Hi list, The National Archives has microfilms of the enumeration districts for various years of the census. These are descriptions of the boundries of each ED so you really need a map to help find specific addresses. They also have a microfich finding aid for the 1910 census that lets you look up exact addresses and will give you the ED that you need. -Bryan- -----Original Message----- From: Betty McHale [SMTP:b.mchale@worldnet.att.net] Sent: Monday, January 14, 2002 1:42 PM To: WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Census Records on Ancestry.com Isn't there a record somewhere that records the different ED's in DC in specific years of the census. Looking for family of Edward Joseph Gallagher Jr. who was a DC police officer. Married to a Helen Marie Klotz 1911. He died in Silver Springs MD in 1965. They had a daughter Helen Lorraine Gallagher 1933 who married a Hayes T. Evans. They also had a son Bernard Gallagher 1936 who married Mildred Dovan.
Thank you all for your responses to my posting. There were some good suggestions but it sounds like there is no "easy" answer. I wonder how long it will take Ancestry.com to do the index..... Meanwhile, I've started looking page by page reading the entire 1900 census. Who was researching Mattingly? I know someone was but can't remember who. I saw a listing for a Rebecca Mattingly b. Jan. 1860 living with 4 daughters & 2 sons and some boarders on Brightwood Ave., ED #4, Image 44 of 61. If you don't have access to Ancestry.com and you are interested in the listing, email me privately and I will send you the details. Sue, Until they are done indexing all of the census images, the only really easy way to go about it is to have the ED, Township etc. Indexing is something they are in the process of doing. In the meantime you are pretty much going about it the right way. You may want to try using MapQuest at http://www.mapquest.com to help you with the boardering streets and avenues etc. Unless you have access to a map for the years you are searching that will give you the correct ED's. Margy, Your idea sounds like a good one. Also, suggest trying to determine whether the subject address is NE, NW, SE or SW. I have searched the 1910 and 1920 Census for DC in Ancestry and have found the ED descriptions sorely lacking, which results in some really painful searching. Bob Sistek
What helped me was to go to yahoo and use their map. Typed in the address I was looking for, zoomed in close and noted the surrounding streets to get a better idea. Not a perfect solution, but it did help. Bonus was that I got a better feel for how the city is laid out. Also when you find them in one year write down the ED description given for help in the next. They don't match exactly from year to year but anything that narrows it down helps. I recently signed up for a year of Ancestry.com with access to the census records. Now that my daughter has returned to college, I have some time to use it and I am trying to learn my way around it. I find that only some of the census years are indexed, and for the others you need to know the enumeration district number and then browse until you find the family you want. If I have an address, how do I go about figuring out which enumeration district it was in? The descriptions they have for the districts are confusing -- i.e. I have an address on NY Ave but there are descriptions for about 4 different districts that say "NY Ave" in them. I would hope there would be an easier and less time consuming way to go about this. Does anyone have any suggestions? Sue Dotson Buzzybee@prodigy.net

Debi, I have learned that how good a list is depends a great deal on how enthused and involved the list owner is. Personally, I think this list suffered terribly when you left, and I've really missed you. This is GREAT news for us! I'm thrilled that you are back! Hi, Is anyone one familar with Western Burial Ground? Who would have their records? I found it listed at the DC Genweb page under books. Holmead's Cemetery (Western Burial Ground), Washington, D.C. I just received papers from NARA for the estate of my ancestor Joseph Brumley who died in D.C on July 12, 1823. The papers list the funeral expenses and on the top is written that his was buried in West. Burial Grounds. Thanks, Margy

I think that nothing beats a try but a failure...all we can do is ask. Trish
Earlene I checked my Stones and Bones CD and found no mention of either Jacob or Emily Luskey. Barbara
Just wondered if anyone has seen Thomas Kingston on a census after his mdg. in 1817 to Susan Hodgkins of alexandria City or D.C. areas? I have found them as a couple. or even any further record of them. thanks, Sue
Would anyone have access to the DC Census for 1900? I hope there is such a thing! I'm looking for Martha Maguire (wife of Thomas Maguire, deceased in 1899), Frederick L. Maguire and an Addie E. Maguire. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for any help! Best regards, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Would the D.C. Archives office allow a genealogical volunteer find and copy the wills that have been requested? Maybe get the old requests caught up and then answer new inquiries on a quarterly basis -- (this is easy to suggest when I live too far away to do it!) Sue Cram Washington (State)
