    3. Hello, I just wanted to let you know that there were hospitals for mental patients in both Maryland and Virginia besides St. E's (Elizabeth's) in the District of Columbia. In Takoma Park, Maryland just blocks from the District line in Montgomery County there was/is Washington Sanitarium and Hospital, now called Washington Adventist Hospital. They took mentally ill patients. There were various veteran's hospitals that cared for those men and women who became ill.. It is my understanding that the hospitals had to list individuals for the census, so you may find your person on an institutional list. Helen

    3. If St. Elizabeth's was part of the D.C. or Federal Public Health System, you may find some info there. If the hospital is still in operation, perhaps they have an archivist who can help you. I worked for years at Springfield Hospital Center which which has been a long term care facility for the mentally ill in Carroll Co., MD for over 100 years. They have a historian well versed in the history of the hospital. One of the people I am currently researching from Prince George's County was apparently declared insane around 1880 according to the 1880 census. He died sometime before the 1900 census, as his wife is listed as a widow. I am trying to find additional information to place his date of death. 3. Hello List, When doing DC research you must keep something in mind. At the beginning DC could have been in Maryland or Virginia. So you must look at Maryland and Virginia Archives for early DC Research. Please read this <http://www.rootsweb.com/~dcgenweb/dcmdva.html> to clarify. It is from <www.usgenweb.com>. 3. Also added on Oct. 28 was: "The Daily Globe newspaper was located in Washington D.C.. This database is a fully searchable text version of the newspaper for the following years: 1854-55. The newspapers can be browsed or searched using a computer-generated index." So far I haven't found any of my people in this one. I'm hoping for the National Intelligencer to be added soon:-). 3. Hi Ina, If you are already a member of Ancestry.com, the newspaper subscription is a separate subscription. Just go to their site and follow the links to the newspapers. They will instruct you on how to subscribe. Right now they have some issues from 1900-1924 on line and they are searchable which makes it nice. The drawback is that some names are like other words and you may get erroneous "hits", but I have found a good deal of information in just the little bit that is on line.
