    3. Elizabeth, I spent 29 years at the GPO. There are several building which are collectively known as "the GPO". The first was a building purchased from Cornelius Wendell on December 1, 1860. Following the invasion of the South by the U.S. Government, an addition was added. After that several additional building were erected and there have been so many inside changes I am certain I would be lost after only being retired 5 years. Hope this helps. 3. Thanks. I wanted to make sure they're still doing business or if maybe it might have slowed down enough that I don't have to wait a year. I was going to order from VitalChek, but they overcharge for postage and keep the money even if they find nothing. It's just like those D.C. government workers to say they can't find it (even though they don't bother looking) and keep the money. I remember a Francis Alexander who worked there who was always very helpful and fast. I don't know if he is still there or not. I sent a mail request as I had the Box number for the will that I was requesting. I bet it had a copy of it within a couple of weeks or perhaps less! I recognized the handwriting so the same nice fellow was still there! Also, there was no charge. Hope all is going well with you. Nothing new on my Mattingly...like Harriett...but I thank you again for all of your help. 3. Does anyone know the current status of the D.C. Archives? Does it still take up to a year or more to get copies of death certificates and wills? Are they still accepting requests by mail or does it have to be in person? Is it still free or are they charging for it? Sorry for all the questions, but I have another request to send them and don't want to submit a request if the policy has changed. I recently moved from the D.C. area much too far away to go in person and have to rely on snail mail requests. Some time ago someone had mentioned the D.C. website as a possible source for making requests, but I could not find a link associated with this on their site. Bill Boswell

    1. RE: [WashingtonDC'' ] Mt Olivet Cemetery and Death Certificates
    2. William Boswell
    3. I called Mount Olivet early last year to find out what their procedures were for obtaining grave information since I had heard they were charging now. I was told that there was a fee of $50 which included burial information for up to 10 people. You might want to check with them to make sure this hasn't changed. I think they've been flooded with so many requests that they don't have the time for genealogists. It is a very active cemetery, but my past experience (over four years ago) with them had been pretty good. At that time they weren't charging and freely gave the information away. The D.C. Archives used to allow people to go in and research the records themselves making their own copies. I don't know if this has changed or not since I haven't had any dealings with them for a couple of years. I don't know anything about the Vital Records office, but am interested myself since the D.C. Archives seems to have a very long waiting list. Olivet Cemetery? I seem to remember postings to the list which mentioned difficulties working with Mt Olivet, but since at that time I did not know I had relatives interred there, I didn't pay much attention. Will they furnish you with information from their files, or will they just show you where the graves are located? I'm interested in funeral home information, exact places and dates of death, etc. I also need to obtain a death certificate for my greatgrandmother who died in September 1956 in Washington, DC. I know I won't be able to obtain it at the DC Archives, but does the Vital Records office respond to written requests or is it better to go in person? 3. Hello I'm new to the list and would like some help. I found a Gloria Grafton in the 1930 census NY,(actress) who my grandmother use to tell me that she was her half sister. It stated she was 20 yrs. old and born in Washington. I am trying to find her in perhaps 1910 or 1920 census. Trying to locate her parents name and if there were any other siblings. I don't know how true this is that she was my grandmothers half sister, but she must have been born around 1910. If this is true, her father if I am correct should be Robert Grafton. Can anyone look this up for me? I thankyou in advance. Anyone who posts here until she/he is removed or turns off their auto-response system will get one. Just delete it. 2. Elizabeth Culhane
    3. Hi, I just found an O. F. Mattingly listed as a printer on personnel records from the NARA. I have found him in the 1870 DC Census listed as O. T. Mattingly age 30, a printer, with an A. B. Mattingly, M, a machinist, and a C. C. Mattingly, F, keeping house. They are all born in Virginia. Does anyone have any idea who they might be? Although my Thomas Joseph Mattingly was about 13 years than this chap, they were in the same profession. Thanks, Elizabeth

Does anyone know if I can find the DC mdgs. online for that period? or could someone be so kind as to look it up for me. Don`t know when but certainly after the 1880 census. TIA, Sue in Al.
