Does anyone know where I could find information on the old Columbia Theater that was located on F Street, NW in Washington? I understand my great-grandfather built new stage sets there each week for traveling vaudeville shows when he was young. When his son, my grandfather, was a boy, he would run out on the stage of the Columbia Theater between acts with a large card to announce who would be on stage next. This would have been in the late 1890's, I guess. Thanks, Carolyn
Elizabeth For your first question, people living at the same address, could it be a boarding house? There were lots of them in DC in those days. If you see more than two or three people with different last names, that is a clue. In later census years, "boards" was added after the names at times. For your second question, if you find this person on the census, it will note if he was illiterate (after 1850). Some of my ancestors could sign their names and did on some documents, yet on later ones they made their marks. I was told that impatient clerks didn't want to wait for a perhaps painfully-written signature and filled it in themselves and asked for the "mark" as proof the man was there when he, the clerk, wrote it out in his superior penmanship. If the document is a will, the signer might have been too ill to write but could manage to do an "X". JHall
I am researching the BOWNE family I have info from the census I would like pictures and a small bio on ea thanks Audrey Bowne Seattle gregbowne@earthlink.net I will help with the Seattle area
Hi, Elizabeth-- That's generally the case... I have one gr-grandfather who could not read or write (confirmed on the 1900 Census just before he died in 1902). On his naturalization papers his signature is noted as "X--his mark". Interesting to note that both of the witnesses to this 1884 document signed in the same manner: "X--his mark", "X--his mark". Another gr-grandfather, naturalized 5 years earlier, also in San Francisco, signed his full name, as did both of his sponsors. The 1900 Census confirmed in this case that all were able to read and write English. Hope this helps. If someone has "X" his mark noted on a document like a land deed, would that indicate that he could not read or write? I know this is a very basic question, but I've never posed the question and don't recall it being a topic. Thanks, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
If I have two folks with the same "address" in the 1850 and 1853 DC City Directories, would that mean they lived near each other or in the same dwelling? Since there are no "numbers" in the address...an example would be something like s or n and 14 or 15 1/2, would would the group think? I'm curious to know. Thanks for your input! Best regards, Elizabeth Culhane

Hi, Would anyone have access to a City Directory for Washington, DC in 1948? I have found a couple of postcards addressed to a "Mr. H. W. Maguire" at 1760 Kenyon Street, NW, Washington, DC" from 1948. My great aunt, Martina M. Mattingly, owned the house there, I believe, and died at that address in 1954. Since I have "Maguire's" on both sides of my family and I'm unfamiliar with this "Mr. H. W. Maguire", I'm wondering if someone might have a directory for 1948 to see what the "H. W." might have stood for. Thanks ever so much! Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Hello, I am new to the list and this is my first posting. I have many families associated with D.C. and should have joined before now - hope you will be able to help "catch me up" and I will be able to add to your family trees. These are my main D.C. connections - DEVINE/DIVINE Cadirsis Nolan (or C.N) DEVINE b. abt. 1851 Loudoun Co. VA w.- Anne Eliza (ALEXANDER) b. 1860 Frederick Co. MD children - Blanche H. Devine - b. 1880 (married 1st to someone named WILCOX then to Louis BERGMAN - their son was Armond Francis Bergman - she was then married to someone named MARSHALL) Lena Leota Devine - b. 1882 (1st married to someone named STRANAHAN? then married to Hubert L. KING) Keefer Young Devine - b. 1887 (married to Catherine SMITH) Nettie Mae Devine - b. 1889 (married to Lawrence McINTEER - their son was Hubert) Mary Devine - b. 1890 Manda Rex Devine - b. 1893 (possibly known as Maude and married to Harold KELLOGG) Carrie W. Devine - b. 1884 another family member who resided in D.C. was Aaron DIVINE (b. 1784 VA) brother of C.N. Devine's grandfather. SMITH James C. SMITH - b. 1859 in Ohio w. - Louise (SPIESS) b. 1867 in D.C. children - Adaliade K. Smith - b. 1887 Helen Mary Smith - b. 1888 (married Keefer Y. DEVINE) Catherine L. Smith - b. 1892 Albert J. Smith - b. 1894 (married Hazel RAY) SPIESS Emile SPIESS - b. abt. 1829 Germany w. Wilhelmina (DREAKA) b. abt. 1836 Germany children - Louis A. Spiess - b. 1854 (married Margaret REAGAN) Dora Spiess - b. 1860 Charles Spiess - b. abt. 1863 Louise Spiess - b. 1859 (married James C. SMITH) ALEXANDER George W. ALEXANDER - b. 1832/36 MD w. Henrietta C. (YOUNG) - b. 1829 Frederick Co. MD children - Ella Henrietta Alexander - b. 1858 Ann E. Alexander - b. 1860 (married to Cadirsis Nolan DEVINE) May McClellan Young Alexander - b. 1862 (married to James W. HERBERT) One last small connection to D.C. was with the family of Hiram GRUBB b. 1825 VA - w. Catharine (HURDLE), children Anne, John M.& Mary. I think that he died during the Civil War of wounds (in 1862) so they would have probably only spent 10 years in D.C. as a family. Please let me know if any of the names are familiar to you or if any of you would be kind enough to check reference materials that you own to offer any additional information on the families. Thank you for any help or advice that you are able to offer, Susan McIntyre

Hi, everyone! Found these two folks on separate baptismal records for my Mattingly group in DC in the 1860's. Apparently, they were baptismal sponsors for my relatives back at St. Aloyisous in DC. Is anyone familiar with Dr. Martin Van Buren Bogan or a Virginia Timms? The other gal mentioned was a Maria Mattingly and I'm uncertain if that sponsor may have indeed been the six year old sister of one of my relatives. Seems kind of young. Thanks ever so much for any help. Best regards, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
01-25-02 @ 2020 EST Good Evening! As a new subscriber to the list, and having reviewed this list's archives from previous years regarding the subject topic, I am interested in knowing if any library or historical society might have a complete list of the fatalities and injured of that tragic evening? My wife's would-have-been uncle was one of the fatalities of that evening and we are attempting to trace that branch of the family. Thank you for any and all responses. Carl C. Upstate NY
Is there anyone on this list who subscribes to Ancestry.com who would be willing to do one lookup for me? Thanks. Jane Donovan
Correction: Montgomery County, Maryland, does not abut Pennsylvania. There is a Montgomery County, PA, but it is well to the east (Philadelphia) Shirley (I live on the border of PA/MD - Frederick County, MD comes before Montgomery). ----- Original Message ----- From: <WashingtonDC-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <WashingtonDC-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 4:02 AM Subject: WashingtonDC-D Digest V02 #19
I don't recall if anyone on the list is searching Ward, but I'll share this just in case. My mother has a book "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come" which was given to her by her great aunt, Mary E. Bailey of DC. Inscribed in the book is "A gift to Mary E. Bailey from Laura Ward." Then someone wrote--Laura Ward died March 19, 1909. We have no idea who Laura Ward was. Hope it helps someone.
