I am on a list for Liverpool and there has been a discussion on stonemasons. Does anyone know whether stonecarvers and marble cutters wrking in 19th c Washington would have belonged to an organization similar to England's Friendly Soc of Stonemasons? Are there records of emplyment? Or would they just have been common laborers? Janet
Would appreciate assistance for 2 lookups at MLK Library, Washingtonian Room: (1) 1900 DC directory -- Seek coordinates for "Madison" street/place in 1900 (1500 block). The old directories have section in front called "Street Directory" which lists street names and locations. Have found many street names were re-named around turn of the century, and I don't think this Madison St. is the same as the street in upper northwest. (2) 1868 DC Directory - Need lookup for person surnamed "Queen" with reference to business "Jackson & Queen". My Gr-Gr-Grandfather's (Henry Jackson) 1868 directory listing referenced this business name. I'd like to know who his partner was. Was born & raised in DC. Have been researching my family lines (African American) for almost 10 years. Have traced several lines back to slave ancestors. The "Henson Ridge" housing development project underway in Anacostia is named for my 4th-Great-Grandfather, Tobias Henson, who was born a slave abt 1770 and purchased his freedom in 1818. Miss having access to DC resources. Good to know there are people who may be able to help. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. Janice M. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Does anyone know of a hospital called Government Hospital for the insane? My ggggreat grandfather died in that hospital in 1903 and was buried there on the hospital grounds. Is it still there or did it change names? Can I get any records? Kathy
Hi All: I just found this site....and I was able to finally find the husband of my great aunt who killed her! Anyhow, it's quite interesting. It's executions in America before lethal injection. (sounds rather morbid) http://users.bestweb.net/~rg/execution/ Happy Hunting, Debi
Hi All! I'm looking to connect with any and all descendants of both the Original Proprietors and the Proprietors in 1791 of the land that Washington, DC was built on. The reason is this--there is a new museum opening in the Spring of 2003, called the City Museum. It will be located in the Carnegie Museum and will be all about the early days of the city and the history prior to it's building. I'm a descendant of the Burnes family, they owned about 600 acres in Prince George's Co that became the southern grounds of the White House, the Treasury, the Postal Building, the Smithsonian, the old Navy Yard, the Washington Monument, the State Dept, the Jefferson Memorial. Their house was located on the corner of 17th Street and Constitution Ave, the location of the Pan American Building today. Myself and many of my Burnes cousins will be attending the opening ceremony of the City Museum and we would like other descendants of the Proprietors to attend as well. Wouldn't it be great to have all of them represented? I will be posting a list of all of the names of them and would love to hear from their descendants! Barb Price 6th Great Grandaughter of David Burnes I
If anyone has an index or access to an index for the above referenced time frame, I am searching for a death date for a MARGARET ETHERINGTON or MARGARET FITTALL. It is believed she passed away in late 1957 or early 1958, yet we can find no record of her death. She passed away at the old Providence Hospital and was about 70 years old. We've checked with DC funeral homes, cemeteries (she was known to be Episcopalian) but can't find this very elusive lady. Thanks. *********************************************************************** This electronic mail transmission may contain confidential or privileged information. There were lots of Indian tribes in the DC/MD area - Wicomicos, Potomacks, Choptanks, Accokeeks, etc. Some still exist - the Piscataways come to mind. Many place names are named for Indian tribes. See http://www.brokenclaw.com/native/mdevents.html and also click on their links. If you do a google.com search you will probably come up with loads more information. Good luck. -----Original Message----- From: REB9772@aol.com [mailto:REB9772@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, November 02, 2002 10:04 AM To: WashingtonDC-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WashingtonDC'' ] Native Americans Hi List Can anyone tell me was there any native Americans in the Washington DC and Maryland area? There were at one time many native Americans in Maryland. The Algonquian Federation inhabited much of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Piscataway Nation inhabited Maryland and Virginia.. Specific "tribes": Delaware, Powhatan, Nanticoke, Susquehannack, Chapticoes, Accohannock. Of these, the only one I am aware of still having active tribal functions are the Nanticoke. I am not sure if the Bureau of Indian Affairs recognizes them. > Hi List > > Can anyone tell me was there any native Americans in the Washington DC >and Maryland area?
