Hi, I'm trying to locate a deed previous to 1828 as I have one which indicates the sale of some property in DC by a John Mattingly and wife, Harriet. I'm interested in locating the deed in which this couple acquired this property. I have the "new" and "old" deed numbers, book number, etc. I have all of the information that was available on the film for the land deed index. If anyone might be going to this office or would be willing to go for me, I would greatly appreciate their contacting me. I would be most happy to pay for any expenses that they may incur. Thanks so very much! Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
The Maryland site has a listing of "deceased physicians" who studied at John Hopkins. That's where I found my great-great grandfather. In the 1900 Census of DC Dr. Aaron Baldwin is 86 (b. 1914). He was b. in NY as were both his parents according to the census. He is listed as a boarder living with David and Mary Gitt. Aaron Baldwin found in: Census Microfilm Records: Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, 1900 Lived in: Washington, Washington County, District of Columbia Series: T623 Microfilm: 161 Book: 1 Page: 4 There are no other Aaron Baldwin's in DC listed in 1900 Hope that helps - I'll search in newspapers later Unfortunately, census records prior to 1850 don't give a lot of solid info, but you may be able to get a location in NY and how many were in the home. I might be nuts but it seems to me that awhile back someone on the list mentioned something about a book on physicians that practiced in DC. You might check with the Georgetown University Library to see if such a thing exists. Yes, they would be at the Recorder of Deeds. As in most localities, early deeds have to be found by poring through volumes of indexes. It is very unlikely that the staff there would do the research---unless, perhaps, your reference to an "old" and "new" number refers to a book and page. Hi, everyone! I'm trying to locate a DC Land Deed prior to 1828. I have one for a John and Harriet Mattingly in 1828 but I'm trying to find the one for this land upon the Mattinglys purchasing it or perhaps obtaining it as a gift. I called the Recorder of Deeds the other day and left a message but I'm uncertain if they are the correct place for older deeds. Would anyone have any idea how I can locate this? I have the old number for the deed and a "new" number. Thanks, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Has anyone ever heard of Barker's Bakery in the 1930's and 1940's. I believe it was in NW Washington or in Georgetown. My uncle William Murray was said to have purchase it during the depression. Eileen

Hello! I am seeking information on Arbaugh's Restaurant which used to be located somewhere up on the Northwest side of DC. My grandfather used to be a chef there (30s, 40s and 50s until he died of heart trouble in 1953.) I believe Arbaugh's was famous for it's barbecue ribs and was frequented by actors, actresses, athletes and other noteable persons. My dad was a server there for awhile as a teenager. He thinks he got his middle name (Herbert) from one of the owners. I would like to learn more about the history of this restaurant. Who were its owners? When was it opened? When was it closed? If anyone knows anything about this restaurant (as well as it's owners and employees), I would sure appreciate hearing from you. Thank you! Dave Duncan Ohio
Hi List Looking for any information on Frank J Hanley from Washington DC late 1930's to 1966? First wife Winona Helen Beach, 2nd wife Enid V Crolius. Enid died in 1973 I have no information on Winona or Frank. I would like to expand this branch of family tree if any one has any information please email del.nolan@gte.net
I'm not sure of the exact spelling, but I understand that the "Mahaffer" family owned a bakery in SW during the 1930s. Does anyone know the correct spelling of this family's name? Thanks, Joann Ellis Humphries
In the census of 1880, two of my ancestors, John B. SCOTT and Everett SCOTT were working in the HOWARD HOUSE, which was like a hotel. Everett Scott married Carrie Belle FOXWELL in 1886 in DC, and he gave his occupation as Clerk in the Howard House. I could not find Everett Scott or his wife in the DC census of 1900, which seemed strange to me. They had a daughter May 5, 1890 in 506 Rhode Island Ave. NW and seemed to disappear from there, especially Carrie Belle (Foxwell) Scott. She could have died in childbirth. I could find neither one of them in the census of 1810 for DC, but I found ads of Everett Scott trying to find similar jobs as he had in the Howard House from December 1906 to May 1907. The only address given was the Howard House. Someone wrote me that he also was putting in ads in 1909 from the Howard House. As he wasn't in the census of 1910, he must have gone to MD or VA to work, but returned to DC in the census of 1920 as a SINGLE roomer and was retired. He was also in the DC census of 1930 as a WIDOWER in an apartment. He died in 1931 and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery. His death certificates stated that he was a widower married to Carrie Scott. I would like information on the history of the HOWARD HOUSE. I understand that it was located on Pennsylvania and 6th Street NW. I am more interested in the closing of the Howard House than the opening. I would like any information or thoughts on how I can find out where the Everetts that are listed above were between 1890 when their daughter was born and 1920 when Everett Scott appeared in the DC census roles. If anyone has access to city directories, this might help me. I would like any information or ideas on the whereabouts of Carrie Belle Scott, who must have died or remarried between 1890 and 1900, as her daughter was staying with the daughter's grandmother in the census of 1900. Please help me, if you can, as these are my great grandmother and grandfather. If you know anything about Gabriel James Lanyon Foxwell who married Alice Maria Davis in DC in 1855 and had a daughter named Carrie Belle Foxwell and Alice V. Foxwell, who were all in the family mode in the census of 1880. Gabriel died in 1898 leaving Alice M. Foxwell to live with her daughters in 1900, but I could find none of them in the census of 1910 in DC. Alice V. Foxwell married a Marks, but thats all I know for DC. They showed up in Norfolk, VA after the census of 1910, including the daughter that was born in 1890, my grandmother. I hope I have not overwhelmed anyone, but any help you can give will be appreciated, John Barlow in Tennessee

All the postings regarding photos reminded me of something that just happened to me and to some of my cousins... After visiting a line of cousins that no one had made contact with in over 50 years, they were nice enough to share many of their old family photos with us. Unfortunately, some had nothing more than "my aunt & great-aunt" written on the back. No dates, no locations, nothing else. (We were fairly certain that these were all DC-related.) Once we sat down with the family tree print-out, and knowing who the original owner of the photo was, we could then generally pick out from the tree the most likely names of people in the photos. It also helps to compare the unknown photos to other photos with names--often they will have been taken at the same time, and perhaps one will have some names that can then be matched to the unlabeled photos. The clothing will also give some clue as to the year, which will help in identifying "John"--was he a child, a young person, an adult, or elderly at the time of the photo...Check the family tree for the various people named "John" and their ages at the approximate time the photo was taken. Just as we all looked different in 1960, 1980, and 2000, so too did people in 1860, 1880, and 1900. After looking at a few photos that have dates in various books or magazines, it gets to be very easy to tell the difference between 1870 clothing and 1905 clothing, for example. It's not perfect, but it helps! Did I hear correctly that the DC Archives was closing down until spring to move to the City Museum? Would someone please confirm this. If this is true, would someone please let everyone know when it reopens. I would like to make a trip to DC sometime this spring but would like to make sure that I can get information from DC Archives. Thanks Eileen in South Carolina
Ray You might try the DC Archives. I copied the following information, about what records are available at the DC Archives, that someone else posted to the list several months ago. Records in the Archives include birth (1874-1928) and death (1874-1931) certificates, marriage certificates (1858-1991), wills and probates (1801-1990), indentures of apprenticeship (1812-1893), guardianships (1862-1939), articles of incorporation (1870-1955), building permits (1949-1995), and land records (1840-1930). The Archives maintains subject files, case files, minutes of proceedings, speeches, studies and reports, news releases, and other related records of the District government Can issue non-certified copies for free, they have original wills 1850+, birth certs 1874-1920, death certs till about 1931 (per phone call to Archives), probate records and more. Here are the address of the Archives, the archivist's name, phone, and email address. D.C. Archives 1300 Naylor Court, NW Washington, D.C. 20001-4225 202-671-1107 Robert S. Nelson D.C. I have many old photos with nothing on the back to indicate who they are, but there are two that have some information: One is a couple and written on the back are "To Charles E ****** to his 32nd birthday Febr 24/97 by his sincere friends Mr & Mrs William Feldbauer (last name is hard to read could be Feldhaus)(1897) The second one is of a woman and at the back on the bottom it has Mrs Hudson 406 11st Washington, DC (looks like late 1800's) If anyone may have a connection I would be glad to share a copy.
