An ancestor of mine, William BEACH, drowned in 1857. I'd like to find out more about this but don't know where to look. Since this was probably an accidental death there may have been an item in a newspaper or a police report. Are there any records available? Any help greatly appreciated. Looks like Steve Morse has done it again. I just visited his Ellis Island Jewish-Passenger website and discovered that he has incorporated the ability to sort the text version of the manifest by line numbers. The Ellis Island folks used to sort it that way initially (that certainly makes the most sense) but many months ago they made a change and the passengers are now displayed in a random order. For the life of me, I can't understand why they did that. What Steve has done (the work was actually done by a computer genius in Switzerland -- Yves Goulnik) is to intercept the text manifest that the Ellis Island site sends back and re-sort it so that the passengers are in the right order. To see this in action, go to Steve's Jewish-passenger search form: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html and do a search. When you get the results you'll see a link that says "text manifest" and another that says "text manifest (sorted)". Clicking on the first link gives the text manifest that the Ellis Island site created and the second link gives Yves' rearrangement of the manifest. So far this only works if you access the text manifest starting from Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form. But when I asked about that, Steve said that Yves is currently looking into extending that to work with the white (all passenger) search form as well. If you have any questions regarding this new feature, please send your inquiries directly to Steve Morse as I have no expertise or any information about it. Good luck! Diane Jacobs New York
Does any know if the was an agency equivalent to today's Child's Protective Services in Washington during the early 1900's. When my grandmother died in 1909 her two daughters were "given" to two different families. Was there an agency responsible for overseeing the placement of orphaned children? Betty
Ancestry.com has the 1930 census indexed for Washington, DC. For 2620 K Street, NW: try ED 35. That is Downtown, in the Georgetown area. For 904 South Carolina Ave: try ED 128. According to my ADC map that I use, it looks like it should be in there. It is considered Southeast, DC is divided up in sections, that area is the Eastern Market section of town. Hope this helps you, this should put you in the right area. Sharon
Just wanted to thank all those on the list who helped with my BEACH ancestors. Now I need some more advice. My ancestor William BEACH died by drowning in 1857. Since this was what would be considered a violent death would there be a police record of the occurrence. Also are there newspaper archives available for that time period? If either of these are in existence how would I go about getting the records. Most grateful for any help. Can't your Family History Center (FHC) get them for you if they don't already have them? I thought that was something the Latter Day Saints (LDS) (Mormon's) had copies of and they will send the micro film to your nearest FHC for under $5. Try looking at FamilySearch.org and see what a voluminous amount of material they have to offer for history and particularly genealogical research. The site also tells you where and how many FHCs are in every state and country. Hope this helps. Some years after my father died at the new Sibley Hospital I inquired about his records and was told that they only keep records for 10 years. So I got nothing from them. Jack
Betty, Nancy, and list, I, too, am interested in records from Providence Hospital. My gggrandfather died, probably at Providence, at the beginning of the Civil War in DC (abt. October 1861). Have record of medical expenses paid from his estate to Providence. He was a physician living in DC (1860 Census), possibly a contract doctor for the Union troops, as his wife and some of his children were still shown on the 1860 Census at his home in Maryland. (1930 census) ancestry.com indexed the 1930 census for DC (sure wish they had Illinois, but for this list...) Somebody (WPA?) did a street index of 1910 for some large cities, street + address range -> ED, including Washington DC. You can get the film from a NARA branch, or the FHL (Mormon lib) has it in fiche form; if you have a local branch these are cheap & easy to get.

Yes -- go to www.vitalrec.com and click on "States and Territories" then click on any state you want. There will be a chart for the records available for that state, and if you page down there are links to each county for the county records. Is there a central place where the records of all Roman Catholic Baptisms in Wash. DC are recorded, other than the specific Churches. Don't know whether the Archdiocese of Washington would have the records, but they could probably answer your question. Here's their address and telephone number: 5001 Eastern Ave Hyattsville, MD 301-853-4500 Barbara

Most parishes still maintain hand-written ledgers (many going back to pre-Civil War days), and are usually very good at providing information over the phone or filling in the information on a "certificate of baptism" which they will then mail to the requester. The most helpful thing in our family's research has been to see the names of the godparents at each baptism. Invariably, it has been an aunt, uncle, or cousin of the baby. We've managed to confirm several relationships by looking at the names of godparents. In addition, it's been interesting to confirm the baby's FULL first & middle names, along with the spelling of the last name at birth. Within our family, these things sometimes changed over the years. Frank Dunnigan > Is there a central place where the records of all Roman Catholic Baptisms in > Wash. Something else to be considered is the Baltimore Sun which can be viewed on microfilm from the Laws Library (across the street from the Maryland Archives) in Annapolis, MD. Here's the details surrounding the 1931 article for which I'm looking. My grandfather was stabbed in Prince Georges County, MD in 1931. He was taken to a DC hospital where he died. His obituary was listed in the Baltimore Sun. The major newspaper was the Evening Star which >later became the Washington Star. They have the Star beginning in 1852 and >the Post beginning in 1877. Most of my obituaries and articles came from >the Star, but when I couldn't find them in the Star they were usually in >the >Post. They also have the Washington National Intelligencer which often has >obituaries, and the Washington Sunday Weekly (I think that's what its >called) where I've found obituaries that weren't in any of the above >mentioned newspapers. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
In there a central place where the records of all Roman Catholic Baptisms in Wash. DC are recorded, other than the specific Churches. I'm looking for the Baptism of my mother in 1909 and have contact several Churches with no success. There is no record of her birth or her sister's within the Bureau of Vital Statistics. I know positively that they were both born in the city. Betty McHale
