    3. Armistice Day November 11 is the anniversary of the Armistice which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918, ending World War I, after four years of conflict. Armistice means truce. President Woodrow Wilson's original proclaimation issued in 1919 ended with this sentiment: To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation. Veterans Day. After World War II, Amercia's newest veterans needed their day also. In 1954 President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day and called on all citizens to observe November 11 by remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought and to rededicate themselves to promoting PEACE These are just a few of the webpages and resources available ONLINE WEBPAGES FEDERAL http://gravelocator.chome.comcast.net/~suvcw1/em.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 Department of Veterans' Affairs the Grave Locator search engine. http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html The National Archives for requesting service records. www.archives.gov The National Archives main page. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Bestrom" <rbestrom@earthlink.net> Addendum 2 to my post yesterday From our postings, there seems to be difference in data. Your Bygdebok indicates his birth in 1880, the census has 1889. The Bygdebok are known to have errors, but the census has them also. You may ultimately need to review the parish records for Rennebu. I will post your inquiry on the Norway list to see if I can get some info from Norwegian posters. I will look in the digitalarkivet in the emigrant protocols to see if I can find him departing Norway. I did find a Lars Mikkleborg, born 14 June 1889, departing for New York in 1926. If this is the right person, your Lars may have visited Norway in 1926. I'll do more on this person also. Ron

Addendum to my post yesterday I was able to get into the Norwegian 1900 census in the digitalarkivet. I found your Lars living in Rennebu Parish, Sør-Trøndelag Fylke (county). He was living on the Lonke Farm. His full name was Lars Mikkelsen Rokkonæsløk. He was born in 1889. Here is the URL for that census page (make sure you cut and past the entire URL) http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=hentglobal&register=etternavn&pgj=452&teljing=ft1900&filnamn=f01635.wc2&amt=16&funnenr=354 I also found the Rokkonæsløk farm in the same area. From this data, I believe that Mekkel Kristoffersen, born 1864, was the father of your Lars, his mother was Ane Larsdtr born 1869 at Ørkedalen. The siblings of Lars were also present. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f01635.wc2&gardpostnr=150&personpostnr=782&merk=782#ovre

The farm history shows he settled in Seattle, > Washington. Thank you for any help. Eileen, One other list that you should try for any Norwegians, is the Norway List. There are hundreds of us on it from the US, Norway and other countries. It's also a GREAT place to learn about the Norwegian heritage. Here is some info: http://www.rootsweb.com/~norway/NorwayList.htm As far as Lars. You didn't provide a date of birth, or a farm name (unless Rokkenes is that name). That type of information is crucial for identification. Additional searches for him just using first name and DOB could be done. Any other information would also help. For Hågenson: I have a Lars Hogenson, living in Spokane, WA, in the 1920 census. He was born about 1867 in Norway. The census images does not have his emigration year. The Washington death Index shows, probably the same one, age 83, death on 7 Jan 1950. There are a number of Haagensen, Haagenson also in the US. With a DOB, one might be him. For Rokkenes. Found none using that name and Soundex. For Mikkelson (MikkelsEn): Have a Lars Andreas MikkelsEn ("E" vs "O") in the World War I Draft Registration Cards. He was living in Seattle, born in Norway on February 28, 1884. He was not a US citizen, but was a declarant, indicating his intent. He was in the Fish Business. His nearest relative was his brother Berent Mikkelsen in the "Mad Cure Sanitorium, Shacopel, Minn. He was residing in the Travellers Hotel, Yesler Ave, Seattl. Have a Lars Mikkelson, living in Seattle in the 1930 census, born in Norway about 1894. Did your Lars emigrate with parents or other family? This one would have only been 6 in 1900. This one is married to Judith and had two children. A Lars Michaelsen was found on the Washington Death Index, death on 19 Oct 1973 in Colville, WA. This happens to be my old home town. If this Lars is the correct one, depending on his DOB being late enough to the age he might have been in 1973, I did know a Rolf Michaelsen, that may be related. I found this person on the Social Security Death index, born 22 July 1887, so probably not the right one, unless he emigrated at 13. I was going to try to find him and his farm on the Norway census via the Digitalarkivet, but that database system is currently down. I also tried other Norwegian farm databases but was unsuccessful I did find a lars Rokkenes in Sor Trondelag, Norway...but this one was born on 2 Jan 1688 (year is correct at 1688). But, I'm assuming this is his farm name. Ron
