Mason,You should be able to trace both the studio and the home of Vincent SURRY through the extensive collection of old city directories that the Seattle Public Library has in the genealogy area on the shelves. Perhaps they can advise who would do a lookup if they are not able. Contact the genalogy section of the library through their email service. Hi Louise, Since the ad is from 1888, W. T. probably means Washington Territory. Rockford is in Spokane County. I have a professional family portrait of my grandmother's family taken outdoors at their Stevens County farm about 1910, with everybody all dressed up (neckties, etc.) and posed formally in front of the house. By about 1920, though, my grandma had a box Brownie (cardboard case) that she used throughout her life, even though her sons kept giving her newer fancier cameras. As a matter of fact, there are still itinerant photographers traveling around to small towns. For instance, just a few years ago, there was a photographer set up for a week or so at the variety store in Duvall, offering packages pretty much like at Sears or Penney's. "Have your Picture taken while in good health" was a reminder of the old funeral portraits of deceased children. Looking for any information re 'Surry Photo Studio' which was in operation in the 1920s and 1930s in Seattle. It was owned and operated by Vincent Surry (b. 1867 in Sussex). I have some of his work (old photos). His wife was Blanche; his children - Lorice, Oswald (b. May 1901), and Dorothy. Any information re its location in Seattle, years of operation, the ownership, who might have bought them out, where I can find information - would be greatly appreciated. The Surrys were my mother's family. There were Surrys still in Seattle during the mid-1950s. Help? B. Manson Edmonton Alberta Canada

Good Morning, I have recently begun research on my paternal grandfather and have very little information. I have a trip planned to the NARA in Seattle next week and have a question regarding Soundex for Federal Census. If my grandfather was not a head of household at the time of the census and only a member of the household, will I still be able to locate his surname (if it is different from the rest) or are these lookups only for the HOH?? Thank you in advance, Colleen searching: CHURCH, MCQUIGG, BASS

I forgot to add that if you are looking for an old birth record in WA State.....you might need to know that they have at the Archives in Olympia what they call Late Recorded Births. It was very common in the late 1800's to record a birth later.....and sometimes much later after it occured. Remember that many people were farmers and they didn't or couldn't get things recorded immediatley......Most children were born at home......... xxxxxxxxo Louise King

The place is Rosalia Washington, Whitman County. The time is February of 1884. My grandpa Celestin Schurra was 26 years old. He had already filed an intention to become a citizen of the US in 1883 which was necessary to be able to homestead and get a US Land Patent. He listed his occupation as a farmer and blacksmith. He had on file a Timber culture filing. The discription of the land was of rolling prairies which he intended to use for farming. In order to homestead you had to live on the property and not be absent from it for any length of time. He stated I have been absent once in a while to Cheney for provisions and purpose of selling my crop. Also to the mountains for wood. He and Nellie had (my grandma) only one child at this time. Oscar Schurra, born 1885, the first white baby to be born in Rosalia, Washington Territory. My dad Henry Aphonse Schurra would be born Dec. 28, 1888, just one year before Washington became a State. (11 childen in the family) When asked if his family resided on this claim he replied: They have. They moved on the land in June 1884 and actually reside they are there still. I built the house myself and it is habitable at all times. This is my granddads own description of the house he built and what he owned: It is a half frame house 12x18, 12 feet high, boxed on inside and papered. I intend to put rustic on the outside this year. It has 2 doors, 2 windows, a stove pipe for flue and it is worth $200. Barn 30x30 about $100. Grainery 12x12, $45. fencing about $300 it encloses about 80 acres and 50 acres breaking worth about $250. the total value of all improvements is about $900. I own 1 wagon, 2 plows, furrow, a sod cutter, I have owned part of them since 1884. 2 mules, 2 mares, 1 cayouse horse, 3 colts, 2 cows, 7 hogs, 4 calves, 30 chickens, 2 cats, 1 dog. Chairs, cookstove, table, cupboard, bedstead, bedding, dishes, cooking utensil. I have had most of them here since 1884. I have two cayouse ponys that strayed away. I raised crops 2 seasons, wheat, oats and barley. In 1885 I raised wheat oats. 190 bushels wheat & 30 bushels oats and cut 8 to10 acres to hay. I have about 40 acres prepared for crop next season I have a small blacksmith shop on the land. I have worked only for myself In 1885 I paid something over $5.00 for Whitman County taxes and in 1886 $6.10 ____________________________________________ I have grandpa Celestin's signature on two of these papers from the National Archives. You can see by the above what kind of information you can get by having an ancestor's Homestead papers. Pretty neat. xxxxxxxxo Louise Schurra King La Jolla, Ca
SOME of this below is listed under the WA gen Web.......It is correct except that I'm not sure if the County Auditor has birth and death records this early. In Whitman County I got nothing for the early years......I had to go to the State Archives in Olympia to get them for the year 1887, and then they are not indexed but will look up the name for you if you have the correct County......and town. TO get Birth & Death Records Write to: Office of the Auditor Whitman County P.O. Box 350 Colfax WA 99111 1874 to present---------well maybe!!!!!!!! Now the next is VERY important. If your ancestors homesteaded......you WANT to get those records. In order to find out where they homesteaded you write to the same address above and ask them them to search deed records 1883-1900 under the name of XXXXXXX and state whether buyer or seller). Fees for searching records: $8 per hour per name plus $1 per page per document. when I did the above I did not state buyer or seller. I just told them I wanted EVERY DEED RECORD they had on my grandfather. I asked them to search for the years 1890 to 1900. I got 22 records! Amazing isn't it? The cost was about $22.00 and worth every penny. Now......to have these records make any sense......you probably need to get plat maps of Whitman County where you ancestors may have homesteaded. At least it's NICE to have them. Once you get the records or deeds YOU will find on them the legal descriptin of the property or properties that your ancestors owned and MAY have Homesteaded....... You now call or write the BLM.....or the Bureau of Land Management and the office that would have this information is in Spokane. Here is the address and Phone number for the BLM in Spokane, W: SPOKANE DISTRICT OFFICE-BLM 1103 N. FANCHER SPOKANE, WA 99212-1275 (509) 536-1200 IF the BLM can distinguish which property HAD A LAND PATENT....you then write to the National Archives Trust Fund and request that they give you all information regarding this Homestead. To fully understand this ............go to this web site and it will explain in detail what you have to do. DO be put off by the fact that is a web page from S. Dakoda. THe process is the same for every state. http://members.aol.com/gkrell/homestead/home.html NOW BOOKMARK THIS SITE.....IT'S VERY IMPORTANT. In a another post today.....I will show you what kind of informaton I got from this process. You will be amazed! xxxxxxxo Louise King La Jolla, CA Researching my dad's family SCHURRA, from Rosalia,WA, WHitman County
Hello Washington, Just a few lines to say thank you for all the advice that you have given me. To anyone whom I am in touch with personally, I shall continue to make off-list contact, and would welcome the same from you! Thanks again. This is not goodbye - just see ya later! Happy Hunting! Louise, You offered to help out with Whitman County queries. I have two families that moved to Whitman County some time before 1900. The DAVIS family: Elias and Malinda DAVIS and their son Mark Randolph Davis, and (I'm told) other sons and daughters. They lived in or around St John, and the small community of Sunset for some years. I believe Elias and Malinda died there, but Mark and his wife Elizabeth Ann (HASTING) moved away - probably around 1920. The HASTINGS family (sometimes HASTING) were in Santa Rosa, Cal in 1870 but in Whitman County by 1900. They were: Hartwell Green HASTINGS and his wife Sarah, and at least some of their children: Elizabeth Ann DAVIS (mentioned above), Samuel Perry, Arthur Leroy, and Henry "Pleasant" HASTINGS -- and maybe some others. I have Sarah HASTINGS dying in Pine City in 1916, and her husband Henry somewhere in Whitman County in 1909. I have been told that most of the Davises continued to live in Whitman and Spokane County, or across the border in Idaho, and I suspect most of the Hastings folks did as well. Any help would be much appreciated. Bert Shaw, Portland OR
Hi to everyone, Because there was such an over-whelming response to my query concerning the ' Bay View Cemetery,' I am posting this message to the Wash. rootsweb, rather than try to thank everyone individually. THANK YOU, to all who tried to help me. I think I have plenty of ways, now, to figure out which one is the right one.
