Mrs. Cooke died Friday, July 11. She was 99. She was born Oct. 25, 1903, in San de Fuca, near present-day Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, Island County, Wash., to Alfred and Alma (Morgan) Johnson. She attended school in Tacoma, Wash., and graduated as valedictorian from Lincoln High School in 1920, when she was 16. She then attended the University of Washington, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and her five-year normal diploma on Aug. 29, 1924. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Phi Greek Sorority. In 1927 she was awarded a "Life Diploma," which entitled her to supervise public schools in the state of Washington. She worked for the Carnation Milk Company and later taught school in Olympia, Wash. She won prizes for her commercial and student publications. She also wrote for national and local newspapers. She married John Bleecker Cooke Jr. on Dec. 20, 1934, in California. They resided in Astoria, Ore.; Agana, Guam; Alameda; Wake Island; Berkeley; San Carlos; Plandome Manor; Long Island, N.Y.; and Lake Wi! ldwood. She was a member of the AAUW, the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, Republican Women, and the Penn Valley Community Church. She was an avid traveler and gardener. She enjoyed bargaining in foreign markets and had traveled around the world nine times. She is survived by her sons John Bleecker Cooke III of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Phillip A. Cooke of Yuba City and their wives; five grandsons; two granddaughters and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cooke, in 1997. Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
