I don't know, Carolyn. At one point, Heritage was interested, but then I moved and wasn't able to provide the manuscript when they wanted it. Maybe I'll ask them again now that they have new ownership. Jane -------------- Original message -------------- From: Traversclt@aol.com > Hi Jane, > > Nice to see you back on the list again. I am a native Washingtonian, born there in the old Providence Hospital in 1951. Parents lived at 13th Street near Barney Circle and the Sousa Bridge. Lived in various locations in DC until 1960 when we moved to College Park. >From there to Seabrook, graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School in 1969, got married in 1969, lived in Bladensburg and then moved to St. Mary's County in early 1971 where I have been ever since. My mother's family is from here (Hollywood and Drayden) and so far, thanks to a cousin, we can trace her family (Hewitt) back to the late 1700s here and the early 1600s in the Jamestown area of Virginia. I commuted to work from St. Mary's to DC for 22 years, then went to work at St. Mary's College of Maryland, next to Historic St. Mary's City. Didn't get the genealogy bug until after I left DC and accidentally discovered two booklets loaded with wonderful information that the cousin had done for our family before he died. Have relatives buried at Cedar Hill and Washington National (Suitland). Haven't done any research in DC libraries or Archives. Want to, need to, will do so -- one of these days when I get a chance to get a little more organized. I'd like to pick up where our cousin left off. I'd like to prove a statement my grandfather made once upon a time. So, until I can get to the research itself, I'm picking up relative books here and there, reading a little microfilm, and squirreling away all the tips and information provided here. Thanks to all who provide the information to help newbies understand how things work at the various research locations, as well as the tips, explanations of terms, and everything else you give us. What a wealth of information you all provide! Many, many thanks. I have a couple of the major books relative to the County if anyone ever needs a lookup of any kind. I'm more than willing to take a look for you. It is interesting to see the responses. I have great-grandparents at Rock Creek and another set at Glenmont. Then the family burials moved to the "suburbs" - Cedar Hill, Ft. Lincoln. Not from DC but lived in DC 26 years and will have an occasional research trip. I know $150 seems a lot for Oak Hill Cemetery, but it is a really significant cemetery and its records have been unavailable to the public until now. If you are doing work in Georgetown, Oak Hill records are essential. I'm guessing the Peabody Room at the Georgetown Public Library will have a copy, probably also Gelman Library at George Washington University, which has a significant local DC history collection, and probably also Georgetown University library. If either of the universities has it, you can borrow it on inter-library loan. Jane Donovan
I've recently moved back to the DC area after having left in '87. I'm presently living in eastern Loudoun county, but will be moving to Arlington at the beginning of April. I'm going back to school in a few months, so need to be closer to the District. (I like Loudoun county, but just can't stay there at this point.) I lived in the District itself in 1979 and 1980, then returned to the area between 1985 and 1987, during which time I lived in Alexandria -- not Old Town, but the part with the scenic view of I-395. I'm looking for a job, preferably with the Federal government. (I worked in the Federal civil service between '85 and '87, then took an opportunity to leave and get a better job than what I had.) I'm here now with an M.A. in History, which I received in December, following my turning in my finished thesis. I've gotten my researcher card at the Library of Congress and have so far managed one research trip. (That's another reason for my moving closer in: getting into the District from here is a big production. (I never take a car into the District.)) I haven't made it to NARA yet, but I've walked by the building. So far, I've been to the Smithsonian twice, once to the Freer/Sackler (Asian art) and once to the National Gallery of Art. It's really expensive getting travelling to and from the District from here (Loudoun county). I haven't been to the Balch Library to do research yet. (It's in Leesburg.) The one time I've been there, the research room was locked, but the building door was open. (This was during posted open hours.) When I was here in '79-'80, I really had no information at all about my family history and what work I had been able to do was basically shooting in the dark. In '84, I attended a terrific gen. workshop that got me started in the right direction: I had some info when I was here in the mid-'80s, but not enough for me to do anything substantive. Then, a few months after I left, a relative sent me a copy of another relative's research and, in '91, about a month after I went on line (to Prodigy) I got info that finally got me linked with what have turned out to be my group of Whitakers. (I'm part of a branch that was essentially undocumented.) I had lots of time after I returned to South Carolina in '93 to get a _lot_ of genealogical experience with documents and newspapers, including lots of trips to courthouse record rooms. In response to your query about people from DC..... I'm a fourth generation Washingtonian, born 1937. My family names are Nau, Acton and Coates. Would love to hear from someone familiar with these names. I live outside of Washington but don't get there for research much.... sort of new on the block. I enjoy all these informative E-mails, and plan on going to the to MLK Library some day. -June

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Have visited Glenwood, Oak Hill, Cedar Hill and Congressional Cemeteries. Also been to Library of Congress, Vital Records Office, Archives, MLK Library and Courthouse. Thank goodness I always have someone with me who knows their way around the District. Faye Caynor

I was born in NW DC (Glover Park) & lived there until age 12 when we moved to Bowie, in nearby PG Co., MD. Ater just a little over a year in Bowie, we moved to Crofton (AA Co.) where I ended up living for many years. In 1992, I moved to west central Florida - was going to stay a just couple of years and ended up being there a little over 12 years! I bloomed where I was planted Now, I am happily back in Merryland (AA Co., Davidsonville). I love the seasons and the area~ Ironically, I 'discovered' gen research while in FL and so whenever I visited my home area, I would get to DC for research - mostly the Washingtonia Room at the MLK library. Now, I live fairly near DC and am in No. VA (Falls Church) every weekend to spend time with my beloved and I hardly get into DC and have little time for real research, though I dabble in it here and there. I currently live in Oregon but when I go to DC to visit my son who lives in the area, I always take the metro downtown to either the DC Public Records (DC Public Archives), the City Museum , the MLK library, cemeteries and churches... Having grown up there I am familiar with the layout, transportation, etc. I graduated from B-CC. I do not go to the DC Public Records on Naylor Court alone though; I would not recommend any woman going there alone as it is not in a good part of town... But there are a lot of original documents there and Bob Nelson has been very helpful. Ann in Oregon

I never went into DC for research because going into town during the week either wasn't an option (working in suburbs all week) or else the thought of dealing with traffic, parking, metro, etc. wasn't very encouraging.
