Hi All, My George Seitz came to the US in June of 1837. He was born in Frankfurt Am Main (Hesse) and left from Hamburg on the ship "Hibah". He arrived in NY but stayed on the vessel to his final destination at the Port of Baltimore. I don't know who he lived with prior to his marriage in 1839 but believe it may have been a relative. I don't know of any of his siblings or parents names. He established a Bakery in 1841 in Washington DC and he and his wife Mary Elizabeth Plant (of Montogomery County) had many children. He was in the civil war and later died in 1904. He lived his complete life in DC. I continue to search for descendants and ancestors of this family. I've "rescued" an old photograph of M. Austine SNEAD taken at the Fassett Studio at 925 Penna. Avenue, Washington DC in 1877. The subject appears to be in her 20's or 30's at the time the photo was taken. I'm hoping to find someone from her family so that this lovely old photograph can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Hi Bill, Yes, I too am getting numerous emails with the Bugbear virus attachment, and it's a real pain. Most of the addresses coming in are unfamiliar to me, but one of them was a direct copy off of someone who is on the New River mailing list -- his initials were copied so it looked like it was coming from him, and the email address was his only the server name was changed. He knew nothing about it, and his computer was clean, so it was someone who had copied his user name and address to do it and it went out to everyone on the mailing list. I'm sure the problem is that when we post to the list, our address goes into everyone's computer, and then if they get a virus, we're in there and sitting ducks. I think that's why so many people have quit responding publicly on the lists, and only reply privately. It's a shame, because it undoes the purpose of the lists. I've been tempted at times to unsubscribe from lists, also. What I did was re-evaluate my lists, and looked at the be! nefit I got from them versus the pain of this virus thing. I do have Norton, and it does trap the viruses, it's just a pain to get the warning screen every time one comes in. So what I did was dump all the lists I really wasn't getting that much out of, and kept only a select few important ones. That at least keeps it at a minimum. Actually, I'm convinced the mailing lists are at the bottom of many of my getting so many spam messages, too...... I've noticed that the lists have been real inactive lately which I figured was due to all the virus attacks. I think a lot of people have unsubscribed temporarily. I've thinking of unsubscribing my real email address, and resubscribe using my Yahoo.com email address that way I can just check messages online and not have the virus attempting to rearrange my configurations. I think we can blame Microsoft for much of this. The Mac systems never seem to have these problems. I should have gotten a Mac years ago even though I don't like them. -----Original Message----- From: buzzybee [mailto:buzzybee@prodigy.net] Sent: Thursday, October 10, 2002 11:45 AM To: William Boswell; WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] OT: Frequent Virus Attacks Hi Bill, Yes, I too am getting numerous emails with the Bugbear virus attachment, and it's a real pain. I saw this on another list I'm on and thought I'd pass it along: --------------------------- Obtaining EDs for the 1930 Census (Keyword to: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census) You type in the state, then you type in the city. Del Ray was an 1894 subdivision in what was then Alexandria (after 1920 Arlington) County, Virginia. The southern third of the county, including Del Ray, however, was annexed by the city of Alexandria in 1930. The subdivisions of Del Ray and St. Elmo were incorporated as the town of Potomac in 1908. At the time you are interested in, the early 1900s, Del Ray more narrowly applied to the original subdivision, roughly south of Mt. Ida Avenue, north of East Bellefonte Avenue, east of Commonwealth Avenue, and west of Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1). Today, people refer loosely to Del Ray (for real estate purposes) to pretty much all of the area in Alexandria east of Commonwealth Avenue, north of Braddock Road, east of Route 1, and south of East Glebe Road. Bob, Could you tell me where Del Ray is? I have an ancester who lived in Del Ray in the early 1900's but I have never heard of it before. I was looking thru the Alexandria City Directory when I found the listing. Eileen "Robert C. This is really a question which covers a very broad area including Alexandria. About 1937, the cavalry regiment at Fort Myer in Arlington used to exercise their mounts by riding out into the countryside and into the suburbs in the very early morning hours. On several occasions they passed by my front door--805 Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray. Does anyone recall similar experiences? Thanks, Bob McArtor

Connie, "Guide to the Records of Your District of Columbia Ancestors" by Eleanor M. V. I am looking for parents and siblings of Thomas W. Hickey who was born in Washington, D.C. in 1813 or 1814. He married Elizabeth Norman (b GA). One of his children was Charles Thomas Hickey who was born in 1853 in MS. Any information or clues I can persue will be greatly appreciated. Dixie Hickey
I went to a site where I found there could be a collection of the Foundry Methodist Church records, Asbury Library. I received some information that my family attended Foundry from about 1859 to the early 1900s. It appears the church name has changed and it is now predominately an African-American Church. Can anyone tell me about the Foundry Church and where the records of members are housed? Thank you. Connie
I see the Martin Luther King Public Library has a good collection of DC city directories. If you go to the library and would be willing to either extract or make photocopies (preferred) for me, let me know. Connie Bradbury
I am attempting to find death and probate records for Michael J. McDonnell and his wife. From what we have been able to learn, they lived in the Georgetown and/or northwest areas of Washington, DC. According to his tombstone, Michael died on 11 June 1886. He is buried at Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin Avenue. His wife, Mary (sorry, no maiden name known) died sometime in the 1850s. Michael remarried about 1857-58. To the best of our knowledge, McDONNELL is the original surname. Michael's naturalization papers read that way. However, he is buried as a McDONALD. We believe the family arrived in America in the 1849-50 timeframe. A daughter was born, in the District, in 1851. We have not been able to locate them in the 1850 census. The 1860 census lists them as McDONOUGH. In 1870 they were listed as McDONNELL. By 1880, they were listed as McDONALD. Today, cousins and other descendants use the McDONALD surname. We tend to discount the earliest version as a misunderstanding by the enumerator. Does anyone have access to information of this nature? I have the address for the Vital Records Division. I'm looking to verify information before making any requests to that office. Is there another department, of which I should be aware? Is it possible to do this research in person? I'm about a 2 hour drive from the District and not opposed to making the trip, if I'm allowed to get my hands dirty. Bob Thompson Harrisburg, PA
ISO ancestors/siblings of William HUDDLESON b circa 1780 1790 PA If SKS knows anything about or how and/or where to find documentation on this William or any others members of this family please contact me. What we know is below including direct line descendancy: per our Huddleson family tradition every George had a William and every William had a George for at least seven generations. George, Henry, & William appear to be the male given names of choice in this HUDDLESON family. per family notes: William Huddleston/Huddleson father of George Huddleson (born approx 1822), wife Rebecca. "Atlas of Montgomery Cnty, MD" shows Wm Huddleson on map of Bethesda, 1878. Text says "Bethesda District #7 William Huddleston (note spelling difference!) 140 acres farmer born Montgomery Cnty Settlement: 1815." Birth (1796) and death date (1846) from Pat Ludlam's compilation. Old Washington Star & other newspapers in the Americas digitized. Thank you, Ken, for alerting us that this process is underway to allow access to newspaper files to provide a greater availability of these great resources. A search on Google.com shows the following: http://www.infotoday.com/newsbreaks/wnd020812.htm; Cold North Wind to Digitize The Washington Star Archives Cold North Wind, Inc. and Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive (WPNI) have agreed to publish full-page, searchable images of The Washington Star's archives on the Internet. The Washington Star was a major newspaper in Washington, D.C., for many years but discontinued publication in 1981. Its archive rights were obtained by The Washington Post Co. Terms of the agreement were not released. The Washington Star's 1.5-million newspaper page archive spans a large portion of newspaper history in the nation's capital and chronicles about 130 years of U.S. history. The coverage dates to 1852 and includes events from the Civil War, Reconstruction, the two World Wars, the Depression, and the struggle for civil rights. Founded in 1999, Cold North Wind is currently creating an online newspaper archive. The company uses proprietary technology to turn newspaper archives on microfilm into high-resolution, searchable, digital images on the Internet. Cold North Wind provides revenue-producing solutions to organizations that hold valuable microfilm archives, as well as to distributors of online content. Cold North Wind recently launched Paper of Record (http://www.paperofrecord.com), a fee-based portal that provides access to a growing archive of historical newspapers, most of which are Canadian. WPNI will have the option of using The Washington Star stories elsewhere, including on washingtonpost.com. Source: Cold North Wind, Inc. TIA ~ Deborah in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, USA snip>>>>>Dear Listers, The following article may be useful to those researchers with ancestors who went to the USA. It recently appeared in a local newspaper regarding the digitizing of American and Mexican newspapers. The article reads "The Washington Star has joined more than 700 newspapers being digitized by Ottawa's Cold North Wind. The process allows old editions of newspapers, many of them dating back more than a century, to be viewed on the Internet. The contract caps a huge summer for Cold North, highlighted by a $10 million US deal to digitize Mexican newspapers." There is no indication as to which newspapers are done or being done nor how to access them on the net. Good hunting, Ken ______________________________
