Could you check this stones and bones for any Dooley's. I'm looking for a James Dooley he was born in Virginia around 1855 that all the info I have for him on his birth. Can anyone help? Anne -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 7 Jul 2005 13:13:32 EDT Subject: [WashingtonDC'' ] About Stones and Bones Susan in Missouri Stones and Bones was originally published in book form by the Prince George's County Genealogical Society. From the information I read in the book and subsequently on the CD version which I own, they began with information from a survey conducted by the Toaping Castle branch of the DAR. Members of the PG Co Gen Society then volunteered to "walk" the various cemeteries and do a stone by stone recording of them (although many of the stones originally recorded had been destroyed since the DAR survey.) Many people also checked the church registers for information on burials that might not be marked by a stone. The Gen Society published the information in book form and later published an addendum with corrections and additions. The cd which is currently available contains both the original Stones and Bones and the addendum. It records church cemeteries and private (family-type) cemeteries located in Prince George's County. It does not list interments in the "commercial" cemeteries, such as Fort Lincoln, etc. I have seen the original book in libraries in PG County, and it's probably in other places too. The CD can be purchased from the Prince George's Genealogical Society. I am attaching a newsletter from the Godfrey Library. I belong to the library and for $35 a year I have found the research resources more than worthwhile. Also, note on the bottom that they will accept, transcribe and "keep" family bibles. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with the clerks and administration in DC know that you are in for a battle. Or maybe I should say up against a wall. Some do not fit this rule. But I have had nothing but incompetence everywhere. Not only do most of them not know what they are doing - they don't care. As I said I did run into one who was helpful, but she got stared down by the rest of the staff. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Emaress Nova" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 10, 2005 9:31 AM Subject: Re: [WashingtonDC'' ] Question about Prison Records > > Wendy, > > Since you are right there in Reston, you might > just call Martin Luther King Library 202-727-2255 > and ask for genealogy room. Could be Lorton, Virginia. They closed the prison down a few years back. I don't know where the records would have gone. Wendy in Reston, Virginia
Wendy, Since you are right there in Reston, you might just call Martin Luther King Library 202-727-2255 and ask for genealogy room. I had a very nice and helpful conversation with librarian in there about where to look for some info. Might also try DC Office of Public Records. 202-727-2054. And then, of course there is National Archives. Good hunting! __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected. That is The DC Penal Institution at Lorton, VA. Lorton Reformatory as it was known is now extinct. It was closed and buildings torn down within the last 10 years. In the early years Lorton was a self sustaining institution that grew and raised all their own food, they made their own clothes, learned trades so that when they were released they would be able to find jobs. My father worked there first as a guard and finally as the safety engineer for about 30 years. By the time he retired, Lorton had changed and no longer was able to support itself because it had become a maximum care facility. It is very difficult to get anything from the DC government these days. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. Does anyone know if there are City Directories for Washington DC for the year 1917? I have an address of what looks like: 1318 RI Ave. NW Can I assume that RI might be Rhode Island????? Any help is appreciated! Elaine May
Hello I have an interesting question is there any way I'd be able to find the prison records for Lawton, Virginia? My Grandfather was a bootlegger during the depression and got caught. He of course had other trades but I guess times got tough, his name was Frederick Banks Kelly, year I was told was 1931, Lawton, Virginia. Being in California I don't know where to start. Thanks so much, Cecile cecile/sis

The National Archives also has a collection of D.C. Directories, probably all of them. I was able to handle them, copy them, etc. during a visit there about five years ago.
