    3. See below RE GAST Search Social Security Death Index lists people who have died, under whose social security number a claim has been paid upon their death, i.e.: Grandpa Joe died in 1960, but had not heirs who could or should file a claim for any social security death (or other) benefits. So, he wouldn't be listed in the SS Death Index. But, Grandpa Jack died in 1962, and he had a widow, and two dependant children at the time of his death, and they all filed claims for SS benefits under his social security number. What you see in the SS Death Index are names of people under whose SS number benefits were made, and you will note that it generally shows the zip code to which the last benefit payment was made. That index had nothing to do with whether or not that person had a SS number, but if benefits were made after their death. Feel free to correct me if I have mis-represented how this index works, but I believe this explanation to be accurate, and hope it is helpful. 3. I hesitate to say this, but I do have reasonable access to the Washington state index and the certificates up to about 1950. I will do look ups if you send name, date, and location (county or city) or as much as you have. If you only have a name it takes a lot longer than a name and date. I go to the location about twice a month and will go again this Monday, Aug 24. So get info to me by Sunday 4:00pm and I will do what I can. After that I will announce any other visit I plan to make. If you send me info inbetween, you MUST be patient as my schedule changes quickly. You may send periodic reminders, just don't hold your breath. I do what I can. Please DO NOT make any major announcements beyond this list. I do have another life and try to do other genealogy also. P.S. The library where I do my research charges $.25 per photocopy, so keep this in mind if you ask for cert. copies. Otherwise, I transcribe the information. P.P.S. The indexes start in 1907 and are filmed more or less by decade. The more recent years are on microfische, I think. I haven't used these, but will if requested. I will not photocopy the index pages because most of the copies are bad to awful. So do not request all listing of a surname except under very dire situations discussed with me. Sorry that Washington state does not have these online yet, but there is work being done in that direction for sometime in the future. Mostly after we get the 1910 Census done. Keep in mind that obits are another story. I have limited access to some of the state newspapers, but no index, so must have place and time and name. Also keep in mind that not everyone has an obit for several reasons. For more recent years, meaning 2-4 years, I have had good luck using the Seattle Times index online. Some day soon, I'll put the links on the WaGenWeb page. I have also done searches on DIALOG that has indexes for 4 major in-state newspapers: Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, I can't remember the 4th, but it may just be the 2 papers in Seattle. I recently searched for a lady, who had not lived in Washington all of her life; could not find her obit in the Seattle Times, but the DIALOG search brought her up in a list of people who had outstanding checks from the State. If you are patient and tolerent, I will do what I can for a pretty please and thank you. Later, Celia Tomlin Washington-L listowner

I have viewed the film myself in the Spokane Public Library. I have seen the deaths listed for my great-grandfather in 1911, and my grandfather in 1957. It lists the name of person, date of death, age at death, place of death (county, I think), and death certificate number. Hope this helps clear up some questions you have on this. It's not a death record, but it is an index, covering the entire state. Susan

    3. The Washington State Death Index goes to at least 1989--I found my husband's biological grandfather on there and he died in 1989. It lists name, social security number (when they had one), gender, death date, age at death and death certificate number. There are two location codes, which I *think* indicate place of residence and place of death. I believe that the place codes are more specific than giving just county, because I notice on the list I copied, I have annotated the place codes with specific cities--and some of the entries were for people I never researched any farther than the death index look-up, so I don't think I got the place names from anywhere else. 1. Re: [WASHINGTON-L] OBITUARIES FROM SEATTLE/ SPOKANE
    2. Both Seattle and Spokane have BIG libraries.......and both are online. Unless someone on this list lives in those areas the best bet would be to contact both libraries and ask if they will look up an OBIT for you. You hopefully have the date of the deaths. I actually phoned the main Library in Oakland, CA and the librarian there.......told me to give her a week or so.......and she would look for an obit for me.......darned if she didnt' find one and she sent it to me. I sent her $5.00 for copying and mailing and her time....although she didn't ask for anything. xxxxxxxxooooo Louise King La Jolla, CA In a message dated 8/21/98 4:24:29 AM, LSLII@aol.com wrote: >Could someone please lead me to the correct location to find out if there is >a way of finding an Obituary for the Seattle and Spokane areas. > Researching Tibbits, and Cornwell in Washington > > Any help will be greatly appreciated. > > Sue Lawson

    2. Aldean...........I believe...but am not sure.....that WA State has a DEATH INDEX and if that is the case maybe someone here has access to it. If they do.......will they please let us all know. We have a death index here in CA and it is extremely helpful for finding someone.....One of the gals on our NORCAL (NO. California) mailing lists goes to the CA State Library in Sacramento every Monday......and looks up things for us. Isn't that NICE? I would assume that one of the big libraries in WA.......would have that list....it's not current here in CA.....but it goes back about 7 years. xxxxxxxxo Louise King La Jolla, CA In a message dated 8/21/98 4:03:53 AM, tendick@efn.org wrote: >Hi, > > I am new to this list. 3. Portions of articles from Spokane Spokesman-Review circa 1925 on the backs of clippings: ....widow of the bandit, William E. WRIGHT, slain in a gun battle at Mobile after he stole $13,000 from a New Orleans bank and killed a policeman while escaping, yesterday made application at the local office of the United States veteran's bureau for the soldier's bonus she said was due her dead husband. Mrs. WRIGHT was released from the parish prison last Friday on $1000 bond on a charge of having part of the stolen money in her possession. The young widow's trial was called early last month, but on motion of District Attorney MARR for a change of venue was continued. ************* FATHERS IN CHARGE OF ENTERTAINMENT The fathers of the Emerson school parent-teacher association will have charge of the program to be given the following meeting.... W.A. KENT will lecture and illustrate the methods of drawing pictures for the children at home as a part of the general program...... ********** ......Bee DOYLE, owner of the farm, six miles from Cave City on which the entrance to Sand Cave is located, today objected to the proposed plan to dynamite the cavern after the body of Floyd COLLINS is recovered. CARMICHAEL had advised dynamiting the hole to avert a similiar tragedy. he contended that the place was so dangerous that it should be destroyed to prevent other adventurers from suffering a similar fate of death through exhaustion, starvation and thirst after being caught underground. DOYLE, who said he had received several good offers for Sand cave, objected to the dynamiting plan. he said that if the officials were going to do anything they should put the dirt back into the hole. The COLLINS shaft and lateral tunnel were dug by volunteer workers who are anxious to return to their homes as soon as COLLINS' body has been brought to the surface or efforts to recover the body are abandoned and he is buried there. There is little likelihood of the shaft and tunnel being filled up. It would takes weeks of labor to do it. ************
