    1. [WASHINGTON-L] Miss Georgia WARD
    2. Anne Comer
    3. Some months ago I purchased an old picture frame to reuse for some of my ancestor photos that I hang on my wall. But this frame had an interesting item in it that I thought someone might want to claim. So, since it had a connection to Vicksburg, Mississippi I put an advertisement in the Warren County, Miss. Gen-Web page hoping that someone would recognize the name. No one from there has responded so here it is for the folks of Washington to look over. If you recognize Miss Georgia please let me know. ******************************************** December 18 1997, Anne Comer, comerslr@halcyon.com WARD -- Found, first communion certificate for Miss Georgia WARD, in an antique store in Tacoma, Washington. Georgia received her first Communion in St. Mary's Chruch, Vicksburg, WARREN County, Mississippi on the eighth day of April 1923. I do not know the usual age for a young person to receive first communion but suppose Miss Georgia WARD may have been born in about 1913 or so. Anyone able to connect to this person please contact me personally by e-mail. I would be delighted for this lovely item to return to a family member. ******************************************** Anne Mailto:comerslr@halcyon.com

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] Civil War Veteran's Rolls question
    2. BrenHebert
    3. I've been looking for information on my gr-gr-gr grandfather Thomas Martin Van Buren DAWSON who moved his family from Iowa to Whatcom County, WA. The family arrived in Bellingham ca. 1888 or 1889 (I could not find them in the 1889 Washington Territorial Census for Whatcom County), and he was listed in the 1891 city directory as "T.M. DAWSON" a mason with no address listed. His wife was listed as living at a restaurant on C Street. My gr-gr-gr grandparents had a son named William W. DAWSON in Dec 1860 and a daughter in Nov 1866. I don't know if they had any children between those two, if they did they probably had one who died before 1880 when I found them in the Jones County, IA Census. The gap of 6 years between the first two children, though, makes me wonder if Thomas may have served in the Civil War. If he had served in the C.W., it would have been with a regiment from Iowa. Would be be listed in the Veteran's Rolls of 1890 for Whatcom County, WA? Is there one available on microfilm? Thank you! Brenda Hbert

    3. Hello all, Puget Sound Genealogical Society's web site has been online for over a year now and I felt it was time to improve it. Just today I uploaded new pages. The basic information is still there but it is in a new format, and additional information has been added. Please take a moment and look it over (the url is below). If you find any errors or obvious problems with it, please don't hesitate to send a note to the webmaster. And, for everyone's information, Thelma Gurske is the PSGS Corresponding Secretary and Genealogist. If you have any requests for research (in Kitsap County only), she is at gurske@ix.netcom.com and ready to help. I will be out of town for the next four weeks but will have access to my email. Of course, I went immediately to Illinois and Minnesota and the counties of my grandparents. Minneapolis had 164,000 residents, the state had 1,301,826 residents. Illinois had 3,826,351 residents, and Chicago was host to 1,438,010 of them. The atlas is a joy to read. Elaine

    1. [WASHINGTON-L] DAWSON, Thomas & HOSFORD, Hannah & descendants
    2. BrenHebert
    3. Do you know this family?? I have included the sources I have found which have given me clues about my family. I'd love to hear from anyone researching this same family or who might be able to help me find more information about them! Thanks! Thomas M. V. DAWSON was b. abt 1838 in Hancock Co, OH, and d. aft 1891 in Whatcom Co, WA. (his name: Book of Story County Marriages published by the Iowa State Genealogical Society, and death certificate of William W. Dawson; year of birth: Jones Co, IA 1880 Federal Census; place of birth: death cert. of Wm. W. Dawson; year of death: last seen in city directories in Whatcom Co, WA in 1891). His parents may have been both born in Virginia (1880 Federal Census). He married Hannah Isabel HOSFORD on 27 Jan 1859 in Story Co, IA (Book of Story Co, IA marriages). Occupations: farmer, and mason (1880 Census, 1891 New Whatcom City Directoy). This family may have left Iowa abt 1887 and gone to California before arriving in Whatcom County, WA abt. 1888 or 1889 (obit of Thomas Schuyler). There is no information I have been able to find in Whatcom Co, WA which states the exact date he died. Hannah Isabel HOSFORD was b. in Aug, 1842 in Iowa (Jones Co, IA 1880 Federal Census; Bellingham, WA 1900 Federal Census; death cert. of Wm. W. Dawson) and she d. 6 Aug 1901 in Bellingham from LaGrippe (her obit). She lived with her widowed son, Thomas Schuyler in 1900 and 1901 (1900 Federal Census & her obit). She ran a restaurant on C St. at one time (1890 Whatcom City Directory). Her father may have been born in CT and mother may have been born in VA (1880 Federal Census and 1900 Federal Census). In 1900 Federal Census she states that she had 8 children; 5 of whom were living at the time. So, I am still missing one child's name, and information on either Manda, Nona or Archie as an adult. Their children were as follows: 1. William W. b. 1 Dec 1860 in Linn Co, IA (his death cert.), d. 27 Jun 1928 in Bellingham, WA (death cert.) of heart failure previously undetected (d.c.). He was the foreman of a steel gang on the railroad, but unemployed at the time of his death. His wife was a Laura A. (maiden name unknown). They may have been divorced at the time of his death (d.c.). He was living with Arminta Mary at the time of his death. I just found this gentleman, so I've just begun looking through the Censuses and other records in Whatcom County, WA for information on him and his family. 2. Arminta Mary (she signed her name Mary A.) was b. 10 Nov 1866, possibly in W. Branch, IA, but I haven't confirmed that yet (waiting to get her death cert.), she d. 21 Feb 1938 in Bellingham, WA (her obit). She married Henry Robinson WATSON on 17 Jun 1891, I think in Bellingham, but the Courthouse didn't have a record of it. Henry WATSON was b. 7 Jul 1861 in Co. Durham, England to Robert & Marguerite WATSON (date of birth: his death cert; place of birth and parents' names: History of Whatcom County); he d. 23 Mar 1941 in Aberdeen, WA where he was living with Clara WATSON JOHNSON (his obit; death cert; my grandmother, daughter of Clara WATSON JOHNSON). They had the following children: Grace b. & d. 1892 in Bellingham, WA (History of Whatcom County; Bayview Cemetery Records); Arthur Schuyler b. abt 1893 in Bellingham, WA, married and lived in the Seattle, WA area. 3. Meg..........I'm not at home now so don't have the address, but you need to call the WA STATE ARCHIVES...in Olympia or their EASTERN DIVISION at Cheney WA. David Hasting's is the Chief Archivists in Olympia and Susan Beemer is the gal to talk to in Cheney. If you want to wait a week....I'll be home and give you their phone numbers and addresses. Susan has an email address too. I have some need for personal research in Washington. My grandmother, Mary Selina BOSWELL, was reportedly born in Spokane falls, WA. Her birthdate is 2/14/1893. Her parents were Daniel Floyd BOSWELL and Nannie Morgan Gold BOSWELL, who were married in Bunker Hill, WV in 1892. They were in Washington only a few years--maybe 4. The family story goes that Daniel was hired as an Indian Agent, but I can find no record of this and you know how "family stories' often go. I am looking for some kind of birth record for my grandmother, Mary Selina BOSWELL, b. 2/14/1893. It is my understanding that there are birth records available from 1890 for Spokane County. I will be willing to exchange Virginia research for Washington research. Many thanks, Meg>>

    3. Finally -- a query I can possibly help with!! I'm a native Washingtonian and last year made a number of calls to ascertain getting death records of kin back to 1903. (Please contact the agencies directly for current fees.) The WASH. STATE CENTER FOR HEALTH STATISTICS in Olympia (our state capitol) has death records from July 1, 1907, to the present. For death records prior to that date, contact the WASHINGTON STATE LIBRARY in Olympia at 360-753-5590 (Washington NW Room) or 360-753-3087. They need date of death or place. Their mailing address is P.O. Box 9709, Olympia, WA 98507. They do not have all records on file. The recording requirement was quite sporadic from the beginning of statehood (1889) for a number of decades. This makes tracking down a death certificate a real challenge in some cases. The WASHINGTON STATE ARCHIVES has a death index (only, no records) prior to 1907. Their phone is 360-586-1492. Once you have the date of death (DOD) and have determined that the STATE has the record, you can request a certified copy of the death certificate. Cost is $11, and delivery is approx 5 weeks. (They must by law only provide a certified copy. No xeroxing permitted, so no cheaper way to do this.) Call 360-753-5936 for instructions. However, in many cases the records remain with the local jurisdiction (city or county). For example, in Spokane County, the City of Spokane has death records from 1891 to the present (sporadic), but the County has records only 1961 to the present. SPOKANE COUNTY: Spokane County Health District has city records 1891-present, and county records 1961-present. The phone number for Vital Statistics is 509-324-1523. Their address is W. 1101 College Ave., Spokane, WA 99201 Spokane County Auditor's Office has records 1890-1907. Their phone is 509-456-2271, and the address is 1116 W. Broadway, Spokane, WA 99260. A search is $8, a registered copy of the record is $1. Name, date of death and any other available info should be provided when submitting a request. Interesting note: For decades, county Health Departments kept death records. However, while making phone calls last year I learned that responsibility has transferred to county Auditors' Offices. It may be worthwhile to contact both in the county you're researching.
