4759 - Also if you want to submit a memory do so soon as I don't have quite the time I used to to update the pages.
Hi list and Happy New Year to you all, If anyone is going to the DC Archieves, I would appreciate it if you would look up and copy the death certificates for the following people: 159,724 John W. Murry 199,029 George Murray 200,257 Ruth E. Murray 202,261 George Murray 210,398 Richard Murray 221,512 Geo Murray I will be glad to reimburse for any costs involved in copying and sending. Thanks, Eileen
Thank you everyone for your help ! I wish I had a street addy for my family back in the 1880's. I will be interested in finding a directory for those years as well. I do not believe the George W Taylor buried in Brookfield ,is the correct George because he would have been too young to be in the Civil War . The dates you sent me were 1858-1934. I am reasonably sure my George died in approx 1920. I do not have a firm date. I keep hoping that one of the ladies who visited my Aunt Virginia Pauline Mead in 1974, or else one of their children, will see my search and give me some guidance. In 1974 ,3 of the children of Lillian Taylor's sisters met in Brooklyn , Pa. I remember one was from Idaho. I do not remember their last names . I was not thinking in terms of it being a historical occasion or the last time I would ever get to meet them so I did not pay much attention to their conversation. Too bad another wasted opportunity. Linda
There is now a Rootsweb list specifically for City Directories, a very busy one. People request others to do lookups, and it seems to me that most get results. I see many asking for DC lookups, and they do go back to mid-19th c in the District. Jan Hall
Julie I accessed the web site for the Washingtoniana Division of the Martin Luther King Library in downtown Washington, DC, at www.dclibrary.org/washingtoniana I then clicked on the collection overview link, scrolled down, and found the following: Directories Various directories are housed in the division, including the city directories from 1822 to 1973, real estate assessment directories from 1886 to present, telephone directories from 1907 to present. The web site mentioned above gives the address and telephone number for the Washingtoniana Division. Here's the information I have about the Archivist. Perhaps she can be of some help. Faye P. Haskins Archivist, Washingtoniana Division email address: fhaskins@capaccess.org Hope this helps. Barbara
Does anyone know how far back the Washington DC street directories go? I need to find out if my great grandparents, JULES LIX and MARIE COUDIERE (LIX), lived in DC between 1872 and 1890. Thanks! Julie Pilon
Linda The CD "Stones and Bones, Cemetery Records of Prince George's County, Maryland", shows a George W. Taylor, b. 1858, d. 1934, buried in the Brookfield United Methodist Church Cemtery, located corner of Route 382, Croom Road, and Candy Hill Road, Naylor, Maryland. There is also a Rebecca Taylor (No dates), buried in Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemterery, St. Mary's Parish, located on Main Street, Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Since Prince George's County borders Washington, DC, I thought I'd send this information along in case they were connected to your Lillian. I wrote the the DC Archives and obtained the marriage license for my great grandparents about a year ago. They were married in 1872. At that time I received a prompt response to the several different requests for information I sent them. I understand, from postings to the list, that people have recently had problems obtaining requested information. Here's their address if you want to try: Archives and Records Center 1300 Naylor Court, NW Washington, DC 20001-4225 Good luck in your search. Barbara
Hello, List-- New Year's Day seems like a good time to post my on-going inquiry...I'm searching for present day descendants of Mrs. Mary A. Collins, 523-10th Street NW, Washington, DC (near Ford's Theater). She was living there in 1875, and the 1880 U.S. Census shows at that address: COLLINS, John Mary A. (wife) Clara (dau) Thomas (son) Ellen (dau) Mary B. (dau) Is anyone researching this line, or does anyone know of any present-day descendants of this family?
