Bev, This is a very interesting question. I'm sure some economics historian has created tables, graphs and lots of data to determine current values of past money and other things of value. As a matter of fact, several years ago I saw a chart in USA Today that showed the values of current commodities in dollars for past years. Anyway, I don't have an answer but I'm sure there is someone on this list who can post the answer to this list. And maybe tell us where we can get data to do this for other years. There must be a formula for this. Thanks for asking such an interesting question. Hope you get a better answer than mine. Regards Richard J. Riley Quincy, MA
When my great grandfather died in 1927, his estate was worth just under $20,000.00. Does anyone have any idea of what that value might be in today's dollars?
I don't have it bookmarked......but there is an Inflation Calulator on the Web.......just go to Alta Vista and type that in...I just was there.......but am rushing to leave...........I did the numbers.....and it turned out toooooooo high.. IT should be MUCH less!! Have fun with it......and be sure not to put in commas or periods... xxxxxxoo Louise King La Jolla, CA In a message dated 12/6/98 16:04:30, rjriley@ix.netcom.com wrote: >Bev, >This is a very interesting question. Hello Reeds (by any spelling) My name is Helen (aka) Nell Logue and I am researching the Reeds. My family line is the Reeds of Mississippi and Texas mainly. A few went to California, and a few somewhere else. What I propose to do is get all of these Reeds into one large database and see if we can make any connections. That is where I will need your help. I need every Reed (by any spelling) to send me a GEDCOM or whatever information you have on the Reeds. I will call them "unattached Reeds" or something of the order. When I do make a connection then that bunch of Reeds will be put in my Reed Database. Until then they will be kept separate. As I add to the database I will make sure you are aware of the change. I hope everyone who reads this will participate. It is going to take a lot of hard work and I will need all the help I can get. What I want is Reeds from Alabama, Arkansas, NY, Michigan, Kentucky, any state in the United States. Any questions? If you are ready, I am. Let's get the Reeds rolling. Start sending your information any way you know how. GEDCOM is really a good way to send lots of information at one time. But if you have a better system, use it. Hope to hear from you Reeds soon. Helen (aka) Nell Logue P.S. Should you get more than one of these letters, please forgive me. It is going to take some doing to find all of you Reeds and even more doing to keep you separated, but I will do my best.
The index goes up into the nineties, but the microfilmed certificates are only available for 1907-1952. Greg: I can check the death index for you next time I go to this particular FHC here in Vancouver. It's one of 3, but it's not the one I usually go to since it's a little more out of the way for me, but I'll try to go in the next week or so. Some of the death certificates are on file also, and a photocopy of them can be had at $.25 a picture. I can't remember how late the actual death certificates are, though, but I think the index goes to about 1965 or so. I can try to get out there later in the week. That's why, when we received information from any outside source, including the net, that we must verify it ourselves. Even good, solid information that comes from other researchers should include citations so that we can go to that cite and confirm the information for our own records. Would hate to think that I was chasing the wrong "Sarah" or "Susan." Come-to-think-of-it, I have chased the wrong person before when I took someone else's information as fact! Oops. Thanks for your help in this area! Susan
Greg, The Washington State Death Index is available on microfilm at many libraries, including the Spokane Public Library, and I'm willing to bet the Seattle and Tacoma libraries as well. I'm sorry that I can't volunteer to go look this up for you, but my time is not my own right now <g>. FYI, the people listed in this index can be confirmed most easily by knowing their approximate age at time of death, and certainly the county in which they died, as well as the approximate year. Marriages and parents' names aren't necessary for this index. Good luck. Hi Everyone At sometime during a family genealogy search we all are going to face the problem of a Fraudulent Lineage. This is a something that is running rampant in this age of mass information. We have opened a new page on our web site that addresses this problem. There are over One Hundred family "genealogies" listed that have been corrupted by one person. We must become aware of what is out there and what to look for. This section of our web site will grow with updates and is open to all. The URL for our website is; http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ On the first page of the site look for the link FRAUDULENT LINEAGES. Happy Hunting Harold Oliver Director

Greg-- I have done some WA research and I do know that in Vancouver at the LDS family history there are some rolls of death certificates on microfilm. This is also true for Idaho. I was able to get three that way. You might check at your local LDS to see if you can get them from Salt Lake City. Hope this helps. Cathy in Portland, OR

I am wondering if there might be someone who goes to the Spokane Courthouse who would be willing to do a quick look up for me. Caroline (Carrie) Diebrel got married sometime between 1905 and 1915 (most likely around 1912 or 13). I would like to know the name of the groom - and any other interesting information on the record. Thanks in advance. Bev
