One great grandson established a line centered around Vicksburg, Mississippi after the Civil War. A great granddaughter moved to Kansas with her family when she was twelve years old. She and her husband (MANLEY) were missionaries in India and all but one of their children were born there. Today, many of her descendants live throughout CA, OR, and WA. I had a major computer crash last Oct (2005) and lost all of my e-mails and addresses. PLEASE, if you have ever contacted me before last Oct, send me another e-mail about your PENLEY connection / information so I will know who you are and how to contact you. If you have a PENLEY ancestor in or from Maine or New England, you are urged to contact us. If you can provide your direct line back to your earliest known PENLEY ancestor(s), it will be a great help in placing you in the correct branch. The Maine PENLEY family is primarily the descendants of the children of the progenitor, Joseph 1 PENLY, who was born in England in 1755, arrived in Freeport, Maine, in 1770, and died in 1844. Joseph was first married 1780 to the widow, Esther FOGG JOHNSON, and they had 10 children. They moved from the Freeport area to Danville abt 1792. Following Esther's death in 1796, Joseph second married 1797 Thankful MOODY and they had six children. However, there was an earlier Sam(p)son PENLEY who was living in Falmouth (now Portland), Maine in 1658. He was later associated with House Island, Cape Elizabeth, and Long Neck. He was a fisherman and jail keeper. When he died in 1688, he was survived by his wife, Rachel; a son, Sampson; and 3 daus: Jane or Ann who married Dennis MURROUGH (MURROW ?) Dorcas who married Hugh WILCOTT Mary who married Henry BAILEY His son, Sampson PENLEY, was a mariner who is believed to have died without issue. How or if these two PENLEY families may have been related is not known, but the PENLEY family genealogists welcome the participation of Sam(p)son's descendants in hopes that future research will give us some resolution to these questions. The Maine PENLEY family has an annual reunion, at 2 PM every 2nd Sunday in July. The special service is held at PENLEY Corner Church, state route 136 (same as Riverside Dr on the Auburn side), 3 miles south of the Auburn - Lewiston, Maine bridge (just a few hundred feet south of the Auburn city limits sign). Route 136 cuts across from Freeport to Auburn. This year the meeting will be Sunday, 9 July 2006. Rev E Richard WRENTZEL, pastor of visitation at the Turner Village Church, Turner, Maine, will the guest speaker. He had served as pastor of many churches in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Maine, but is now retired from active preaching. Family members who now live in AR, CT, MD, and ME will be participating in the service. Family genealogists will be available both before and after the service to receive information from descendants and discuss your line with you. If you have New England PENLEY's, the chances are very good that you are a descendant of Joseph 1 PENLY. If you are unable to be at the reunion on July 9th, PLEASE contact me. And if you know of other PENLEY descendants, please let me know who they are and how to contact them by phone or e-mail by sending an e-mail directly to me (to protect their privacy re phone numbers and addresses). Thank you for your help. Our success, in updating the genealogy of Joseph 1 PENLY's descendants, is dependent on the contributions made by all of our living cousins. Janice
