    1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Marriage Record, DC Archives Address
    2. GMBy
    3. Ruth, if it's not too much trouble would you mind checking at the DC Archives to see if there is a marriage record for Cornelius J. Eldridge and (Birdie) Elizabeth Shannon, 14 June 1930. We have looked everywhere else but DC for a record. Her parents, Clifton and Cassandra Embrey Shannon, lived at 3495 Holmead Place, NW in 1923, and at 1307 Quincy St., NW when Mrs. Shannon died in 1933. I will reimburse you for expenses. Thank you, GMBy ----- Original Message ----- From: The Fleaks To: WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, July 27, 2002 8:05 PM Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] DC Archives Address Hello list, Glad to see the activity has picked up after a long dry spell. I have been to the DC Archives and found microfilm indexes for death certificates which I could then look up and copy (for free), books for marriages, births as well as wills. When I was there they had a few of the Provine and Pippenger books also. It was run by the Blackistone family from St. Mary's Co., MD. >> Virginia Cross, dau. of Guy & May Cross of Indian Head and Hughsville, MD, married into the Blackistone family. My mother has an article, probably from a DC paper, about Mr. Blackistone when he died. I can get the article next time I visit her in about a week. He sounded like an interesting man. 2. Carol Baldi
    3. Hello, Lela Hollabaugh referred to receiving a record from DC Archives without charge. Lela, would you please let us know the exact address you used to accomplish this? Several times , in the past I have received death records without charge. Lately I wrote for another one and was sent a form to fill out and told there was a charge which must be prepaid. I'm not sure I used the same address this last time, so would like to know the exact address. Thank you, Carol B.

    2. I think the key is quantity. I've never order more than 2 or 3 documents per request and have gotten a fairly expedited response. If you request more than three you'll probably end up in the "to do" pile. Then if you need more names, space the request out by a few months and request three more. I think people get greedy and request too many at once. > I wrote the D.C. Archives on July 2 requesting a copy of a will--supplied them > with name of deceased, year of death, and Box number. 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] 1922 DC Panoramic Map
    2. GMBy
    3. Have you'll been to the Library of Congress panoramic maps site? These are hand-drawn maps showing the buildings in the city and the streets are named. You can download a Mr. Sids Adapter for free, download and save as many maps as you want, and the Mr. Sids viewer enables you to enlarge any section for printing out or viewing. You have to register with the viewer manufacturer, but that is no problem, and they never sold my address to anyone. I have about 10 DC maps going way, way back to when there was a canal on the mall. The 1922 one shows all the hotels. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/pmhtml/panmap.html Best wishes, GMBy

    3. You can add incompetent to that list. Do not order a will. You will never get it. It is a waste of time. I have two certificates of research for two death certificates that they could not find. I lost $24 on those. They are there. This would be a very lucrative business for someone that would be willing to take the time to retrieve these documents for people that are unable to research themselves. I am willing to pay and I think many others would do the same. 3. If they'd only elect Carol Schwartz for Mayor, things might improve. The last fifteen years of bad Mayors has not helped that city. 1. [WashingtonDC'' ] Acess to DC records
    2. I suggests that list users write to Eleanor Holmes Norton who is the DC representative in Congress and to Mayor Anthony Williams with their stories. I further suggest that in your communication you point out the revenue the City gets from those searching their roots. When combined with the National Records stored there it is considerable. I would also cc a copy to your own representative and to members of the House Sub committee that oversees Washington, DC. Their records search charges and copy cost are the highest I have ever experienced. I have never been to the DC Archives but am told by those who have, it is located in a very bad neighborhood. Space is limited and they wish you to make an advanced appointment. I have called to make appoints and never connected with a person on the phone. For some reason Thursday seems to be a magic day to call. AS a native Washingtonian who used to work at the main branch of the DC Library when it was on K. Street, I was appalled when I went to an event at the MLK Wasingtoniana Room a few months ago and found so few books on the shelf containing DC information. In the past few years Wesley Peppinger, CG has been compiling DC records as fast as he can. Most have been published by Willow Bend Books in Westminster, MD. The MLK had none of them and when queried as to why, I was told no money. Not only MLK but every branch library should have a full set of published records. This is our nation's capital and it should be a model for record keeping and goods and services. I hope some of you will take the time to write. After all genealogy has become a national obsession and documentation is a vital part. Both Mayor Williams and Delegate Norton have made t.v. commercials promoting DC tourism since 9/11 so point out to them the obvious, genealogy brings in $$$. Margaret Amundson, CG

She is listed first, and then her daughter "Helen Reintzel" age 9, then several other families with HOHs (all widows) in the same home. As many of you know I am researching Reintzel, and it blows my mind to find this Helen with a parent by a different name.
