    3. I am pleased to inform all of you that RootsWeb has approved the DC-Memories list. I had heard that they were approving lists that had been denied back in the fall from other people and since we were never officially denied just put on the thinking list I decided to try again. We will keep the yahoo list because on that we can send pictures by attachment to the list members there if we want. Also the site itself has a section to place photos. With all the people here who have at some point of time lived in DC or near DC I think the list could be really great! margy Directions for subscribing are below: To subscribe from the list, including the list digest, please send an email to DC-MEMORIES-request@rootsweb.com with the word "subscribe" in the subject and the body of the email with no additional text. To post a message to this list, send your email to: DC-MEMORIES@rootsweb.com

    1. Re: [WashDC] DC Research
    2. I too am one of those rare persons who have lived in the Washington, DC, Metro area all my life and worked there as a younger woman. I was born in DC, moved to Prince George's County, MD, when I was 6 mos old, and lived in Prince George's County, until I moved to Charles County, MD, in 2004. I worked in DC for the USAF in the temporary buildings on the mall (long gone now) for several years. My dad worked for what is now Metro through it's changes from Washington Railway Cars (I might have this name wrong), to Capitol Transit, then DC Transit, and finally Metro when he retired at age 62. We always went into DC to shop, to the movies at Lowes Capitol, my orthodontist, the hospital, and on and on. Now, in later years when I've become interested in genealogy, I'm hesitant to venture into downtown DC. I'd love to visit the DC Archives, but it's in a "bad" section of town. Also Glenwood Cemetery and Mt. Olivet where some of my maternal ancestors are interred, but again I don't like to venture there alone. The National Archives is probably much safer as it is near the National Mall, near the museums and other tourist attractions. Someone mentioned Washington National Cemetery in Suitland, MD. My mother's family and my parents are buried there, and the folks in the office were very helpful with information when I asked. I went there in person but I'm sure they'd be as helpful in response to a letter or a phone call. 1. [WashDC] Made First Trip to Virginia Room Today
    2. Elizabeth Whitaker
    3. I made my first trip to the Virginia Room of the Fairfax library today. First, I had to _find_ the Fairfax library. The directions on their web site are detailed, but not much use unless you either memorize them before you go, have someone along to read them to you, or have a GPS unit. I just kept circling blocks once I saw the sign. (It's not very visible from the street if you're looking for it for the first time.) I finally found the entrance to the (small)) parking lot. Fortunately, the new library building will be opening sometime in the next few months. (I forgot to ask if there's a specific date.) They have some Washington DC city directories on microfilm, some on microfiche and others as hard copy, many in archival boxes. (Archival boxes are things to keep fragile, ready-to-fall-apart books.) Of course, they have lots of Northern Virginia info, especially for Fairfax and Prince William counties. Much to my surprise, one of my Virginia lines, which I expected to find further south and west, apparently were in Fairfax county. (I have to do some checking as it was one of those families where it seems like every other male was named William.) The Virginia Room is on the third floor, so you might want to take the elevator. (I was surprised as I didn't think the library had a third floor.) There are plastic ducks and a plastic penguin on the roof of the second floor, which you can see from the Virginia Room. The librarians were very helpful. Elizabeth Whitaker

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Amanda and Cora SPENCER which was taken at a studio in Delavan, Wisconsin. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with the oldest woman in the photograph likely in her 60's and the younger woman in her 30's. Based on limited research I believe I've been able to locate this family through census records as follows: 1900 census of Delavan, WI: Amanda C. SPENCER, age 55, born Dec 1844, a widow, 1 child/1 living, born WI, parents born NY Cora L. SPENCER, dau, age 19, born Oct 1880, born IL, parents born NY/WI, at School Harriet A. UTTER, Mother, age 77, a widow, born Mar 1823, 3 children/2 living, born NY, parents born NY 1910 census of Delavan, WI: Amanda SPENCER, age 65, a widow, 1 child/1 living, born WI, parents born NY, Own Income Cora SPENCER, dau, age 29, born IL, parents born NY/WI 1920 census of Washington DC: (living in the house of Albert S. & Irma J. PROSE) Amanda C. SPENCER, lodger, age 75, a widow, born WI, parents born NY Cora SPENCER, lodger, age 39, born IL, parents born WI, a Social Service Worker I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [WashDC] DC City Directories and Excel Spreadsheets
    2. Bill, What a great idea you have for cross referencing last names and DC addresses. I have been wondering for quite a while if this was possible. If only these city directories were online and we could plug in an address for a certain year and learn who all was living there. I have obtained microfilm from the LDS over the past years for various DC directories and have written down addresses of various names that I was looking. In one instance I found my gggrandfather in Georgetown living with his mother (circa 1870's). I did not know for sure until then that she was his mother. I am not very familiar with spreadsheets, but my husband is, kind of. Can you explain a little further how to set the names and addresses up? You wouldn't have an example, would you? Thanks so much for the wonderful idea!! 2. Brenda and any others interested, I have no connection to Roberta Robey, at least that I know of... It is possible that she could be connected as some distant connections have only been researched as far as the 1930 census... It seems my Robeys were part of the Port Tobacco, Charles County group... My line moved to DC in the mid-1830s from Charles County... Chuck In a message dated 3/1/2007 8:44:38 A.M.
