I am from New Zealand and new to this list. I'm afraid that I don't know this "neck of the woods"(Washington area) at all, so I hope you'll forgive me if I make mistakes. Also, I am not sure whether this request went through to the list as I had noticed the address was wrong (on the 25th.) I have found out that my g-g-grand-parents lived in Seattle and would like to find out any information on them through census or orbits, but you will be best at advising me where to start. My ancestors, John HILLSDON and his wife Ann, children:-Louisa, Ernest Charles, Rosa H, Clara H, Henry P, Annie M & Elizabeth travelled to the United States roughly about 1863. John apparently registered and adopted his surname from HILLSDON to HUTTON in Seattle. Recently though, I came across the probate of Ann which shows her name as:- "HILLSDON Ann, of Seattle Washington America (wife of John Hillsdon) died 30 July 1898 etc, etc. which is now confusing, as I don't know whether to refer to them here as HILLSDON'S or HUTTON'S. I must point out however, that their decendants all had the name Hillsdon- Hutton, whether hyphenated or not. We were told it had something to do with a feud between brothers before John left his homeland of England. Some of the questions I would like to ask is- 1/ would I be able to find out the information of the name-change if it is registered in Seattle? 2/ I have been trying to hunt John down for a long time as he always seemed to avoid being at home on Census day. Could some kind soul please look him up for me? I'm sure Ann would have been at home! Thank you, Judi Guest (NZ)
