    1. Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Mt Olivet
    2. I wholeheartedly agree with you, Trish. While I don't get to Mount Olivet as much as I would like, I have never had a problem. My husband has quite a few family members buried there. I think it is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the area, and, as another researcher said, the groundskeepers are always helpful. Some of the monuments are awe-inspiring. I venture to say that every area, from the smallest town to the largest city, has experienced crime and vandalism at some time or another. Mount Olivet, unfortunately, was a victim a couple of years ago. However, no one should let fear stop them from visiting our deceased relatives and enjoying the peaceful serenity and beauty of Mount Olivet. 2. I often visit Mt. Olivet Cemetery and have not experienced what you are talking about. Yes, the cemetery has been vandalized, the most recent being almost two years ago. But, almost all cemeteries in the area have a history of vandalism. This will continue as long as people don't visit their loved ones. As long as cemeteries are homes for the dead and not for the living, we run the risk of them being taken over by the those who wish to do harm. But we also do harm by allowing fear to rule our actions. Mt. Olivet is a beautiful cemetery with marvelous artwork among the headstones. It amazes me that these statues are forgotten and therefore lost to those who are alive. Although they are monuments to the dead, they are also monuments for the living. It means that this person was here and not to forget them. Trish

    1. Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Cemetary Questions
    2. You shouldn't have any trouble at Mt. Olivet. I've been there many times and have seen no problems or unsavory characters. The vandalism occurred at night after the cemetery was closed. The cemetery on Wisconsin Ave. near W St. sounds like Holy Rood. That one is locked most of the time. What records that exist are at Georgetown University library. Jack

I have relatives buried in Mt Olivet and I only go with my husband...it's true , it's not safe to go there...over the past few years, Mt Olivet has become a favorite place for local drug dealers and users to frequent..it has also been vandalized several times, breaking some of the old stones...it's a shame and a disgrace...please use caution when you go. 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] 1906 Records created when a person disappears ??
    2. Dear Listers, . Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of what documents one would have had to file in 1906 in DC to be declared a widow? What the waiting period might have been? And what courts would take care of this at that time? My grandfather disappeared and Grandmother in DC thought she was a widow. I have discovered (nearly 100 years later) that she was not, and that he actually went back to England. She is single in the 1920 census. I may be barking up an impossible tree but thought it worth looking into since there seems to be no trace of her death records either. Thanks for any ideas. Betty in AZ Will do Arizona lookups at the courthouse if someone has a need.
