Hello everyone, Today in the mail I received some long awaited information. It answers some questions but creates others. I received the death record( 1968) of my great uncle EDWARD HARSON. It verifies that my great grandb=mother is his sister and gives the location of their brother ARNOLD HARSON as CENTRALIA. WASHINGTON. It gives a daughter's name of Phyllis COMONONT in Taholah and that he had 7 great grandchildren at the time of his death. My problem, Arnold Harson is not on the SSDI and I do not know if he was alive or not at the time. Also I can not through the phone listings find any record of his daughter. I now know that there are relatives who are his descendents probably still in Washington but I don't know how to find them. Any suggestions? Does anyone by any chance know a lady by the name of Phyllis Comonont whose maiden name was HARSON? Any suggestions are appreciated. Judi
This was posted on a couple of genealogy lists. In the spirit of trying to help kin be found, I'm forwarding to the list. Shirley ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This comes straight from the Associated Press. If you know of this family, please pass it on to them. VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Clark County Clerk JoAnne McBride wants to solve the mystery of a tattered, yellowed envelope that's been in her office for the past decade. The envelope, containing certificates of U.S. citizenship for Peter and Ida Hendrickson, was sent out by registered mail on Jan. 23, 1946, just 15 days after the couple officially became citizens. But it never found the Hendricksons. It came back to the clerk's office March 24, 1988, 42 years after it was mailed, stamped undeliverable with a handwritten note, "deceased." Now, Ms. McBride is making a last effort to track down the Hendricksons, or any of their descendants, before sending the documents to Olympia where they will be archived and stored on a shelf somewhere. "I don't know if they had children, but somebody knows about them. I've held onto this hoping to hear something," she said. "It's somebody's heritage, and if we can't find them, it will be sad." She doesn't know much about the Finnish couple. Judging by their photographs and descriptions, Peter Hendrickson was a rawboned 58 years old with a ruddy complexion, thinning hair and piercing gray eyes. His wife, Ida, was a dumpling-faced, blue-eyed matron of 60. Both were part of a tide of Scandinavians who immigrated to north Clark County earlier in the century. In 1946, they lived at Route 2 Box 64 in Battle Ground, or so the documents said. The certificates were produced by the federal Department of Justice, stamped with the state seal and signed by then-County Clerk Wilma Schmidt. Intrigued, and wanting the family to have the documents, Ms. McBride called several Hendricksons in the Clark County phone book with no success. Nobody had heard of Peter and Ida. Reporters at The (Vancouver) Columbian had similar bad luck. The names didn't ring a bell for Bill Bergren, a longtime member of the Finnish community in Hockinson, who was contacted by The Columbian. Or for Wally Risto, also a longtime resident of Finnish background. Or for Rusty Eino Erkkila, a 90-year-old Vancouver Finn. "There might have been some Hendricksons in Battle Ground, but I didn't know them," he said. Clyde Simonson, a clerk at the Battle Ground Post Office, himself a Finn, had some theories about how mail gets lost. "Sometimes it gets stuck under a piece of machinery or in a mailbag that gets tossed aside," he said. But he hadn't heard of the Hendricksons either, though he mentioned an Ann Hendrickson, who for many years lived in the Ridgefield area and now lives in Battle Ground. "I know an Ida Hendrickson," Ann Hendrickson said by telephone, "but she lives in Michigan. Never lived here as far as I know." --- Anyone with information about the couple may contact Clark County Clerk JoAnne McBride at (360)699-2287. Copyright © 1998 The Register-Guard

Hello All I'm looking for information re: BARBER'S in Lacey/Olympia area. My grandfather was Jack G.Barber, born 1909 TX. When he was 2 he and his family came by covered wagon to WA state. My grandfather, Jack, never talked about his boyhood or his parents, and all i've been left with is bits and pieces of oral history. Jack's parents were Edward BARBER born abt.1880 (where? possibly NY) his mother was Alice GREEN born abt 1880 (where?) and he had a sister Lois (SOWERS) born 1907. Jack's parents divorced shortly after arriving from TX, and apparently his father, Edward left for CA. I know that Edward's brother lived in Shelton, his name was George BARBER and it was said George was born in Yonkers, NY. George helped raise my grandfather. Is anyone researching BARBER/GREEN lines? I could use any sorts of help as most of my starts have been stopped short. Thanks for your time. Brenda, Where do you live? Did you go to the State Archives in Bellingham? I'm researching my Everett and Friend surnames and both families were in Bellingham early. My Friends came from West Virginia in about 1903. My Dad and I went to the State Archives a year or two ago and it was great! They had old maps that showed homeowners names, tons of old, old books, city directories and it seems like there was a box that had either birth or death records. The room we went in was secured. They locked up things like purses and briefcases although they let you have paper and pens or whatever and you have to buzz someone when you want out. There were also old books with indexes to land records. I've been wanting to get up to the museum and the Whatcom Co courthouse but like you have a difficult time getting away from the kids. I live in Seattle and have been trying to figure out how I can get even a day in Bellingham to research. Cheryl
Hello, again! Friday afternoon on the second day of my 3-day getaway from the kids, I drove to Bellingham, WA and spent the day at the library, courthouse and History Museum (including the Archives department upstairs!) Then earlier today I spent the whole day at the Tacoma FHC and the downtown Tacoma Public Library, and this is what I found (a LITTLE information and a LOT of questions!): In the 1890 New Whatcom City Directory: DAWSON, Hannah I, restaurant, C bet 14th and 15th, res same (Okay, so where was Thomas? What was the name of this restaurant? Did she own it or did she only live and work there?) In the 1891 New Whatcom City Directory: DAWSON, T. M., mason (Is THIS my Thomas DAWSON?? This is the only DAWSON with a T other than his son Thomas Schuyler DAWSON in the City Directories at least until 1906) In the 1900 Federal Census for Whatcom County: Dawson, Thos, hoh, white, male, b. Dec 1875, 24yrs, widowed, birth state IA, father's bs OH, mother's bs IA, occ. Salesman Depate? DAWSON, Jeraldine?, daughter, white, female, b. Jun 1896, 3yrs, single, bs WA, fbs IA, mbs IA DAWSON, Hannah I, mother, white, female, b. Nov 1842, 57yrs., widowed, # of kids ?, # of kids living 5, bs IA, fbs CT, mbs VA (okay, so Thomas Sr. was apparently dead by 1900, but where is he buried?? Hannah states that she has 5 children living in 1900?? I know of 3, who are the other two?? Hannah's death announcement in the paper in August of 1901 only states that she died at the home of her son Schuyler from LaGrippe which she contracted in the winter of 1900-1901. No other genealogical info. I couldn't read Thomas' daughter's name in the Census, but I knew from his obituary that he had a daughter named Geraldine who married a man named CARLSON, and the writing looked like Jeraldine). In another City Directory for Bellingham (ca 1916) there is a Harry DAWSON listed as the owner of a restaurant on C St. Could this Harry DAWSON be a child of Thomas & Hannah DAWSON? I am leaning toward the possibility that Hannah's maiden name was SCHUYLER. Her son Thomas had the middle name Schuyler, and her daughter Arminta Mary named her oldest son Arthur Schuyler WATSON. I was able to check the index for the 1850 Federal Census for the State of Iowa, and I found only ONE Schuyler family! A William SCHUYLER of Van Buren County (the city was listed as Village, I forgot to write the page number). Does anyone have access to the 1850 Federal Census for Van Buren County, Iowa? I don't because I'm home now, and the local library here has very little information available and I can't get to a FHC without travelling 80 miles each way. :-( I'd LOVE to find out if this William SCHUYLER had a daughter named Hannah who was approximately 7 years old in the 1850 Census. Oh yeah, I don't know about all counties, but at least Gray's Harbor and Whatcom Counties told me that I have to write to Olympia to see if there is a death certificate for Hannah. Okay, so here is the info I have on Thomas & Hannah Isabel DAWSON: Thomas DAWSON b. OH (prob. ca 1842) m. bef. Nov 1866 (prob. in IA) to Hannah Isabel (poss. SCHUYLER) who was b. Nov 1842 in IA The children I have: 1. Arminta Mary DAWSON b. 10 Nov 1866 in W. Branch, Cedar Co, IA; d. 21 Feb 1938 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co, WA; m. 17 Jun 1891 (I thought in Bellingham, but the courthouse had no record of it) to Henry Robinson WATSON (s/o Robert & Marguerite WATSON) b. 7 Jun 1862 in Co. Durham, England; d. 23 Mar 1941 in Aberdeen, Gray's Harbor Co, WA. Their children: Grace (b&d 1892); Arthur Schuyler (b. 1893, m. ???, d. in Seattle); Mary Inez (b. abt 1895, m. William BELL, d. Ketchikan or Washington State); Clara Isabel (b. Aug 1900, m. Dewey JOHNSON, d. 1969 in Aberdeen, WA); Henry Edmund (b. 1902, m. ???, d. in Seattle?); and Robert WATSON (b&d 1908). 2. Viola May DAWSON b. 12 Mar 1869 in Maxwell, Story Co, IA; 30 Dec 1944 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co, WA; m. William H. BURGESS b. 13 Oct 1866 in England; d. 23 Oct 1940 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co, WA. Their children: Lucile (b. 1895 in B'ham, m. Charles ANDREEN, d. 1977 in B'ham); u/n infant (d. Jan 1898); Velma (b. 1899 in B'ham, m. Aubry DEETER?, d. 1988 in B'ham); and Clarence BURGESS (b. 1893 in B'ham, m. ???, d. 1983 in B'ham). 3. Thomas Schuyler DAWSON b. 4 Dec 1874 (or 1875) in Jones Co, IA; d. 1939 in Wenatchee, Chelan Co, WA; m1. 1895 in Bellingham to Ella Parker who died abt 1898; m2. 1900 in Bellingham to Etta DOWNS b. 19 Feb 1867 in WI; d. 1 Jun 1937 in Bellingham, Whatcom Co, WA. Child of Thomas & Ella: Geraldine B. DAWSON (b. Jun 1896 in B'ham, m. ? CARLSON & living in Palo Alto, CA in 1939). Children of Thomas & Etta: George B. (b. aft 1900 & living in San Francisco, CA in 1939); and an unnamed daughter married to John WILKINSON and living in Wenatchee, Chelan Co, WA in 1939. Can someone PLEASE help?!?! The family should be listed in the Iowa Federal Census for 1870 and 1880, but I have no idea where. Thank you!! Brenda Hbert
