Need assistance in locating address and phone number for the Old City Cemetery in Vancouver, Washington. My Great Grandfather, Alexander E. Page was supposedly buried there June 2, 1896. Thanks for your assistance. Cathy Page/Jennings
Lynden is less that 10 miles from the Canadian Border, if your heading due North from Seattle. It is in Whatcom County. Thank You James, I needed that, I grew up also along the Sunnyside Canal. I have many fond memories of the valley growing up. I guess after living on the coast for 12 years, I just never acquired the web feet! Home is in the Valley!. thanks deanna Redmond, WA deanna@compuconn.com
Dear Jim, Thanks for sharing your memories on the irrigation ditch and canals. My husband's grandparents came to Sunnyside from the midwest about 1930, and lived and farmed near the Sunnyside Canal. My husband and his brothers and sister have many memories of that time and that canal. Interesting. Thanks again. I believe there was a fire in the late 1800's. Is this right? If so, did it destroy any vital records? Judi
I am from New Zealand and new to this list. I'm afraid that I don't know this "neck of the woods"(Washington area) at all, so I hope you'll forgive me if I make mistakes. Also, I am not sure whether this request went through to the list as I had noticed the address was wrong (on the 25th.) I have found out that my g-g-grand-parents lived in Seattle and would like to find out any information on them through census or orbits, but you will be best at advising me where to start. My ancestors, John HILLSDON and his wife Ann, children:-Louisa, Ernest Charles, Rosa H, Clara H, Henry P, Annie M & Elizabeth travelled to the United States roughly about 1863. John apparently registered and adopted his surname from HILLSDON to HUTTON in Seattle. Recently though, I came across the probate of Ann which shows her name as:- "HILLSDON Ann, of Seattle Washington America (wife of John Hillsdon) died 30 July 1898 etc, etc. which is now confusing, as I don't know whether to refer to them here as HILLSDON'S or HUTTON'S. I must point out however, that their decendants all had the name Hillsdon- Hutton, whether hyphenated or not. We were told it had something to do with a feud between brothers before John left his homeland of England. Some of the questions I would like to ask is- 1/ would I be able to find out the information of the name-change if it is registered in Seattle? 2/ I have been trying to hunt John down for a long time as he always seemed to avoid being at home on Census day. Could some kind soul please look him up for me? I'm sure Ann would have been at home! Thank you, Judi Guest (NZ)
The first ditch was a ditch that a missionary cut from the Yakima river to his garden. Chief Kamikan took it over and that is what establishes the pre-emtry water rights that the Yakima tribe has. The first real effort that got anywhere as I recall was the Konewak water Co. that sold shares in a water company and put in some ditch and went broke. They were absorbed by the Sunnyside Water Company thatthen went ahead and put in the Sunnyside Canal. My grandma when she lived in Zillah had two shares of Konawak water. And as I recall there wasn't any charge for water delivered on those shares, only the sunnyside shares. I believe that one of the prime movers was a man named Prosser, that the town is named after. Thereis a dam there and at one time a very large Flour mill. that burned about the time of WW2 I think. During the war and after the Roza canal was put in several miles up the slope of the Rattlesnake hills from the Sunnyside canal. But some tim durin the thirties there was a small canal put in above the sunnyside canal called the Highline ditch. My memory isn't all that well and the old folks that I got it from are all gone now. Howdy, My grandfather was a merchant marine... he had a lot! He had a home, a wife and children. As far as I understood the Merchant Marines, they were just another branch of the service that wasn't as widely recognized as an official service until recently. My grandfather was a cook on a huge carrier ship in the Pacific. They were fired upon several times on delivery missions. Doesn't hurt to check it out and see if the service had any records and if the state does also. Just a thought... Cheryl
Patty, I would check out the Puget Sound Maritime Museum and the Washington State Historical Society/Museum. There are links on the WAGenWeb Project page. The Maritime Museum has a new link that does not have as much information as before. I will call them today to see if their old page will be going up. Does anyone have any Ideas as to where to go about getting any info on 3 of the Irrigation ditches, the Moxee Company, the Hubbard and the Fowler ditch. My third great grandfather, Charles V. Fowler and his two sons, Frank and Zachariah T. Fowler took out these ditches. These were the 3 first ditches in the Yakama Valley.
Looking for ANY info on the TUG - "THE INTENT" out of Tacoma, Wa. in 1942/43/44. My father went to Masawa aboard her as a hard hat diver. Cdm. Elsberg USN, and a crew of about 15 went there to clear the sunken ships, so supplys could get through. Great book about it called "Under the Red Sea Sun" by Cdm Elsburg. I have this but no info before. Any ideas or suggest. on where I could look. Patty
