You go to the web site, enter a search. No Charge. I believe they say they have abits going back to 1960's on some of the names. It takes a long while to get them all in there. Also, these are for the names that had appeared in the Tacoma Newspaper. Michelle
Washington may require you to state what relationship who are you are with in regards to the deceased but I know I have gotten them without stating that. Also, in case some of you didn't know -- Tacoma Public Library has a database of obits online that you can order. They claim you need to be a resident of Washington for it to be free and outside of Washington I believe it is $3. I know one month it was free either way and then when I checked the next month they wanted to charge $3. [The obits I got weren't even for my family as it turned out :-( ] -- I just looked, it is now up to $5 per records.. sheeeeeeesh!!! What I did is put my name on it and sent it to my Aunts address (who lives in Washington) and she forwarded it to me. Considering we are doing this research together it is just the same as if I sent her to order it. [you didn't hear that from me.. lol] Check it out. http://www.tpl.lib.wa.us/nwr/obitscgi.htm Michelle
It would be nice to be able to order the entire database. Do they charge for a search or just if they find it? How far to the records go back? Donna "Michelle A. Doug, Vital Statistics are public records, sort of. These records are held in Olympia, WA, the capitol of the state. I would refer you to a web site that explains how to request these records in any state in the U.S. Go to http://vitalrec.com/ It is my understanding that you will need to state your relationship to the person for whom you are requesting records, so perhaps you may need to be more specific as to if you are really related to these deceased persons or not. If you have not visited the Washington State GenWeb site, perhaps you'd like to try that, too. You may find help there. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/ Hope this helps! Can anyone explain to me how and where vital statistics are kept. I would like to know if there are restrictions on accessibility to these records for privacy. I have four possible relatives who died between 1974 and and 1996. I suspect that these records would be considered private. Also can anyone advise me concerning the major newspapers in Washington. I would like to write them concerning obituaries. Hello, Just wanted to let people know that I have been compiling Clark County, WA and Portland, OR (these cities are right next to each other) contact information for Cemeteries, funeral homes, and genealogical contacts.... If anyone has one that I am missing, I would be so very grateful for any info you wish to contribute... It would benefit many folks attempting to research WA/OR from afar :-) Thank you for your time. I am attempting to track down several relatives who immigrated to Washington State from Alberta, Canada sometime around the end of WW1. Our family seems to have lost track of them. I am writing a family history study on the Frissell family. Since no family member can give me any leads, I decided that I could check cemetery transcriptions. What I need to know is whether or not the cemeteries in Washington State have been transcribed. Also where I could get a listing of all cemeteries in Washington State. Could anyone give me any advice on trying to track down these individuals? I live in Ontario, Canada. You have a point to a point. When a person is asking about the current value of an estate, they are not usually talking about cash only. Most estates are assets that are not cash. If you look at the value of property that is a good example of how much inflation has caused the price of housing to go up. Houses you could by in 1950 for $5000 are now selling for 30,000 to 50,000 dollars. A house that sold for 17,500 in 1969 is now selling for at least three to six times that amount. Land prices have gone the same way. I would like to know where you can live like a king in AZ. I live here and it is not cheap! Our cost of living in Sacramento was much lower than in Mesa. And wages are generally lower here with NO labors to protect employees unless it is a large company. Okay......now that you went to that site.....which I also did.......I think something is wrong!!!!!! Last year I went there....put in a figure of $2,000,000 (two million).....in the year 1895. The site at: http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ is quick and dirty. ie. $20000 in 1920 is equal to about #181664.80 or so in 1997 Celia P.S. There are other calculators.
To Bev and others, There is a book often found in your public library called: The value of a dollar : prices and incomes in the United States... by Derks, Scott. This will give a rough estimate to convert to today's money. But I agree with Susan's husband, it depends. Another book to look for is : Almanacs of American Life: Modern America 1914-1945 by Ross Gregory, which will also help. These both list prices for a variety of items, food, gas, power, etc. Celia Tomlin
I am researching my greatgrandmother Lillian Clemans Merchant. She was born March 09, 1875 in Blanca, Arkansas. She settled in Clarkston, Asotin Co., Washington with her parents William and Isobel Clemans. William and Isobel were founders of Asotin County. They should be easy to research but it is not. Lillian is also hard to track although she had a full and public life. She was the superintendent of schools in Washington State. I don't know exactly where. Her husband Henry Robert Merchant, Sr. was also very famous in the community but records have been hard to come by. I do know that there is a Museum that the Merchants paid for and my ggrandfather started Merchant Funeral homes in Clarkston. If anyone has any way of finding any records on the following let me know: William Clemans Merchant b June 02, 1910 d July 19, 1970 Clarkston, WA Lillian Clemans Merchant b March 09, 1875 Blanca, AR d November 20, 1953 Clarkston, WA Henry Robert Merchant b January 11, 1875 Marinette, WI d May 26, 1954 Clarkston, WA William J. Clemans b possibly in Georgia moved to Clarkston but left for AZ at some point Isobel Clemans b possibly in Arkansas moved to Clarkston but left for AZ at some point Thank you, Jill M. Cordone

I asked my husband's spin on this (no, he's not an economist or banker, but the answer is a good one to keep in mind), and here's his thought: "That depends entirely on how the assets were distributed. Real estate in North Dakota has not increased as fast as downtown Seattle, for example. Funds invested in a bank would have increased with interest that would average about 1.5% over the years, compounded annually. Stocks would be worth whatever they are worth ... if the estate consisted of stock in Ford Motors the estate would be worth a bunch more than if it was based on stocks in a bankrupt bank that didn't survive the depression." Lots of stuff to consider when answering your interesting question!
