    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Darnall/Curtin family
    2. I am looking for any information and living relatives of Charles E. Darnall (born 1896) or Edna M. (possibly Mae) Darnall (born about1893) who married James E. Curtin (born about 1893). They had three children by 1920: Mary H, Sarah A, and James E. According to the 1920 census they were living on Banning Road. Brother-in-law Charles E. Darnall was staying with them. 3. Does anybody have any information about: 1. Munsey Trust Company 2. Judge Alexander F. Mathews 3. Enoch or Notely Moreland I'm doing research on my house and apparently the land on which my house was built was originally owned by the Moreland, then sold to Judge Matthews, then to Munsey Trust Company, which did some development work in this area in the early part of the 20th century. Many thanks. Jane Donovan donovangj@erols.com

    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Names of D.C. Music Students & Performers - early 1900s
    2. Dick&SherrySimpson
    3. I have just come into possession of a memory book kept by my great-aunt Mabel FINCH RAWLINGS (Mrs. Jesse W.) between 1908 and about 1933. It contains notes and programs, even newspaper articles about concerts she gave and her piano accompaniment of singers, particularly a Franceska KASPAR LAWSON, at locations in D.C. and in several mid-Atlantic states. Many performers are listed. Most are female. One concert at the Willard Hotel in 1921 mentions O'DEA, GARRETT, MILLHAM, HALL, BROOKS, KRANTZ, Grace FINNEY, RICKETT, KASPAR, ROYLE, and MINOVICH AND "Mrs. HENDLEY." A "Musicale" at the Sidwells' Friends School at 1811 I Street lists: KASPAR, MINOVICH, WESTBROOK, KOONIN, BRIGHTENBURG, COWSILL. The book also lists attendees at reunions held for the MacREYNOLDS-KOEHLE Music School (1410 N Street N.W. in D.C.) Names listed in 1918 include: Helen FARRINGTON, Lewis FLEMER, Mrs. Martin MORRISON, Elsa RANER (violinist), Florence MacDOWELL, Augusta BERGMAN, Martha LINDENKOHL, Emmanuel CHAFFIOT, Frances SISSON, Dorothy DARE, Ingrid WESTESSON, Beatrice WILSON, Charlotte HARDING, Elizabeth HAYNES, Mrs. Coburn VAIL, Rebecca ROSE, Helen NASH. If you believe your D.C. area ancestor may have been trained in music, send me the name, and I will search through this little book for any mention of him/her. Sherry Simpson

    3. Hi, Susan-- Check the National Law Enforcement Officers' Memorial. Here's what I found at www.nleomf.com --The panel location indicates the placement of his name on the memorial wall at Judiciary Square in DC. WILLIE R GAWEN Officer Metropolitan, Washington D.C., P.D. Washington, DC Date of Death: 03/02/1915 Panel 34, E -9 I believe that MPD files on DC police can be obtained through the National Archives. My cousin obtained the complete personnel file of his great-grandfather, who was killed in the line of duty in 1918. Hope this helps! 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] A Gen Poem for Mother's Day
    2. sarah rose
    3. This is my gift to all of you for Mothers Day. My poetry has been published in 44 states (so far) and in the UK and Canada. This is one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it. Sarah MY ANCESTOR GRAND MOTHER I search for you yet do not even know your name I press on praying my efforts will prove fruitful the records do not list you or the other women who have lived and loved and laughed, gave birth, and died, the records perpetrate the myth that you were never here but I stand whole and bare my soul and vow to find you as I live I search for you in old records, in churches, at the Embassy, in small dimly lit rooms in the back of obscure libraries and archives and pour over barely readable handwritten ledgers with magnifying glass and flashlight I live on mainly toast these days there isn't time for meals or much sleep feeling as I always do, on the very brink of discovery Perhaps THIS will be the day I find the one seemingly insignificant clue, which will lead me to you although I did not find you listed in the Census Records I am not deterred, you may turn up yet, on an Immigration or Naturalization list somewhere perhaps, or maybe tucked away inside some bank of vital statistics, long forgotten like so many others, your name having become lost over the long years Your name could be lying even now amidst the millions of documents stored and locked away safeguarded in the bowels of a giant warehouse all stopped up from apathetic crowds who have long ceased their visits your precious name, lying just inside a myriad of records packed in tight, packed in to stay never guessing I would come @Sarah Elizabeth Rose

    3. Hey, gang, I know this is a little off-topic, but I figure some of you are probably interested in NY history & genealogy as well as DC. Plus these folks published one of my books, so I like to give them a plug. Heart of the Lakes Publishing in Interlaken NY has just opened a website. They publish mostly local history, especially having to do with NY State. Feel free to pass the website address along to others who are researching in that area. www.hlpbooks.com Jane Donovan donovangj@erols.com

    2. Frank Dunnigan
    3. Here's a comment on that subject from March 18th. Another lister respond the next day that the cards were on film in Room 400 at the National Archives. Frank Dunnigan Hi list, The National Archives in DC (and all of the branches) have these WWI draft registration cards on microfilm. This is a really great resource that few people seem to know about. You do need to know where the person lived in 1917/1918 but otherwise it's pretty easy to use these films. One of the best things about the draft registration cards is that they give some information about the men's height, build, and eye and hair color, which is not something that one can generally find in other sources. They also list next of kin and often a place of work. I found both of my grandfathers and all of my great uncles cards in a few hours one day down at the Archives. -Bryan- -----Original Message----- From: brizz444@aol.com <brizz444@aol.com> To: WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com <WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, May 06, 2002 11:49 AM Subject: [WashingtonDC'' ] WWI Registration >Hi List, > >I can't seem to get my bearings on where to get info on individuals in the DC >area who registered for WWI. >Anyone have a clue? 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] DC May Ball- Newspaper article
    2. Huening
    3. Hi all, I wanted to show you this Newspaper article that I received when looking for information on an ancestor. I thought someone might recognize their ancestors name. My ancestors in this article are Kate Seitz and Josephine Plant. I was also wondering if anyone knew anything about Marini's dancing acadamy since it was around for quite some time. Lisa > The Rambler does not know when Marini came to Washington, but he knows that > there was a great May ball at Temperance Hall on May 9, 1865, and he knows > that there had been many Marini May balls before that date. But at the > particular May ball Kate Seitz was the goddess of Liberty, Jennie Montgomery > was Queen of May and her maids of honor were Sallie Duncan, Lilly Bruf, Hebe > Barney and Mary Morgan, while the crown bearer was Josephine Plant. > > "Marini was one of those old dancing masteres who taught the art of dancing > to thousands of children, many of whom now have gray hair or bald heads." He > evidently taught the children of the elite of the city at his dancing > academy. He held at least 17 May balls from 1859 to 1876. >
