I was born and raised in DC...I don't recall Glen-Ellen (I would have as my name is Ellen)...Glen Echo is in the area you describe..could be that. Ellen
Although this is a bit far afield - there is a Glen Ellen in Baltimore Co., Maryland. It is an old estate dating back to the early 1800's if not before. Jane Larish

Glen Echo was a place where all of us went to when we were kids-It was an amustment park which you wrote about. The Capital Transit Company ran it and lots of fun times were had by all. My Dad was born, raised, and lived in DC all his life. He says he doesn't recognize the name "Glen Ellen" but that Glen Echo isn't far from Georgetown. It was an amusement park from the time Dad can remember. However, the area was also called Glen Echo and has houses, etc. as well as the park. I don't know if this helps. Hi list, The National Archives in DC (and all of the branches) have these WWI draft registration cards on mic rofilm. This is a really great resource that few people seem to know about. You do need to know where the person lived in 1917/1918 but otherwise it's pretty easy to use these films. One of the best things about the draft registration cards is that they give some information about the men's height, build, and eye and hair color, which is not something that one can generally find in other sources. They also list next of kin and often a place of work. I found both of my grandfathers and all of my great uncles cards in a few hours one day down at the Archives. -Bryan-
Hi List, In the memory book from my grandmother's funeral of 11 Oct 1974, one of the attendee's signed their name Ella M. HURLEY, and gave the address 4208 Yuma St., NW, 20016. My grandmother was Ella Elizabeth DONEGAN and her parents were John Dominic DONEGAN and Mary Ellen HURLEY. Because her maternal line was HURLEY, I feel certain that the funeral attendee was a relative - just don't know how! I tried a white pages search, but no one in D. C. or the surrounding areas has the same name/address. Does this Ella Hurley ring a beel or appear in anyone's data? Thanks! I went to this cemetery and was treated very good. I was looking for my husband's grandmother. Since the Jane Adams that they had interned at Ft. Lincoln was not mine....they suggested and gave me the information on all the cemeteries in the area. FYI: I have been trying to get a Marriage Certificate for over a year in DC and have sent two different money orders because they don't accept checks. They don't seem to care about anything. It took me over a year for a Death Certificate and they sent two of them--the people that work at these places and cemeteries too don't seem to care and even when you sent them money they don't seem too care. I am glad that I did all my research during the early 70's. Thank God there are folks out there that are willing to help.Kerry ----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Dotson <buzzybee@prodigy.net> To: <WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 18, 2002 10:56 AM Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Fort Lincoln Cemetery > They are NOT. I had accessed a database a year and a half ago for WWI Draft list at www.genexchange.org. I just went to the site and it's evidently down temporarily. I found information about my grandfather, Charles Joseph Bailey of DC and his brother. I have another address for a WWI database. It also is two years old and I don't recall if I ever found anything there or not, and I was not successful when I tried to access it a miinute ago. But for what it's worth it was //userdb.rootsweb.com/ww1/draft. Good luck... Bonnie in OKC Researching: DC-Bailey, Viehmann, Cross; VA-Cross, Feaster
This is on one of my "to do" lists - http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/w1draft.html from what I have been told it is best to know a specific address where they might have lived in 1917/18. They are NOT. They will only give you information on one or two names at a time, and only then if they think you are immediate family. Even then, they are only receptive if they think there is any chance you might be bringing them business any time soon. Depending on your age, I found out it sometimes works to call ahead and tell them you are wanting information on the grave of a grandparent or parent's [relationship (aunt, sister -- something close) & name of deceased] so that when you "plan" to arrive WITH this elderly person, the grandparent or parent won't have so far to walk around to find the grave. That usually works and they treat you better because they think your elderly person might be their future business. Does anyone know if the staff at Fort Lincoln Cemetery is receptive to researchers?? J
Just saw an ad from a paid researcher regarding World War I draft registration cards. According to the ad, 24 million men living in the US (regardless of PLACE of birth) who were born between 13 Sep 1872 & 12 Sep 1900 were required to register. The cards are supposed to contain basics such as full name & address, exact date of birth, citizenship status, and some may even contain exact place of birth (including town in foreign country), nearest relative's name/address, and father's exact place of birth (including town in foreign country). I suspect that these are probably on film at the National Archives...does anyone know for sure?? Frank Dunnigan

Nancy Sheets married Bruce Edward McArtor some time in or about 1960. Does anyone have knowledge of Nancy. She divorced Mr. McArtor about 1964 and later remarried. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Bob McArtor

Hi List, Anna HANCOCK is listed as a Baptismal sponsor for a great-granduncle, William DONEGAN. The baptism was 7 Nov. 1897 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in SW. The other sponsor is Jeremiah ("Jerry") DONEGAN, brother to the baby's father. Since it is common for a relative to be a sponsor, I would love to know how Anna connects. She could be a HURLEY or DONEGNA who m. a HANCOCK or could it be her maiden name? William's parents: John Dominic DONEGAN, b. Feb. 1858 in D. C., and Mary Ellen HURLEY, b. Jul 1858 in Ireland (prob. Co. Cork). William's siblings: Jane ("Jennie") Cecile, b. 13 Oct 1895 in Staten Island, NY; John, b. 2 Oct 1888 in D. C.; Joseph, b. 31 aug 1890 in D. C.; Ella Elizabeth (my grandmother), b. 16 Feb 1893 in D. C.; Mary Elizabeth, b. 18 Apr 1895 in D. C.; and Stephen, b. ? (prob. in NY and prob. just before r afetr Jane. He died young).
