If you suspect a relative in your family tree may have died in a train accident, check the dates and see if any of them match. Later information given to me was that my grandfather didn't die in the derailment, but from complications of pneumonia as a result of the accident. So check for dates closely preceeding your ancestors deaths, too. Good luck! I hope all this hard work and hours and hours of compliling might help someone out there...

One said at one time it did exsist and he "took care" of it as a child as it was behind family home. There were only 5 stones. Names unread-able and 10 wooden crosses, names not on them. It was vandalized many years ago including digging and everything destroyed. Nothing left. As far as he remembers the stones were broken and unuseable. The land was sold for building site, and investigation proved nothing was there. If there were any records they were not found. They may have been destroyed in Wilkeson fire Sorry. Gail

    3. We went by it around Christmas time and we were told that it is now just an old folks home. Don't know if they still have old soldiers there now or not. It's in McKenna, WA. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 12, 2003 7:19 PM Subject: [WASHINGTON-L] Re: Civil War veterans' homes > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CCC.2ACE/2273.2 > > Message Board Post: > > There was, and maybe still is, a "State Soldiers Home" in Orting, Washington. It was, or is, in Pierce County about 20 miles SSE of Puyallup. I know it was still in existance in 1926 when my great grandfather died there. I have also talked to people who indicated it was still operating as late as 1990.

My gr-gr-grandfather served in the Spanish/American War and he and his wife (my gr-gr-grandmother) lived their last days there and are buried in their cemetery. Until the State took it over (I don't know when) it was also called the Old Soldiers Home. This one or the one in Orting (Pierce County) may be what you're looking for.
