Hello all, We all know how important our old cemeteries are. They often bring us closer to our ancestors and give us vital information which is usually considered "primary" evidence in support of a genealogy. All around the country, these old cemeteries, their headstones, and their records are disappearing at an alarming rate. I received word today from Representative Patricia Lantz that our legislation to protect abandoned cemeteries has been introduced and sent to the chairs of the House Judiciary Committee and assigned the number HB 1951. I have been asked by Representative Lantz lantz_pa@leg.wa.gov to be prepared to appear on short notice for a hearing and to have as many concerned citizens as possible attend the hearing (and possibly testify while there). Only two small sentences have been added to current laws in this bill -- this is only the beginning (wait til next year!). I have typed below my signature block the legislation as it would read should it be passed by the House and Senate and signed by the Governor; the additions are in all caps. The reason I chose to only put forward these two small sentences is that time was short and in order to do a "thorough" job, I feel we should introduce a whole new chapter just on abandoned cemeteries and how they are to be protected and preserved. The two sentences added this year are small but should give pause to any judge ruling on disinterrment and removing dedications on older cemeteries. It is my hope that by seeing the word abandoned, it might bring to a judge's mind that a cemetery he may be ruling on might just be an abandoned cemetery and he might want to see ownership proven. Towards that effort, I plan to begin writing articles on the problems of abandoned cemeteries in Washington and around the U.S. We need to broaden lawyers', judges', and the public's knowledge in this area. Other Representatives who have joined Representative Lantz in sponsoring our bill are Representative DeBolt debolt_ri@leg.wa.gov Representative Miloscia miloscia_ma@leg.wa.gov Representative McDonald mcdonald_jo@leg.wa.gov Representative Stensen stensen_mi@leg.wa.gov The Chair of the House Judiciary Committee overseeing the hearing is Representative Mike Carrell carrell_mi@leg.wa.gov The other Chair of the House Judiciary Committee overseeing the hearing is Representative Dow Constantine constant_do@leg.wa.gov I have placed their email addresses here so that you might immediately send them a note telling them your name, address, and that you support the legislation. The more email we can generate, the better. Send one to each and then locate your Representative and Senator at http://dfind.leg.wa.gov/ and send them an email also. Tomorrow there will appear a page at our web site which can be printed, duplicated and handed out to any concerned citizen who does not have email. They should sign the paper and mail it to their State Rep or Senator. If they cannot figure out who that is, be a friend and collect their papers and mail them all in together, or send them to P. O. Box 103, Port Orchard, WA 98366 and we will see to it that they are turned over to one of the sponsors of the bill. As I learn more about the hearing, I will keep you all posted. As usual, please notify anyone you feel might support this issue, and feel free to forward this email to any list which might be interested in preserving our old or abandoned cemeteries in Washington state. If you have questions, please contact me directly. ------------- Andrea D. Hi! Harry McLean MYERS was my grandfather's brother and I have him on the 1920 WA census as living with his father Octavus C. and mother Elizabeth H. MYERS (maiden name WATSON). Harry was born in 1885 in Brooklyn NY. The story goes that there are still lots of MYERS descendants in the Seattle area. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Octavus was born in 1837 in Savannah GA, was a Confederate general, died in Seattle in 1928. Elizabeth was born in NY around 1857. Nancy Myers Wang kmhnwang@tkd.att.ne.jp

Eligibility: Any female eighteen years of age or older who is a lineal descendant of pioneers who established residence in Washington during the year 1870 and or prior thereto; or in the state of Oregon during the year 1853 and or prior thereto; or in Montana west of the crest of the Rocky Mountains during the year 1863 and or prior thereto. As to what the organization does, I have no clue. I had only received one newsletter from them -- Lewis County Branch. Lewis County is behind, I know that. They promised us information when we joined and so far we never received it and that was 2 years ago. You need to check the branch you will be associated with and they will be able to explain what their organization is about and can do for you. Michelle
My Grandma was a member of the Daughters of the Pioneers Seattle chapter for many years. She gave my sister and I jr. memberships when we were little, and I still get the yearly membership guide and annual report. Grandma always went to the meetings, and is well remembered there. As far as I could ever tell, they do research and the meetings were social occasions for Grandma. They have a scholarship for those majoring in history, and they have an annual meeting each year. Edith Johnson is the contact for the Seattle Chapter, and it is down in Madison Park. I don't have the number here with me, but I will see if I can find it and post it later. The applications for membership can be useful, you must prove your ancestors were pioneers, so the documentation is also with the application. I got my Grandmothers application for membership, which included the obituary for my great great grandfather and his father, so they can be a source of information. Best Regards, Patrice Shinabarger Seattle, WA

We would need to know in what city Ann died to find the obit in the local paper. To look up her husband's death date it would be helpful to have a range. Did he die before or after Ann? I was wondering if I could possibly have a Obit for a Ann HUTTON who died 30 July 1898 or led me in the direction of where I would get one please. Do you (In USA) have availability to probates also? I don't have a death date for Ann's husband John HUTTON. Would it be possible for someone to look that up for me please. I'd be really grateful. Hi, I would like to know if anyone does Seattle newspaper lookups or if anyone can tell me who to contact for such info.? My great-granduncle, James Nathaniel Brooks (or Nat Brooks), died December 10, 1929 in Port Townsend, Jefferson County, Washington and was buried there. He was a Merchant Marine Ship's Cook and a former goldminer. He was born in 1863. He place of residence was listed as Seattle on his death certificate. He was married to Georgia Phifer in Colorado or Nebraska around 1910 or so. He had a daughter from a previous marriage and Georgia had a son from a previous marriage. They all moved to Seattle, Washington by 1920. Georgia and James were later divorced sometimes during the 1920's. I am trying to locate information and the whereabouts of his daughter at the time. His death certificate didn't offer any information. I'm hoping that maybe an obituary was written for him in the Seattle newspaper that might say. There was no obituary in the Port Townsend newspaper. It may have taken awhile for the news of his death to reach Seattle, but sometimes after December 10, 1929, he could be listed. At least, I hope so. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks. Duston Brooks
A friend of mine, who was adopted in the 1950s, is dying and would like to get access to his adoption file. Time is very limited. He was born in probably Thurston County. If anyone can provide steps and procedures for us, it will be deeply appreciated.
