    3. Deborah, I looked at the tree that P.I. Fox posted. On the index there was a Margaret Grayson Galt, b. 1865 so I looked at her. These were her parents: Father: Sterling M GALT b: 23 Nov 1796 in Carrol Co, Md Mother: Margaret GRAYSON b: 17 Nov 1798 It doesn't say where the mother was born, but perhaps somehow this Margaret Grayson was connected to the William Grayson for which Grayson county was named???? Intriguing, anyway. Funny how it's not enough that we do our own lines, but we become interested in others too :-) Sue Dotson Buzzybee@prodigy.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Jaquiss" <djaquiss@pressroom.com> To: <WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 03, 2002 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Carroll Grayson Galt > Dear Sue, > > Thank you for an interesting history/geography lesson and I for one can > always use one, but when were the counties formed and in whose honor were > they named? 3. Deborah, Grayson County, VA was formed in 1792 from part of Wythe County and was named for William Grayson, one of Virginia's first two U.S. Senator's. Carroll County cut off from Grayson in 1842. I'm not as familiar with Carroll Co. history and do not know how that county was named. I'm not quite sure I understand your question, but if I'm following you correctly, I think it's possible that a person could have been name for a person OR a place, or both. In this case, Carroll Grayson Galt wasn't b. until 1889, and was b. in DC. Time-wise, it is quite far removed from the formation of Carroll and Grayson counties. Considering he was b. in DC, it would make sense to me that perhaps the parents might have been fond of their country home and would have named a child for the place they loved. (It IS beautiful, mountainous country.) Also, looking at the tree submission on the Internet for him, there was also a child in the family -- or it might have been his parent's family, I can't remember for sure now -- but the child was named Augusta, which as I had mentioned previously is the county where Woodrow Wilson was from. 3. Pam, I went out to look for you the entry you asked about and it appears to be UN which I would take to mean unavailable. My guess is that the 80+ year old mother was answering the questions and did not know the answer when asked about the dwelling. As far as I know there were only two entries to be made in Column 7 and that was "R" or "O". Harry > I was very excited to find my ancestor MADELINE S. PHILLIPS and her > daughter ETHEL N. 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] question on "Home Data", 1930 census please
    2. I was very excited to find my ancestor MADELINE S. PHILLIPS and her daughter ETHEL N. PHILLIPS in the 1930 D.C. census on page 12, enumeration Dist. 300, sheet 12-A, thanks to a genealogy friend. However, there is one entry that I can't figure out. In the column #s 7 & 8 each person is asked "Home owned or rented" and "Value of home". All the replies are either "R" for rent or "O" for own. My ancestor's entry is completely different. I can't really decipher what it is but it may be "Um", "Nu" or something similar in appearance. Has anyone found a different entry for their ancestor in these columns? Can anyone venture a guess as to what the symbol could represent? What other options were represented? How might I find out what all the options were? Thanks for any help in solving this puzzle. Pam

    3. Donna, My husband is betting that Carroll Grayson Galt's parents/family was from the Galax, VA area. Galax is half in Carroll Co., VA and half in Grayson Co., VA. Add to that the fact that Woodrow W. Wilson was from Staunton, VA (Augusta Co.). We could be wrong -- but it might give you something to check out, anyway. I'd like to find out if there was a story written about his death, since he was only 27 and from a well-known family. I'm interested in anything about him, personally. I've held this image of a tragic figure, and am hoping to learn he had his moments of joy. > > Thanks for your help if anyone knows anything about this young man. > > God Bless You!
