The validity of death certificate information depends on whether the informant knows anything or not. Often they don't especially if the person is very old. You are more likely to get better information on a birth record, although those can be fudged if the parents are so inclined. The validity of the data on the SSN application does depend on what that person used for proof. It at least gives you a place to look for the birth record, also parents' names and other data. It fixes the person in a place and time since you get the date of the application as well as the person's residence at that time.
I wonder if you know this. A new birth certificate is issued to the new adoptive parents. BUT; The child or baby's name is the only thing changed as well as the new parents name is on it. ALL the other information such as birth date, time, place, town, etc. remain the same as the original birth certificate. So that does give you some info in case you don't know it. Sometimes, not always, you can check a newspaper for births in the area in same towns from same hospital and may get something that matches. That is if the mother retains the baby after birth and or the parents are still married. Also then you can take the names suspected you find and check the City Directories in the town and also the surrounding area as may not been a hosp. in the smaller town they lived in. There are many more things you can do but each case can be different so a searcher or helper needs to know all pertinent facts to know where and what should be the easiest things to do first and in order. So even tho you were b in Seattle, Wa. your mother or parents could have lived in any of the suburbs surrounding there as same with other's. I have helped many find their lost person from many ways, adoption ; moved, disappearance, remarried etc. willma@sprynet.com ----- Original Message ----- From: <rtoler45@hotmail.com> To: <WASHINGTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2005 3:45 PM Subject: [WASHINGTON-L] Baby Girl Born 11-05-53 in Seattle Washington Looking for Father > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.msn.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/5541/CCC.2ACE/2962 > > Message Board Post: > > I was born to Dolores Sanders, maiden name Ottolino at the King County Hospital. Boy, and HOW Right you are Ron; Many newbe's don't seem to understand , you have to have a starting point with a name dates and places. Then check censuses, then go on. Just putting a surname doesn't get it. So many surnames are so common now and so plentiful in ant number of nationalities as well. I just had the first name of my Grt GRt Grandmother, Mahala and her spouse name Wm. Rooks. and their dau. Millie, my grandmother and a state. So I went to the census. Got my start. Thanks for the many helpers on Computer as I made a message and posted it on Missouri site. I had looked for several years by mail and not founds her but did get some letters which I couldn't connect. My mothers maiden name was Ottolino but was Sanders when I was born. So her full maiden name is Dolores Josephine Ottolino. My birthdate is ... ... ... born in King County Hospital, Seattle Washington. I have a list of all men that had red hair visiting or living in Seattle in 1952...no, that won't help. Genealogy begins at home. If your mother is still living, ASK HER FIRST. If not, does she have any living siblings, parents, aunts/uncles, cousins, someone in the family still alive? Does she have any dear old friends, such as high school or college friends that may have information. Have you tried to obtain your birth certificate? Ask anyone/everyone in the family or her friends. If there is a legal freeze on it being released, you can take it to court to have it released. Your children and you need to know of any family medical history on his side. Second, check records. If they lived together in 1952, 53, etc, there may be a record of them living in a residence in Seattle in the Polk City Directories. These Directories are not phone books but listings of persons residing at an address. Have you tried to obtain a birth announcement in the newspaper? They would identify that a baby girl born to Mr. Xx and Mrs. X. Your mothers name went from Ottolino to Sanders. Was this mystery person the Sanders, or was she later married to Sanders? In your childhood, who was she living with? Did your mother ever complain that someone wasn't paying child support? Did your mother ever make comments on your father? So, first, start at home, then obtain records and write down all facts learned, verified or not. Sometimes a verified fact is untrue and a suspected lie is the truth. Historically, the Korean War was going on, your father could have been home on leave from the Army, or was stationed in Washington from some other far US home. It could have been a long term romance with marriage and then divorce; or just a fling; or worse-a criminal act. I'm sure you're aware of the possibilities. Your father may not want anything to do with you or even acknowledge you. Which may be the case if he had known of you and hadn't made contact. Or, he may not even know of your existence. Curiosity is understandable, medical needs are realistic; but do you REALLY want to know. It could be more painful than satisfaction of curiosity. I, and my siblings, have learned recently that we may have an unknown sister. She may or may not have any knowledge of her paternity. We do not wish to attempt to find her, as it may devastate her life. Sometimes, it's better to let the unknowns remain. Ron Bestrom

Hi there, Mary Lou here. I grew up in Duvall, Washington......my husband did as well. I have been reading your emails and when I read you mention Duvall, I went to ask my husband if he heard the Skitrall....he did! I will be typing up an article from the DUVALL CITIZEN newspaper clipping he happens to have. He is quite the Historian when it comes to Duvall and the railroad! His Grandmother was Nellie (Thayer) Miller who came to Duvall in 1902, I believe. She was telling Allen, my hubby, about this fire at their house. It was the worst fire disaster in the town. I will send this, and then hand type the article, as written from the Clipping from 23 July 1915.
