Hi List, Exactly how does one get into the Washington Post on Ancestry.com? Sorry if I missed earlier instructions. Thanks, Ina Hagerstown, MD
I am looking for information on both Emily Albinger and William J Redstrake. They were married in Washington DC on November 19,1849. William is listed in the 1850 censes as a grocer. Any information on they and/or parents would be appreciated. Charlyn Albinger
I am trying to locate information on Emily Albinger and William J Redstrake. They were married November 19, 1849, in Washington DC. The name Red is in the 1850 censes. He is listed as a grocer. I would also like to get information on the parents of Emily Albinger. It is possible they came from Germany about 1837. I would appreciate any help. Charlyn Albinger
If there is a 1910 City Directory for Washington, DC, would someone please check and see if there is a Jacob Persinger listed? Thanks a bunch......... Janet in Ohio
I asked an unmet cousin in Virginia who was formerly with the DC Police Department for some leads for you, Harry, and this is what he sent. Just got home from work to a slew of messages. Thanks to Annie and Chuck for their help. No need to look for John and Catherine in the 1860. I know John died 1859*** and Catherine and the 4 daughters are listed together in the 1860. Catherine later remarried to Richard Kerr. Could someone double check the mortality schedule for the 1860 and see if it gives John's birthplace? I thought it was Ireland, but on the poor xerox from my cousin it looks like something else. Chuck, are you saying that even if the census taker came in July, the people would have answered for things as they were on June 1??? So John and Catherine (who married June 13) would not be listed together? Actually, my big problem is going backwards. A researcher hired by my cousin a few yrs ago gave us John's father's name as James Shields, and gave us 2 more generations back. BUT I don't think she is right! She did not give proof or the source of the parent's name. I think she picked the wrong John Shields. I think my John was born Ireland, and can't find any source which positively links John Shields to a parent in the US. (Though I haven't looked everywhere!) The most likely one (and the least helpful!) is the John listed in the 1850 as a hotel worker , age 24. I know my John had a brother Laurence Shields who married Harriet Barrett in 1860. He may have been married before. Maybe I need to look at wills for the James Shields who the researcher thinks was our John's father. It is probably his wife Sarah who is listed as a widow in the 1850. Thanks again to all for your help. Janet

I just looked at all 16 references for "Shields" in DC in 1860 - no reference to a John and Catherine :( They have to be somewhere! I can find nothing more informative The 1850 census for Washington has 3 John Shields listed... Although census taken in July/August time frame it is reflective of 1 June. ward 2 pg 69: John Shields, age 34, clerk dept., born in Penn ward 2 pg 126: John Shields, age 24, servant, born in Ireland He is listed amongst the workers of the hotel he is apparently employed at and not with family. ward 4 pg 244: John Shields, age 31, occupation - none, born in DC Chuck
I looked at the 1850 references for DC AND MD. There were no John and Catherine Shields listed together. I know they were m. in 1850 (June) and that the census was taken in July - so they technically should be listed as living together. Can you think of anyplace else they might have lived? My only other guess would be with his parents - if they were with the Kelly family, John's name - Shields - should show up in an index as it differs from the head of household. A search on all the Shields in DC may reveal - I will do that when I get time. Always love a challenge! I did look in the DC/MD 1900 index and did not find anything that I could call definite (a long shot anyway). I think I can look up the 1860 refs - I'll keep you posted. \Hi Harry: Sure it's your wifes family....ha. Anyhow, this is what I came up with. U.S. Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. This court was established in 1863 to REPLACE the circuit, district and criminal courts of the District. In 1936 its name was changed to the District Court of the United States for the District of Columbia, Its records consist chiefly of minutes, dockets, and case papers in equity case (including adoption, 1863-1900, law 1863-1934, CRIMINAL - 1863-1934, habeas corpus, 1863-1933, condemnation and admiralty, 1863-1929, bankruptcy, 1867-78, and appellate jurisdiction, 1870-1924, case; and general term minutes 1862-1903. These records are found and the National Archives. Does anyone researching in the Washington, DC area have access to marriages and births during the time period 1775-1820? If so, could they please check for HICKEY, specifically a Thomas born about 1803? Thanks. Dixie Hickey hickhome@cafes.net
Hi again listers: Does anyone have easy access to an index for the 1850 DC census? I've been concentrating on other areas and other lines, so I haven't kept up with what is out there for searching in the DC area. If anyone happens to have an index in their pocket :-) I am looking for a John Shields who would have been about 23--27 years old, single, perhaps living at home with parent(s). Thanks, Janet C
If her daughter of 10 was living with her gmother in 1900, perhaps Carrie died in childbirth. If the 1850 census was taken before June 13, John and Catherine would show up as children in their parents' households.
