    1. [WASHINGTON-L] BOSWELL/Spokane
    2. Hi, all-- I'm new to the list and am a professional genealogist in Virginia. I have some need for personal research in Washington. My grandmother, Mary Selina BOSWELL, was reportedly born in Spokane falls, WA. Her birthdate is 2/14/1893. Her parents were Daniel Floyd BOSWELL and Nannie Morgan Gold BOSWELL, who were married in Bunker Hill, WV in 1892. They were in Washington only a few years--maybe 4. The family story goes that Daniel was hired as an Indian Agent, but I can find no record of this and you know how "family stories' often go. I am looking for some kind of birth record for my grandmother, Mary Selina BOSWELL, b. 2/14/1893. It is my understanding that there are birth records available from 1890 for Spokane County. I will be willing to exchange Virginia research for Washington research. Many thanks, Meg

    3. OAK GROVE CHUCH cont. #2 These same letters noted that John Carol (sic0 (Carroll) was ordained in the Methodist Church 24 August 1844. Presumably this was Oak Grove. Oak Grove Church was located in the SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Section 10, Township 6 North Range 21 West. The church yard actually was just over the line in Section 9. Bordering its southern edge was Pole Creek. This land was filed by James Sanner Jones and his family in 1841. People often lived on land without filing for years, since the land office was then in Clarksville, ArkansasJust over in Section 9, Phillip Delph resided. He had got his land as Military Bounty while serving with the Second Tennessee Volunteers, Richardson County Militia. Also in Section 9 lived Macon Sibiscus Cox, a Methodist of long standing in Tennessee. In Section 11, Jacob Cowger, a Methodist from Oxford, Mississippi, brought his family early. From Gallatin, Tennessee, Henry Gambling and his son in law, Thomas J. Daniels came as Methodist and leaders to contribute their efforts to Christianity. In the spring of 1847, W. L. Gutherie was appointed to te Dardanelle circuit. In 1851, the Rev. J. P. Cole, was assigned tot he circuit, with Mt. Zion, _t. Pisgah and Lake View. By 1859, _____Davis was the Circuit Rider to Oak Grove and Crossroads. This latter church was commonly known as Fields Chapel. Mrs. Lizzie Morgan recalls having attended church here in 1893. A man named Crow while very old showed me writing of the finist penmanship which he _aid he learned while attending school in this old church. He had come from Prairie View to this church. All that remains of the original church is a pile of stone and 61 unmarked graves. It is possible there may be more. Unknown now they may be to mortal man, but their names are indellibly inscribed in the Eternal Book of Life. The author is unknown, this was in the papers of M. V. Adney, grandfather of Julius Adney. The papers are in the possession of Julius and Maxine Carrel Adney. <continued>

    3. So Many of you asked me to do a look up on the Oak Grove Church I decided to send it all out to the list. It will be in 4 different parts because it is 3 pages typed. This church is in Dardanelle, Yell County AR. Good luck! OAK GROVE CHURCH Joseph B. Annis held the office of Deacon in the Methodist Church of Johnson and Yell Counties by appointment of the Little Rock Conference 5 November 1837. He is the first of the Methodist Denomination to record marriages in the county. Annis while serving as a Circuit Rider ministered to a congregation in Brearly Cemetery. It appears that the building place was used as a school house and referred to as the Apple Tree. Samuel H. Balch, the Presbyterian minister, also used the place to conduct services in 1841. John Cowles conducted a rivival on the Riley Creek in 1830 and Baptised several Rileys. This is the first reference I found of the Methodist being organized in this county. Cowles married people from all sections of the county and may have preached over a large circuit. In 1831 John Wirsfield an Englishman taught school and preached for Logan and Riley families. Up to this time marriages were performed nad not fully recognized or questioned whether the preacher was a member of a recognized church. Prior to 3 September 1841 religion had no formal recognition in Yell County. On this first known marriage performed and recorded by a minister of God was 3 June 1841, when Robert Muney and Clarisa Travis were united in marriage by John Crutchfield, with authority to perform marriages granted by James Osgood Andrews. Another Methodist Minister was Jackson Graham, who signed as minister of God 24 August 1841, with authority to perform marriages by Biship Andrews. Little is known of Malachai Skaggs, but he performed services 19 July 1841 at the Methodist Church, Magazine Township. I have no record of but two churches being in Magazine Township, Oak Grove and Chickalah. Joseph B. Annis appeared on the field at Dardanelle, 1 January 1842. Rev. Annis had been here for some time for we find that he married T. N. Floyd and Sabina Connaly 1 December 1841. It can only be assumed that the church at Dardanelle, was organized on that date. He served as Senior Deacon in the first Masonic Lodge to be organized in Dardanelle in 1846. >From letters once the property of Mrs. Pearl Hayden, the following was found. "James Dunn Adney, ordained as Minister, Oak Grove Methodist Church, 1 January 1844". Mr. Adney stated his decision for the ministry was because of the influence on his life of his Christian mother. No statement was made concerning who gave the charge or the examination. <continued>

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] question
    2. judi
    3. Hi! I have two questions for all of you. The first one is probably real simple. DOes a birth index or anything exist for Washington at the FHC coveribg the 1920's &1930's? Second is a request for everyone's opinion. Recently my research took me to Washington and my Greatgrandmothers brother Edward HARSOn who live in Aberdeen, I have found his death certificate, his mortuary and his obit along with the mortuary record of his wife Susanna and her obit. Several of these sources list PHYLLIS COMENOUT (of Taholah) as their Granddaughter. I have Phyllis's mortuary record and a family tree from the Confederate Tribes of Siletz Indians. My problem is her parents are lists as Maxwell Collins and Kathleen Dick on one source and Zelda Dick on another source, neither parent is a HARSON. I am sure this is the correct woman because the number of greatchildren even matchs the number of children she had and my understanding is that Taholah is not that large so there should not be multiple people with the same name. I am waiting for Phylliss's birth record to come from Oregon but I guess I am a little impatient. If the birth record still don't give me the Harson name what should I try next? How can I find the person that links my Edward and Susanna to this person Phyllis Comenout listed as their granddaughter. The family tree I recieved form the Confederation lists only her mothers name with no grandparents and then lists her father line further back. I suspect that the mother is the daughter of one of my Harson's either from a possible first marriage of Susanna or perhaps the name Dick is not a maiden name but a second marriage name. Any help? ANy suggestions? Judi

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] DAWSON Commonwealth War Grave list on-line
    2. James W. Dawson
    3. I just thought that I would let everyone know that there now exists a complete listing of all the Dawsons who fought and died in the service of the armies of the British Commonwealth during the First and Second World Wars at http://www.globalserve.net/~dawson/projects.htm . There were 1,432 Dawsons who fought and died either while in the service of their countries during the First World War and Second World Wars or who as civilians died as a result of the various conflicts. It might be of interest to those pursuing the genealogy of Dawsons from America that a number of American Dawsons are also listed here, since they enlisted in a Commonwealth army prior to the United States entering either world war. I have organized the listings intially by the cemeteries in which they are buried, but will in the next week or so list the individuals alphabetically, then by country or origin and then by rank. These records will be of interest since they often aside from listing the individuals enlistment number and regiment, they also frequently include the addresses of the next of kin. The second phase of this project will document the attestation papers, medical histories, service records, etc. of Canadian Dawsons since these are easier for me to acquire. I hope that you find this to be a useful addition to the Dawson Family History Project site. 3. Hi Don, I live in Seattle and do alot of genealogical research. You have to go to the Seattle Public Library for one! They have a great genealogy section on the first floor and they do have the old phone books in there. The address is 1000 4th Avenue (4th and Madison). Their phone number is 206-386-4636. The King County Courthouse also on 4th Avenue downtown has birth certificates for all people born in King County since 1890 and all other Washington Counties since 1950. Their phone number is 206-296-4769. Cheryl

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] SEATTLE VISIT
    2. Donald B Craig
    3. Hi All... My name is Don Craig. I am making a special trip to Seattle to do some family genealogy and visit with my family. I lived in your great city for 25 years back in the 60's. I was born in Providence Hospital in Seattle. I was hoping that some good soul would help me figure out where I can find the City addresses for genealogy records in the area. I will be staying in Bellevue. 1. Where would I find Polk City directories for Seattle, Tacoma and Spokane, etc? 2. Where are the Federal Census records? 3. Where are the Washington State Census records? 4. Where would I find birth, death and divorce records. Is there an easy way to get these records if you go there in person? 5. Where might I find information on all the folks who went to Alaska for the gold rush? 6. Where are the Grade school and High school records? Are they open to the public? 7. Where would I find Catholic Church school records. Are they open to the public? 8. ECT,ECT,ECT Thanks a bunch, Don... 1. [WASHINGTON-L] Looking for Thomas or Emery Hunt
    2. Jeff
    3. I am looking for information regarding a Thomas Emery Hunt who was born about 1849 in Bureau Co. Illinois. He was known to use both Thomas and Emery as a first name. His father's name is believed to be Abel Hunt, whom died in 1854 in Bureau Co. Illinois. His mother is believed to be Margaret Finley, whom later married a George Hunt sometime between 1854 and 1857. Thomas Hunt had one brother, named James before Abel's death and several step brothers/sisters after George married Margaret. About 1870, Thomas married Mary Adeline and had three children. These are listed in the 1880 census of Bureau Co. Illinois as Elbert (age 7), Ethleen (age 5) and Elmer (age 1). Sometime afterwards Thomas is believed to have left the family (reasons unknown) and likely arrived in Seattle, Washington where it is believed he may have resided from the 1890s to the early 1900s. Any information regarding Thomas Emery Hunt, his family or any possible descendants not described above would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Jeff Hunt

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] Murder 1882
    2. I am researching the murder of John Westfall. He was shot by A.J. "Jack" Vincent, his brother in law, on 4 January, 1882, in a bar in Toledo, Washington. Westfall died in Portland Oregon several months later, on 7 October 1882. Vincent was tried for 1st degree murder. On 11 january 1883 he was in court. He was found not guilty of 1st degree murder on 2 February 1883 BUT he was found guilty of 2nd degree murder. He was discharged from custody on 24 September 1883. Vincent was also accused of assault with a deadly weapon while living in Cowlitz County in 1880. I am mostly interested in Vincent info but westfall info would be helpful, too. I have the court records of the murder for Vincent but I would like to flesh out the story with accounts of the murder and trial from the newspapers. Does anyone have any ideas of where I could start? I do not know if Vincent died in Washington state. He did live in Lewis County for awhile mailto:misha@memes.com

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] Seattle, Washington Bonnie Leach or Leech
    2. Julianne Presson
    3. I am looking for any information on a Bonnie Leach who lived in the Seattle area during the 1940. She had a child (son) when she was 14 (in 1948) and another a year or so later. A year or so after the second child was born she moved to Chicago with a man called Smoky she married. Bonnie had three other children and died of breast cancer when she was 28. Bonnie was also legally blind and went to a School for the blind. She lived her last few years in the Seattle area in or around Kirkland, WA. This is all the information I have on Bonnie Leach, other than knowing she has family in the Seattle area and the second son came looking for the first born several years ago to meet him. I am trying to put together the family genealogy and Bonnie Leach was my children's grandmother. Julianne Presson earthwrks@uswest.net
